Psychological Testing

Quick summary

A psychological test is a standardised and objective measure of a sample of behaviour. Tests are used to measure intelligence, aptitude, personality, interests, attitudes and achievement. A good test must have reliability, validity, norms, objectivity and standardised administration. Tests are used in schools, clinics, counselling, industry and research, and must be used ethically.

Key points

  • Anne Anastasi defined a psychological test as essentially an objective and standardised measure of a sample of behaviour.
  • Francis Galton is called the father of mental testing; James McKeen Cattell coined the term "mental test" (1890); Binet and Simon made the first practical intelligence test (1905).
  • Psychological tests (मानसशास्त्रीय चाचण्या) measure individual differences.
  • Characteristics of a good test: reliability, validity, norms, standardisation, objectivity and practicability (usability).
  • Types of tests by content: intelligence, aptitude, achievement, personality, interest, attitude tests.
  • By administration: individual vs group tests.
  • By form: verbal, non-verbal and performance tests.
  • By time limit: speed tests (easy items, short time) and power tests (items of rising difficulty, enough time).
  • Steps in test construction: planning, writing items, preliminary try-out, item analysis (difficulty and discrimination), final selection, establishing reliability, validity and norms, preparing the manual.
  • Ethical issues: informed consent, confidentiality, competence of the tester, fair use without cultural bias, proper explanation of results.

Important terms

  • Standardisation – uniform procedure of administering and scoring, and establishing norms on a representative sample.
  • Norms – average performance of a standard group, used to interpret an individual's score (age norms, grade norms, percentile norms, standard score norms).
  • Reliability – consistency of test scores.
  • Validity – the extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure.
  • Objectivity – scoring is not affected by the scorer's personal judgment.
  • Aptitude – potential ability to learn a skill (e.g. DAT – Differential Aptitude Tests).
  • Achievement test – measures what a person has already learned.

Important thinkers and theories

Type of reliabilityMethod
Test–retestSame test given twice to the same group after a time gap
Parallel (alternate) formsTwo equivalent forms of the test given
Split-halfTest divided into two halves (e.g. odd and even items) and correlated; corrected by Spearman–Brown formula
Inter-rater (scorer)Agreement between two or more scorers
Type of validityMeaning
Face validityTest appears to measure what it should
Content validityItems cover the whole area to be measured
Criterion validityScores correlate with an outside criterion — concurrent (now) or predictive (future)
Construct validityTest measures the theoretical trait (e.g. intelligence)
  • Reliability and validity are usually expressed as correlation coefficients (from 0 to 1 for good tests).
  • A test can be reliable without being valid, but a valid test must be reasonably reliable.

5 important questions

Reliability, Validity and Norms

Quick summary

Reliability, validity and norms decide whether a psychological test can be trusted. Reliability is the consistency of scores, validity is whether the test measures what it claims to measure, and norms let us interpret a person's score by comparing it with a standard group. Each has several types and is expressed with correlation coefficients or standard scores.

Key points

  • Reliability (विश्वसनीयता) – consistency or stability of test scores. Expressed as a reliability coefficient (r) from 0 to 1; above about 0.80 is usually considered good.
  • Test–retest – same test given twice to the same group after a gap; correlate the two sets of scores.
  • Parallel (alternate) forms – two equivalent forms given to the same group.
  • Split-half – one test divided into two halves (odd–even items); correct with the Spearman–Brown formula.
  • Internal consistency – Kuder–Richardson (KR-20) for right/wrong items, Cronbach's alpha (1951) for rating items.
  • Inter-rater (scorer) reliability – agreement between two scorers.
  • Types of reliability:
  • Factors affecting reliability: test length (longer is more reliable), heterogeneity of group, time gap, guessing, testing conditions, clarity of instructions.
  • Validity (सप्रमाणता) – the degree to which a test measures what it is supposed to measure. A test can be reliable but not valid, but it cannot be valid without being reliable.
  • Face validity – appears to measure the trait (not true technical validity).
  • Content validity – items fairly cover the whole area (e.g. a maths test covers all chapters).
  • Criterion-related validity – correlation with an outside criterion: concurrent (criterion now) and predictive (future criterion, e.g. entrance test vs later college marks).
  • Construct validity – test measures a theoretical concept; includes convergent (correlates with similar tests) and discriminant (does not correlate with unrelated traits) evidence; factor analysis is used.
  • Types of validity:
  • Norms (मानके) – performance of a representative standardisation sample. Types: age norms, grade norms, percentile norms (percentage of people scoring below a score) and standard score norms (z-score, T-score, stanine, deviation IQ).

Important terms

  • Correlation coefficient – a number from −1 to +1 showing how two sets of scores are related.
  • Standard error of measurement – the expected spread of a person's scores due to unreliability.
  • Percentile rank – percentage of the norm group scoring below a given score.
  • Stanine – "standard nine" scale from 1 to 9, mean 5, SD 2.
  • Standardisation sample – the large representative group used to build norms.

Formulas

  • Example: correlation between halves = 0.60 → r = 1.20 ÷ 1.60 = 0.75.
  • Spearman–Brown (split-half): r(full test) = 2 × r(half) ÷ (1 + r(half)).
  • Example: X = 65, M = 50, SD = 10 → z = 15 ÷ 10 = 1.5.
  • z-score: z = (X − M) ÷ SD.
  • T-score: T = 50 + 10z → 50 + 10 × 1.5 = 65.
  • Deviation IQ (Wechsler): IQ = 100 + 15z → for z = 1.5, IQ = 122.5 (about 122).

5 important questions

Q1. Define reliability.

Reliability is the consistency of test scores — a reliable test gives nearly the same results when the same person is tested again under similar conditions.

Q2. What is predictive validity?

It is the extent to which test scores correctly predict a future criterion, for example how well an entrance-exam score predicts later academic performance.

Q3. Explain the methods of estimating reliability.

  • Test–retest, parallel forms, split-half with Spearman–Brown, KR-20/Cronbach's alpha, inter-rater.
  • Merits and limitations of each (memory and practice effects, cost of second form).
  • Worked Spearman–Brown example.

Q4. Describe the types of validity.

  • Face, content, criterion (concurrent and predictive), construct.
  • One example for each.
  • Relation between reliability and validity.

Q5. What are norms? Explain their types.

  • Meaning and need for norms.
  • Age, grade, percentile and standard score norms.
  • Worked z and T score example; stanine.
  • Need for local (Indian) norms.

Exam tip

Show one small calculation (Spearman–Brown or z-score) in your answer; numbers convince examiners that you understand the concept, not just the definitions.

Quick summary

Cognitive assessment measures abilities such as intelligence and aptitude, while non-cognitive assessment measures interests, attitudes and personality. Intelligence tests like the Stanford–Binet and Wechsler scales give an IQ; aptitude tests like the DAT predict success in particular fields; interest inventories like Strong's and Holland's help in career choice. In India, many tests have been adapted for local use.

Key points

  • Intelligence test – measures general mental ability. Ratio IQ (Stern, Terman): IQ = (Mental Age ÷ Chronological Age) × 100. Modern tests use deviation IQ (mean 100, SD 15).
  • Stanford–Binet (Terman, 1916; now 5th edition) – individual test for ages 2 to adult.
  • Wechsler scales (David Wechsler): WAIS (adults), WISC (children 6–16), WPPSI (preschool). Give index scores (verbal comprehension, perceptual/fluid reasoning, working memory, processing speed) and a full-scale IQ.
  • Non-verbal and culture-fair tests: Raven's Progressive Matrices (1938), Cattell's Culture Fair Intelligence Test, Bhatia's Battery of Performance Tests (India, 1955; includes Koh's block design, pass-along, pattern drawing, picture construction, immediate memory).
  • Classification of IQ (approximate): 130+ very superior/gifted, 110–119 high average, 90–109 average, 70–79 borderline, below 70 suggests intellectual disability (along with adaptive functioning).
  • Aptitude (अभियोग्यता) – potential to acquire a skill with training. Tests: Differential Aptitude Tests (DAT) – verbal reasoning, numerical ability, abstract reasoning, mechanical reasoning, space relations, clerical speed and accuracy, spelling, language usage; GATB (General Aptitude Test Battery); special aptitude tests for music, art, mechanical and clerical work.
  • Achievement test – measures what has already been learned (school exams).
  • Interest inventories: Strong Interest Inventory (E. K. Strong, 1927), Kuder Preference Record, Holland's RIASEC model – Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, Conventional.
  • Attitude scales: Thurstone (1928), Likert (1932, 5-point agree–disagree), Bogardus social distance scale.
  • Uses: educational and career guidance, selection, diagnosis of giftedness and intellectual disability, research.
  • Cautions: cultural and language bias, test anxiety, coaching effects; scores should be used with other information and explained carefully.

Important terms

  • Mental age – the age level at which a child performs on a test.
  • Deviation IQ – IQ based on how far a person's score is from the mean of his age group.
  • Culture-fair test – test designed to reduce cultural and language advantages.
  • Aptitude – capacity to learn; achievement – learning already done; interest – liking for activities.
  • RIASEC – Holland's six personality–occupation types.

Quick summary

Guidance is a process of helping individuals understand themselves and their opportunities so that they can make wise choices in education, career and personal life. Counselling is a more intensive, face-to-face professional relationship to help a person solve problems and grow. The main types of guidance are educational, vocational and personal. Approaches to counselling include directive, non-directive and eclectic counselling.

Key points

  • Guidance (मार्गदर्शन) is a continuous process of helping an individual to develop his or her potential and make adjustments and decisions.
  • The guidance movement began in the USA in the early 1900s. Frank Parsons is called the father of vocational guidance; he opened the Vocations Bureau in Boston (1908). His book Choosing a Vocation was published in 1909.
  • Principles of guidance: respect for the individual, continuous process, for all (not only problem cases), based on individual differences, cooperative effort, self-guidance as the final aim.
  • Types of guidance: educational (choice of subjects, study habits), vocational (career choice and preparation), personal–social (emotional, family and social adjustment), and also health and leisure guidance.
  • Counselling (समुपदेशन) is a professional relationship in which a trained counsellor helps a client understand and solve problems.
  • Directive counselling (E.G. Williamson): counsellor-centred; counsellor diagnoses and advises.
  • Non-directive counselling (Carl Rogers): client-centred; counsellor listens with empathy and the client finds solutions.
  • Eclectic counselling (F.C. Thorne): combines both approaches according to the client's needs.
  • Qualities of a good counsellor: empathy, warmth, patience, good listening, genuineness, respect, maintaining confidentiality, emotional stability, professional training.

Important terms

  • Counsellor – a trained professional who provides counselling.
  • Counsellee / client – the person who receives counselling.
  • Rapport – a relationship of trust and comfort between counsellor and client.
  • Active listening – listening with full attention and reflecting back the client's feelings.
  • Confidentiality – keeping the client's information private.
  • Cumulative record – a record of a student's progress kept over years, useful in school guidance.
  • Career counselling – helping a person choose and plan a career.

Quick summary

Educational psychology applies the principles of psychology to teaching and learning. It studies how students learn and develop, how individual differences, motivation and classroom climate affect learning, and how teachers can teach and assess effectively. It also covers children with special needs and inclusive education.

Key points

  • Educational psychology (शैक्षणिक मानसशास्त्र) – the scientific study of human behaviour in educational settings. E. L. Thorndike is called its father; his Educational Psychology appeared in 1903.
  • Scope: the learner (growth, abilities, individual differences), the learning process, the learning situation (classroom, climate), the teacher (personality, methods), assessment, guidance and mental health.
  • Learning theories in the classroom: behaviourist (reinforcement, practice, programmed learning – Skinner), cognitive (insight, meaningful learning – Ausubel's advance organisers, Bruner's discovery learning and spiral curriculum), constructivist (Piaget, Vygotsky – active learning, scaffolding), social learning (Bandura – teacher as model).
  • Bloom's taxonomy (1956; revised 2001) of cognitive objectives – revised order: remember, understand, apply, analyse, evaluate, create.
  • Motivation in learning: intrinsic vs extrinsic; Maslow's needs; achievement motivation (McClelland); praise and feedback; self-fulfilling prophecy / Pygmalion effect (Rosenthal and Jacobson, 1968) – teachers' expectations affect students' performance.
  • Individual differences: intelligence, aptitude, learning styles, socio-economic background; Gardner's multiple intelligences suggest varied teaching methods.
  • Classroom management: clear rules, positive discipline, group work, democratic leadership; corporal punishment is banned under the RTE Act, 2009.
  • Children with special needs: gifted, slow learners, learning disabilities (dyslexia – reading, dysgraphia – writing, dyscalculia – maths), ADHD, autism, sensory and physical disabilities.
  • Inclusive education – all children learn together in regular schools with support; supported by the RPwD Act 2016 and NEP 2020.
  • Evaluation: formative (during learning) and summative (end of term); continuous and comprehensive evaluation.

Important terms

  • Discovery learning – students find principles themselves through exploration (Bruner).
  • Advance organiser – introductory material that links new learning to what students already know (Ausubel).
  • Transfer of learning – effect of earlier learning on new learning (positive, negative, zero).
  • Pygmalion effect – high expectations lead to better performance.
  • Remedial teaching – special teaching to remove learning difficulties.

Industrial and Organizational Psychology

(Expectancy × Instrumentality × Valence).

Quick summary

Industrial and organisational (I/O) psychology applies psychological principles to the workplace. It deals with employee selection, training, motivation, job satisfaction, leadership, working conditions and organisational behaviour. Classic contributions include Taylor's scientific management, the Hawthorne studies, and theories of work motivation by Maslow, Herzberg and Vroom.

Key points

  • I/O psychology (औद्योगिक मानसशास्त्र) studies human behaviour at work to improve both productivity and employee well-being.
  • Hugo Münsterberg is called the father of industrial psychology; his book Psychology and Industrial Efficiency appeared in 1913.
  • F.W. Taylor's scientific management (1911): time-and-motion studies, standard methods, incentive pay.
  • Hawthorne studies (Western Electric Company's Hawthorne Works at Cicero, near Chicago, 1924–1932; Elton Mayo and colleagues): productivity rose because workers felt noticed and because of social relations, not only lighting or pay. This is called the Hawthorne effect and started the human relations movement.
  • Personnel selection steps: job analysis → advertisement → application screening → tests (aptitude, personality, skill) → interview → reference checks → medical → placement.
  • Job analysis gives the job description (duties) and job specification (qualities needed).
  • Training methods: on-the-job (apprenticeship, job rotation, coaching) and off-the-job (lectures, simulations, role-play, e-learning).
  • Herzberg's two-factor theory: hygiene factors (salary, working conditions, job security, policies) prevent dissatisfaction; motivators (achievement, recognition, responsibility, growth, the work itself) create satisfaction.
  • McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y: X assumes workers dislike work and need control; Y assumes workers are self-motivated and seek responsibility.
  • Vroom's expectancy theory: Motivation = Expectancy × Instrumentality × Valence.

Important terms

  • Job satisfaction – positive feelings about one's job.
  • Morale – the general spirit and confidence of a work group.
  • Absenteeism – frequent absence from work; turnover – employees leaving the organisation.
  • Fatigue – reduced capacity to work after long effort; reduced by rest pauses.
  • Ergonomics (human engineering) – designing equipment and workplaces to fit human abilities.
  • Organisational culture – shared values and norms in an organisation.
  • Performance appraisal – systematic evaluation of employee performance.

  • Satisfaction and dissatisfaction are separate dimensions.
  • Use: job enrichment.

Q5. Describe the factors affecting job satisfaction.

  • Pay and benefits.
  • Nature of work and challenge.
  • Supervision and leadership style.
  • Co-workers and social relations.
  • Promotion and growth opportunities.
  • Working conditions and job security; personal factors like age and expectations.

Exam tip

Memorise the contributor–contribution table. Herzberg and the Hawthorne studies are favourite long questions; list hygiene factors and motivators in two columns.

Quick summary

Consumer psychology studies how people choose, buy, use and dispose of products and services, and what influences these decisions. It uses ideas of motivation, perception, learning, attitudes and social influence to explain buying behaviour, and it guides advertising and marketing. It also helps consumers understand persuasion and protect their rights.

Key points

  • Consumer behaviour (ग्राहक वर्तन) – the mental and physical activities of people in searching, evaluating, buying, using and disposing of goods and services.
  • Consumer decision-making process: (1) problem or need recognition → (2) information search → (3) evaluation of alternatives → (4) purchase decision → (5) post-purchase behaviour (satisfaction or dissatisfaction).
  • Post-purchase dissonance – doubt after an expensive purchase (Festinger's cognitive dissonance); reduced by reassurance, warranties and good service.
  • Factors influencing buying (Philip Kotler): cultural (culture, sub-culture, social class), social (family, reference groups, opinion leaders, roles), personal (age, occupation, income, lifestyle, personality) and psychological (motivation, perception, learning, beliefs and attitudes).
  • Motivation: Maslow's hierarchy (from basic food to luxury status goods); rational vs emotional motives; impulse buying.
  • Perception: selective attention, exposure and retention; packaging, colour, price–quality inference; subliminal advertising claims are mostly unsupported.
  • Learning: classical conditioning (pairing a product with pleasant music or celebrities), operant conditioning (rewards, loyalty points), brand loyalty as learned habit.
  • Attitudes: consumers' attitudes toward brands can be changed by persuasion (Elaboration Likelihood Model – central vs peripheral routes).
  • Advertising: AIDA model (E. St. Elmo Lewis) – Attention, Interest, Desire, Action; appeals – rational, emotional, fear, humour, celebrity endorsement, social proof, scarcity.
  • Digital consumer: online reviews, influencers, targeted ads, social media, e-commerce and UPI payments.
  • Consumer rights in India – Consumer Protection Act, 2019: right to safety, to be informed, to choose, to be heard, to seek redressal, and to consumer awareness; set up the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) and covers misleading advertisements and e-commerce.

Important terms

  • Reference group – a group a person compares himself with when forming attitudes and buying choices.
  • Opinion leader – a person whose advice influences others' buying decisions.
  • Brand image – the set of beliefs consumers hold about a brand.
  • Impulse buying – unplanned purchase made on the spot.
  • Market segmentation – dividing consumers into groups with similar needs.

5 important questions

Q1. What is consumer behaviour?

Consumer behaviour is the study of how individuals select, buy, use and dispose of goods and services to satisfy their needs, and the factors that influence these choices.

Q2. Explain the AIDA model.

It is a model of advertising effect: an ad must first catch Attention, then create Interest, build Desire for the product and finally lead to Action (buying).

Q3. Describe the stages of the consumer decision-making process.

  • Need recognition, information search, evaluation, purchase, post-purchase.
  • Example of buying a mobile phone.
  • Post-purchase dissonance and its reduction.

Q4. Discuss the psychological factors influencing consumer behaviour.

  • Motivation (Maslow), perception, learning (conditioning, brand loyalty), attitudes.
  • Personality and self-concept.
  • Examples from Indian advertisements.

Q5. Write a note on consumer rights and the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

  • Six consumer rights.
  • CCPA, consumer commissions at district, state and national levels.
  • Protection against misleading advertisements, product liability, e-commerce rules.
  • Role of consumer awareness.

Exam tip

Use the purchase of one product (like a mobile phone) as a running example through every stage of decision-making; it makes your answer clear and memorable.

Stress and Health

(Biofeedback).

Quick summary

Stress is the pattern of physical and psychological responses to events that threaten or challenge a person. Sources of stress include frustration, conflict, pressure and life changes. Hans Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome explains the body's response to long-term stress, and Lazarus's appraisal model explains the role of thinking. Long-term stress harms health, so effective coping and stress management are important.

Key points

  • Stress (ताण) is the body's and mind's response to demands that tax or exceed a person's resources.
  • Stressor: the event or situation that causes stress.
  • Eustress is positive, motivating stress (e.g. preparing for a competition); distress is harmful stress.
  • Sources of stress: frustration, conflict (approach–approach, avoidance–avoidance, approach–avoidance), pressure, life events (death of a loved one, marriage, job loss), daily hassles (traffic, deadlines) and environmental stressors (noise, crowding, pollution).
  • Holmes and Rahe (1967) made the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS), which gives points to life events; death of a spouse has the highest value (100).
  • Hans Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS): (1) alarm reaction, (2) resistance, (3) exhaustion.
  • Richard Lazarus's transactional (cognitive appraisal) model: primary appraisal (is this a threat?) and secondary appraisal (can I cope with it?).
  • Effects of stress: physical (headache, high blood pressure, ulcers, weak immunity, heart disease), emotional (anxiety, irritability, depression), cognitive (poor concentration, memory problems) and behavioural (sleep problems, smoking, alcohol use).
  • Type A personality (Friedman and Rosenman): competitive, hurried, impatient, hostile; linked with higher risk of heart disease. Type B is relaxed and easy-going.
  • Hardiness (Suzanne Kobasa): commitment, control and challenge help people resist stress.

Important terms

  • Psychoneuroimmunology – study of links between mind, nervous system and immune system.
  • Psychosomatic (psychophysiological) disorders – physical illnesses influenced by psychological stress, e.g. hypertension, ulcers, asthma.
  • Coping – efforts to manage stressful demands.
  • Problem-focused coping – dealing directly with the problem (planning, seeking information).
  • Emotion-focused coping – managing emotional reaction (relaxation, seeking comfort, reappraisal).
  • Burnout – physical and emotional exhaustion from long-term work stress.
  • Social support – help and care from family, friends and community; protects against stress.

Important thinkers and theories

Stage of GAS (Selye)What happens
Alarm reactionBody detects stressor; sympathetic system and adrenaline activate ("fight or flight"); resistance briefly drops
ResistanceBody adapts and resists; high arousal continues; resources are used up
ExhaustionResources run out; illness, fatigue and even death in extreme cases

Stress management techniques:

  • Relaxation training (progressive muscle relaxation – Edmund Jacobson), deep breathing.
  • Yoga and meditation, mindfulness.
  • Regular exercise, healthy diet and sleep.
  • Time management and realistic goals.
  • Cognitive restructuring (changing negative thoughts).
  • Biofeedback.
  • Social support and talking to a counsellor.

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between eustress and distress.

Eustress is positive stress that motivates and improves performance. Distress is negative stress that causes discomfort and harms health and performance.

Q2. What is primary appraisal?

In Lazarus's model, primary appraisal is the person's judgment of whether an event is irrelevant, harmless (positive) or stressful (harm, threat or challenge).

Q3. Explain Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome.

  • Alarm: fight or flight, adrenaline.
  • Resistance: adaptation, continued arousal.
  • Exhaustion: breakdown, illness.
  • Same pattern for many stressors (non-specific response).
  • Diagram: resistance level across three stages.

Q4. Explain the sources of stress.

  • Frustration.
  • Conflicts (Lewin's types).
  • Pressure: internal and external.
  • Major life events (Holmes and Rahe).
  • Daily hassles.
  • Environmental and occupational stressors.

Q5. Describe methods of coping with and managing stress.

  • Problem-focused and emotion-focused coping.
  • Relaxation, yoga, meditation, breathing.
  • Exercise, sleep and diet.
  • Time management.
  • Cognitive restructuring and positive thinking.
  • Social support and professional help.

Exam tip

Draw Selye's GAS curve and write the three stages clearly. For stress management, include Indian methods like yoga and meditation along with scientific techniques.

Positive Psychology

Quick summary

Positive psychology is the scientific study of what makes life worth living — happiness, strengths, virtues, meaning and flourishing. It was launched by Martin Seligman in 1998 to balance psychology's long focus on illness. Key ideas include subjective well-being, the PERMA model, flow, character strengths, optimism, resilience and gratitude, which can be developed through simple practices.

Key points

  • Positive psychology (सकारात्मक मानसशास्त्र) – study of positive experiences, positive traits and positive institutions (Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi, 2000).
  • Three pillars: positive subjective experiences (joy, contentment, hope), positive individual traits (strengths, virtues, talents) and positive institutions (families, schools, workplaces that help people flourish).
  • Subjective well-being (Ed Diener) – life satisfaction + frequent positive emotions + few negative emotions; often called happiness.
  • Hedonic well-being (pleasure and happiness) vs eudaimonic well-being (meaning, growth, living by one's values – Carol Ryff's six dimensions of psychological well-being).
  • PERMA model (Seligman, 2011): Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment.
  • Flow (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi) – complete absorption in a challenging activity that matches one's skills; time seems to fly.
  • Character strengths (VIA classification, Peterson and Seligman, 2004) – 24 strengths grouped under 6 virtues: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance and transcendence.
  • Broaden-and-build theory (Barbara Fredrickson) – positive emotions broaden thinking and build lasting personal resources.
  • Optimism – learned optimism (Seligman): explaining bad events as temporary, specific and external; hope theory (C. R. Snyder) – goals, pathways and agency.
  • Resilience – ability to bounce back from adversity; supported by social support, self-efficacy, problem-solving and meaning.
  • Positive interventions: gratitude journal ("three good things"), gratitude letter, acts of kindness, using signature strengths in new ways, mindfulness meditation, savouring.
  • Applications: positive education, workplace well-being, positive health, positive clinical psychology; Indian ideas such as santosh (contentment), yoga and the Gita's nishkama karma connect with these themes.
  • Criticisms: may ignore negative emotions ("toxic positivity"), cultural bias towards Western individualism, some findings oversimplified.

Important terms

  • Flourishing – high well-being with positive functioning in life.
  • Signature strengths – a person's top, most characteristic strengths.
  • Savouring – consciously enjoying positive experiences.
  • Gratitude – thankful appreciation for what one receives.
  • Post-traumatic growth – positive change after struggling with trauma.

Rehabilitation Psychology

Quick summary

Rehabilitation psychology applies psychological knowledge to help people with disabilities and chronic health conditions achieve the best possible health, independence, participation and quality of life. It deals with adjustment to disability, assessment, counselling, family support, vocational training and removing social barriers. In India it is guided by the Rehabilitation Council of India and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Key points

  • Rehabilitation (पुनर्वसन) – a process that helps a person with disability reach and maintain optimal physical, sensory, mental, psychological and social functioning.
  • Rehabilitation psychology works with people with physical disabilities, spinal cord or brain injury, sensory impairments, intellectual disability, chronic illness, mental illness and addiction.
  • Impairment, disability and handicap: impairment = loss of body structure or function; disability = limitation in activity; handicap (older term) = social disadvantage. The WHO's ICF (2001) now speaks of body functions, activity limitations and participation restrictions, along with environmental factors.
  • Models of disability: medical model (problem lies in the individual, to be cured), social model (society's barriers disable people), biopsychosocial model (interaction of health condition, person and environment), and the rights-based model.
  • Psychosocial reactions to disability: shock, denial, anger, depression, and gradual adjustment or acceptance — not a fixed sequence. Beatrice Wright stressed "acceptance of loss" and value change; Kurt Lewin and Tamara Dembo were early pioneers.
  • Stigma and attitudes – prejudice, pity and discrimination are major barriers; awareness, contact and inclusive laws reduce them.
  • Areas of work: psychological assessment (cognitive, emotional, vocational), counselling of the person and family, behaviour therapy, cognitive rehabilitation after brain injury, social skills training, vocational rehabilitation (training and job placement), community-based rehabilitation (CBR), assistive technology.
  • Indian framework: Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) Act, 1992 – regulates training and registration of rehabilitation professionals; RPwD Act, 2016 – recognises 21 types of disability, gives 4% reservation in government jobs and 5% in higher education for persons with benchmark disabilities, and promotes inclusive education and accessibility; Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, 2015); Mental Healthcare Act, 2017.
  • Ethical and professional aspects: informed consent, confidentiality, respect for autonomy and dignity, non-discrimination, cultural sensitivity, working in multidisciplinary teams (doctors, physiotherapists, special educators, social workers).

Important terms

  • Benchmark disability – a disability of 40% or more as certified (RPwD Act).
  • Assistive device – aids like wheelchairs, hearing aids, Braille, screen readers.
  • Divyang – term used by the Government of India for persons with disabilities.
  • Vocational rehabilitation – helping a person prepare for, find and keep suitable work.
  • Community-based rehabilitation (CBR) – rehabilitation through local community resources (WHO strategy).
