First Farmers

Quick summary

This chapter explains how humans moved from hunting and gathering to farming. It describes the four great river valley civilisations, the beginning of agriculture and animal domestication in the Neolithic age, the first farming villages of India, their organisation, trade, and how villages slowly led to cities.

Key points

  • Early humans (Homo habilis) made the first stone tools. Later humans improved technology step by step.
  • Mesolithic (middle stone age) people used tiny stone blades called microliths, fixed (hafted) on wooden or bone shafts as arrows and knives.
  • The last Ice Age ended about 12000–11000 years ago, beginning the Holocene epoch. Melting glaciers increased water, plants and animals, which helped settled life.
  • Neolithic ("new stone") age began with cultivation and domestication of animals, around 10000–8700 BCE in West Asia. Barley was the main crop, with wheat and flax.
  • Four river valley civilisations: Mesopotamia (Tigris–Euphrates), Egypt (Nile), China (Huang He – "Yellow River", also called "China's Sorrow"), and the Indian subcontinent (Sindhu–Saraswati). Chinese villages farmed wheat, millet and rice from about 7000 BCE.
  • First farmers of India: Mehrgarh (Baluchistan) shows continuous occupation from the Neolithic to the Harappan age. Other Neolithic sites: Burzahom and Gufkral (Kashmir), Chopani Mando, Koldihwa and Mahagara (Vindhya–Belan region, UP), Chirand and Senuwar (Bihar, around 2000 BCE), and sites in south India.
  • Village organisation: small villages of round huts with common storage places in the centre — showing central control and a hierarchy of power; at least about 100 people were needed for a village fully dependent on farming.
  • Skilled crafts like pottery developed; Japan's Jomon culture made pottery even in the Mesolithic.
  • Trade and transport: exchange of goods between villages over long distances began, though wheeled transport was not yet available.
  • Territoriality – awareness of a group's natural right over a region — grew with settled life.
  • Surplus food, crafts and trade led to the beginning of urbanisation.

Important terms

  • Microlith – very small stone blade used in composite tools.
  • Neolithic age – new stone age marked by farming and polished stone tools.
  • Domestication – taming and rearing of animals and plants by humans.
  • Holocene – the present geological epoch, after the last Ice Age.
  • Territoriality – sense of right over a particular area.

Important dates and people

PeriodEvent
c. 12000–11000 years agoEnd of last Ice Age; Holocene begins
10000–8700 BCEBeginning of cultivation (West Asia)
c. 7000 BCEFarming in Chinese villages
c. 2000 BCENeolithic villages in Bihar (Chirand)

5 important questions

Q1. What changes took place at the beginning of the Holocene?

Glaciers melted, rivers and seas got more water, and plants and animals for food increased. This helped people to settle down and begin farming.

Q2. What are microliths?

Tiny stone blades, as small as a fingernail, made by Mesolithic people. They were fixed on wooden or bone shafts to make arrows, spears and serrated knives.

Q3. Name the four river valley civilisations.

Mesopotamia (Tigris–Euphrates), Egypt (Nile), China (Huang He) and the Indian subcontinent (Sindhu–Saraswati).

Q4. Why is Mehrgarh important?

Mehrgarh in Baluchistan shows continuous human settlement from the Neolithic period up to the rise of the Harappan civilisation, giving evidence of the first farmers of the subcontinent.

Q5. Describe the organisation of Neolithic villages.

They were small, with permanent round huts and common storage places at the centre. This suggests central control of food production and a hierarchy of power; social rules developed too.

Exam tip

Remember regional Neolithic sites in pairs (Kashmir: Burzahom–Gufkral; Bihar: Chirand–Senuwar) for fill-in-the-blank questions.

First Cities of India

Quick summary

The Harappan civilisation was India's first urban civilisation. This chapter explains its discovery, its features such as town planning and drainage, the relations between its cities, its crafts, trade and administration, and the reasons for its decline.

Key points

  • More than 2000 Harappan sites are known, many in the basin of the Saraswati river, now called Ghaggar in India and Hakra in Pakistan.
  • Pre-Harappan Neolithic cultures include the Togao and Ravi (Hakra) cultures. The Early Harappan phase began around 3300 BCE; the mature (urban) phase was around 2600–1900 BCE.
  • Discovery: Charles Masson first wrote about Harappa (1829); Alexander Cunningham, first Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, worked there in 1872–73. Excavation of Harappa began in 1921 and of Mohenjodaro in 1921–22 (Rakhaldas Banerjee). Mortimer Wheeler excavated in 1946.
  • Lothal (Gujarat, on the Bhogavo river) was excavated in 1955–60 by S. R. Rao; it had a dockyard. Other sites: Kalibangan, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Banawali.
  • Features: planned cities with a fortified citadel and a lower town; straight streets crossing at right angles; burnt-brick houses; covered drains; the Great Bath at Mohenjodaro; granaries; standard weights and measures; seals with a script that is still not deciphered.
  • Cities were fortified, matching the ancient Indian idea of a "pura".
  • Production and trade: beads of semi-precious stones, shell, copper and bronze objects, pottery; trade with Mesopotamia (Akkadian empire, founded 2334 BCE); outposts in Gujarat helped trade.
  • Cities depended on villages for food; there was a network between cities, towns and villages.
  • Decline (from about 1900 BCE): drying up of the Saraswati, climate change and less rainfall, floods, decline in trade with Mesopotamia. People moved to smaller villages, leading to Chalcolithic cultures.
  • The old idea that Vedic Aryans arrived about 1500 BCE and destroyed the cities is now seriously questioned.

Important terms

  • Citadel – raised, fortified part of a city for important buildings.
  • Great Bath – large public water tank at Mohenjodaro.
  • Seal – carved stone stamp with signs and animal figures, used in trade.
  • Ziggurat – stepped temple of Mesopotamia.
  • Dockyard – place where ships are built or loaded (Lothal).

Important dates and people

1921–22Mohenjodaro excavated (R. D. Banerjee)
1955–60Lothal excavated (S. R. Rao)
c. 1900 BCEDecline of cities

5 important questions

Q1. Describe the town planning of Harappan cities.

Cities had a fortified citadel and lower town, straight streets crossing at right angles, burnt-brick houses with wells and bathrooms, and an underground covered drainage system. Public buildings like the Great Bath and granaries show planning.

Q2. Why is Lothal important?

Lothal in Gujarat had a dockyard, showing that Harappans traded by sea. It was also a centre of bead-making and trade with other regions.

Q3. What do we learn from Harappan seals?

Seals carry animal figures and a script, and were used in trade to mark goods. They show trade links (some found in Mesopotamia), religious beliefs and art.

Q4. Give the reasons for the decline of the Harappan cities.

Drying of the Saraswati river, change in climate and rainfall, floods, decline in trade with Mesopotamia and pressure on resources made people leave cities for villages.

Q5. Who was the first Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India?

Sir Alexander Cunningham. He conducted excavations at Harappa in 1872–73.

Exam tip

Learn site → state/river → special feature (e.g. Lothal – Bhogavo – dockyard); such tables answer many objective questions.

Chalcolithic Villages in India

Quick summary

After the Harappan cities declined, people lived in farming villages that used both copper and stone tools. This chapter studies these Chalcolithic cultures across India, especially in Maharashtra (Savalda, Malwa, Jorwe), and the Megalithic period with its stone burial monuments.

Key points

  • Chalcolithic = copper + stone. These cultures used copper tools along with stone blades. They lacked the town planning of the mature Harappan period.
  • Rajasthan: Ahar or Banas culture (on the Ahar, a tributary of the Banas); Ganeshwar–Jodhpura culture near the copper mines of Khetri.
  • Madhya Pradesh: Kayatha culture (near Ujjain, on the Chhoti Kali Sindh); Malwa culture (1800–1200 BCE).
  • Gujarat: chalcolithic settlements ran alongside Harappan phases; Prabhas culture (south) and Rangpur culture (north-east); Kutch–Saurashtra villages were abandoned by 1900 BCE.
  • Maharashtra: Savalda culture (2000–1800 BCE) came before the Late Harappans at Daimabad. Then came the Malwa people (around 1600 BCE) — they founded the first permanent farming villages in Maharashtra — followed by the Jorwe culture.
  • Inamgaon (Pune district) chronology: Malwa culture 1600–1400 BCE; Early Jorwe 1400–1000 BCE; Late Jorwe 1000–700 BCE. Other Jorwe sites: Nevasa, Daimabad, Chandoli.
  • Life in these villages: farming of wheat, barley, jowar, pulses; painted pottery (black-on-red); houses of wattle and daub; burials under house floors, sometimes in urns; copper objects.
  • Megalithic period: burial monuments made of huge stone slabs — stone circles, dolmens, cists — called megaliths. Most in India date to 1500–500 BCE; in Vidarbha (e.g. Junapani near Nagpur) they are dated to about 1000–400 BCE. Megalithic people used iron tools and black-and-red pottery.

Important terms

  • Chalcolithic – period using both copper and stone tools.
  • Megalith – monument made of large stones, usually over a burial.
  • Urn burial – burial of remains in a pot, often under the floor.
  • Black-and-red ware – pottery with black inside and red outside.

Quick summary

The Vedic period gets its name from the Vedas, the oldest literature of India. This chapter introduces Vedic literature, the region where Vedic culture grew, and life in the Early Vedic and Later Vedic periods — society, economy, religion and polity.

Key points

  • "Vid" means to know; Veda means knowledge. There are four Vedas: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvaveda. Verses of the Rigveda are called richa.
  • It is generally agreed that the Rigveda was composed in India around 1500 BCE. Vedic literature includes Samhitas, Brahmanas, Aranyakas and Upanishads.
  • In 1583 the Italian merchant Filippo Sassetti noticed similarities between Sanskrit and Latin. Sir William Jones founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784; comparative study of languages (philology) developed.
  • Saptasindhu – the land of seven rivers: Saraswati, Sindhu and the five rivers of Punjab — Shatadru (Sutlej), Vipasha (Beas), Asikni (Chenab), Parushni (Ravi), Vitasta (Jhelum).
  • Early Vedic society: organised in families (kula), clans and tribes (jana). The Rigveda mentions the Dasharajnya Yuddha (battle of ten kings).
  • Economy: cattle-rearing and farming; "urvara" = ploughed cultivable land; Pushan protected animals. Craftsmen: rathakara (chariot maker), takshan (carpenter), vayya (weaver), karmar (metal worker), charmanna (leather worker). Boats with a hundred oars ("aritra") are mentioned; carts were called "anas".
  • Religion: worship of nature gods — Indra, Agni, Varuna, Surya, Ashwins; yajnas (sacrifices).
  • Polity: the chief (rajan) was assisted by assemblies called sabha and samiti.
  • Varna system: Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra; it became established by the end of the Early Vedic period and rigid later.
  • Later Vedic period (about 1000–600 BCE): settled agriculture expanded towards the Ganga plains, iron came into use, kingship became stronger, and territorial states called janapadas formed.

Janapadas and Republics

Quick summary

Over time, Vedic tribes (janas) settled in fixed territories, which became janapadas — the first well-established states of ancient India. This chapter explains how janapadas formed, how they expanded, and the republics or federations of states (ganarajyas and sanghas) that existed beside monarchies.

Key points

  • Jana – a tribe of related families; its settlement was called grama. At first the boundaries of a jana were not fixed.
  • When generations settled in one region, the jana became a janapada — a state with territory. Clans merged; for example, the Bharatas merged with the Kurus.
  • The chief of a janapada was the rajan. The sabha and samiti were the highest assemblies from the start of the Vedic period.
  • Territoriality and autonomy: each janapada developed a sense of its own territory and independent administration.
  • Most janapadas were monarchies, but some were oligarchies / republics. Texts mention types like rajya, svarajya, bhaujya, vairajya, samrajya; Uttar Kuru and Uttar Madra were "vairajya" — ruled collectively, not by a king.
  • Gana = ruling group of members of equal status; sangha = a state formed by several kulas or janapadas coming together. By the 6th century BCE many sangharajyas existed.
  • Three types of federations: (1) a ganarajya of one kula (Malava, Shibi); (2) a ganarajya of several kulas — e.g. the Vajji ganasangha of eight kulas (Vajji, Lichchhavi, Jnatrika, Videha; the Lichchhavis were most influential); (3) a sangharajya of several ganarajyas (Yaudheya–Kshudraka).
  • Ayudhajivi sanghas lived by warfare (Trigarta, Yaudheya, Malava, Kshudraka). Varta–shastropajivi sanghas lived by trade, farming, cattle-rearing and war (Kamboja, Surashtra). "Varta" = trade and commerce.
  • Administration: elected representatives (ganamukhya) formed the assembly (ganaparishad); its head was called adhyaksha or raja. Decisions were taken by discussion and voting.

Important terms

  • Jana – tribe.
  • Janapada – territorial state.
  • Ganarajya / Ganasangha – republic or oligarchy ruled by a group of equals.
  • Ganamukhya – elected representative in a ganasangha.
  • Ayudhajivi – living by the profession of arms.

Important dates and people

PeriodDevelopment
Early VedicJanas with sabha and samiti
Later Vedic (c. 1000–600 BCE)Janapadas formed

5 important questions

Q1. How did janas become janapadas?

As tribes settled permanently in one region over generations and practised agriculture, they developed definite territories and administration. Such territorial states were called janapadas.

Q2. What is meant by ganasangha?

A state not ruled by a single monarch but collectively by a group of members of equal status (gana), sometimes formed by several clans or states joining together (sangha).

Q3. Describe the Vajji ganasangha.

It was a federation of eight clans including the Vajjis, Lichchhavis, Jnatrikas and Videhas. The Lichchhavis were the most influential. It was governed by an assembly of representatives.

Q4. Distinguish between ayudhajivi and varta-shastropajivi sanghas.

Ayudhajivi sanghas (like Trigarta, Yaudheya) lived mainly by warfare. Varta-shastropajivi sanghas (like Kamboja, Surashtra) lived by trade, farming and animal husbandry as well as war.

Q5. How was a ganasangha administered?

Each region elected a ganamukhya. All ganamukhyas formed the ganaparishad, headed by an adhyaksha or raja. Decisions were taken collectively in the assembly.

Quick summary

Around the 6th century BCE, sixteen large states called mahajanapadas arose across north India, with new cities, trade and guilds — the "Second Urbanisation". This chapter covers the mahajanapadas, Ashmaka (in Maharashtra), administration, the new philosophies, and the rise of Jainism and Buddhism.

Key points

  • Janapadas with fixed borders and administration had formed by about 1000 BCE. Later sixteen mahajanapadas arose from the north-west to Magadha. The growth of cities in this period is called the Second Urbanisation (the first was Harappan).
  • Examples: Magadha (first capital Girivraja/Rajagriha), Kosala, Vatsa, Avanti, Kashi, Kuru, Panchala, Gandhara, Kamboja, Anga, Vajji (confederation of eight clans), Malla, Ashmaka etc.
  • Ashmaka (Assaka) – identified with present-day Maharashtra; the only mahajanapada in Dakshinapatha (south), on the banks of the Godavari, next to Avanti. Jataka stories (Assaka Jataka, Chulla Kalinga Jataka) mention its kings.
  • Economy: cities, coins, trade routes, and guilds (shrenis). Head of an artisans' guild – jyeshthaka; head of a merchants' guild – shreshthi (setthi). Paid workers – karmakara; unpaid – dasa.
  • Administration: kings with ministers, officials, army and revenue systems; republics had assemblies.
  • Philosophy: questioning of rituals led to the Upanishads; wandering ascetics (parivrajakas / shramanas) taught new ideas.
  • Jainism: Vardhaman Mahavira, 24th tirthankara (Rishabhanath was the first). Five great vows (Panchamahavratas): non-violence, truth, non-stealing, non-possession, celibacy. Triratna: right faith, right knowledge, right conduct. He founded the Jaina Sangha.
  • Buddhism: Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha (also Tathagata, Shakyamuni). His first sermon at Sarnath is called Dhammachakkapavattana. Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path; Trisarana — refuge in Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha. He founded the Bhikkhu Sangha.

Quick summary

This chapter explains the ancient links between the Indian subcontinent and Iran (Persia). It covers the Achaemenid (Persian) empire, its rule over north-western India and its political and cultural impact, the famous city of Taxila, and Alexander's invasion.

Key points

  • The Iranian empire is called the Persian empire because it began in the Pars region.
  • It was founded by Cyrus II (Cyrus the Great) of the Achaemenid dynasty. Darius I made Susa the capital and built the many-pillared hall called Apadana; the Royal Road linked distant parts of the empire.
  • The Persians fought the Greeks (e.g. Battle of Marathon); later a treaty was signed between the Greek confederacy and the Achaemenids.
  • Achaemenids in India: they conquered small kingdoms in the north-west and expanded up to Punjab (Gandhara and the Sindhu region were Persian provinces).
  • Scylax, sent by Darius, explored the Sindhu river; his log, the Periplus of Scylax, was the first source about India for the Greeks. He was the first Ionian Greek to step on Indian land.
  • Impact: Persian coins — gold daric and silver siglos; the Kharoshthi script (developed from Aramaic) in the north-west; influence on Mauryan art and administration (pillars, edicts); growth of trade.
  • Taxila (Takshashila): a great centre of learning and trade in Gandhara. Greek historians called it prosperous, crowded and well administered. Chandragupta Maurya later made it a regional capital.
  • Alexander of Macedonia ("Alexander" = protector) invaded north-western India (about 327–326 BCE), conquering kingdoms from Afghanistan to Sindh–Punjab. He fought King Porus on the Jhelum (Hydaspes). His tired army refused to go further, and he returned; he died soon after (323 BCE).
  • After his death, Chandragupta Maurya quickly built a vast empire from Bihar to Afghanistan and developed the Uttarapatha highway (today's Grand Trunk Road), starting from the port of Tamralipti (Tamluk) in Bengal.

Important terms

  • Achaemenid – the ruling dynasty of the first Persian empire.
  • Periplus – a sailor's logbook/guide of a sea voyage.
  • Daric / Siglos – gold / silver coins of the Persian empire.
  • Kharoshthi – a script written right to left, used in north-west India.
  • Uttarapatha – ancient northern trade route (Grand Trunk Road).

India during Mauryan period

Quick summary

Magadha became the first empire of India. This chapter traces its rise under the Haryanka and Nanda dynasties, the founding of the Mauryan empire by Chandragupta Maurya, Emperor Ashoka and his dhamma, and Mauryan administration, trade, art and society, including Mauryan presence in Maharashtra.

Key points

  • Chakravarti – a ruler whose chariot could move in all four directions unopposed. Chandragupta Maurya is regarded as the first Chakravarti emperor.
  • Haryanka dynasty (6th century BCE): Bimbisara, first well-known king, used marriage alliances (Kosala, Lichchhavi, Videha, Madra) and founded Rajagriha at the foot of Girivraja fort. Ajatashatru expanded Magadha; Pataligrama later became Pataliputra.
  • Nanda dynasty: Mahapadmananda seized the throne; he expanded the empire and is called the first great emperor of India. The Nandas had a huge army (2,00,000 infantry, 60,000 cavalry, 6000 elephants, 2000 chariots).
  • Mauryan empire: Chandragupta Maurya defeated the Nandas with the help of Chanakya (Kautilya), author of the Arthashastra. It was the first well-organised, strongly controlled empire in India. Bindusara kept it intact.
  • Ashoka was crowned in 268 BCE; he called himself "Devanampiya Piyadasi". After conquering Kalinga, he was shocked by the bloodshed, gave up war (digvijaya) and followed dhamma (dhammavijaya).
  • Ashoka accepted Buddhism but did not force it on people. He sent monks abroad, including his son Mahendra and daughter Sanghamitra to Sri Lanka.
  • Most of his edicts are in Brahmi script, deciphered by James Prinsep in 1837.
  • Maharashtra: Mauryan rule reached Maharashtra (321–181 BCE). At Sopara, Bhagwanlal Indraji excavated a stupa ("Buruda Rajacha Kot") and found fragments of Ashoka's 8th rock edict; the 9th was found at Bhuigaon. Sopara and Chaul were trade and Buddhist centres.
  • Administration: a council of ministers (mantriparishad), officers called amatyas, provinces under princes, efficient revenue, spies and army.

Quick summary

After the decline of the Mauryas, India was divided among several powers. This chapter covers the Shunga empire in the north, the rise of the Satavahanas in the Deccan (with their capital at Paithan in Maharashtra), and the administration, literature, art and social life of this period.

Key points

  • The Heliodorus pillar at Besnagar (Vidisha) shows that some Greeks followed Vaishnavism. Sanskrit literature was encouraged under the Shungas.
  • The last Shunga king was killed by his minister Vasudeva, who founded the Kanva dynasty (described in Banabhatta's Harshacharita).
  • Satavahanas: rose in the south after the Mauryas; the Puranas call them Andhras or Andhrabhrityas. Simuka, the first king, is mentioned in the Naneghat inscription. Capital: Pratishthan (Paithan) in Maharashtra.
  • Important kings: Shri Satakarni, Hala, Gautamiputra Satakarni (defeated the Shaka satraps who had taken western India; extended power over central India and Rajasthan), Yajna Satakarni.
  • Trade and towns: Paithan, Tagar (Ter), Nashik and Karhad grew; the "Periplus of the Erythraean Sea" mentions Paithan and Ter as important market towns of Dakshinapatha. Trade with the Roman world flourished.
  • Literature: King Hala compiled the Gathasaptashati in Maharashtri Prakrit; Gunadhya wrote Brihatkatha in Paishachi Prakrit; Sarvavarma wrote the Sanskrit grammar Katantra.
  • Art: rock-cut caves and chaityas (Karle, Bhaja, Nashik, Ajanta's early caves), stupas at Sanchi and Bharhut; Persian–Greek influence of Mauryan times decreased.

Quick summary

From the 2nd century BCE to the 4th century CE, tribes from Central Asia — Indo-Greeks, Shakas, Pahlavas and Kushanas — set up kingdoms in north-west India. Later the Guptas built a great empire, followed by the Vardhans and the Karkotakas of Kashmir. The chapter also covers trade, coins, art and Indo-Roman trade centres in Maharashtra.

Key points

  • Indo-Greeks: after Alexander's death his governors became independent. Two branches were founded by Demetrius and Eucratides; about 40 Indo-Greek kings ruled in all. They issued fine portrait coins.
  • Shakas: Maues (Moga) was the first Shaka king in India, ruling Gandhara and Punjab. The Pahlava king Gondophernes later defeated the Shakas.
  • Kushanas: ruled up to Kabul and Kashmir. Kanishka had two capitals — Purushapura (Peshawar) and Mathura. He supported Buddhism.
  • Art: the Gandhara style blended Indian and Greek–Roman art; the Mathura style also developed. Images of Buddha, Saraswati, Vishnu, Surya, Shiva and Kartikeya were made for the first time in this period.

Samudragupta's conquests are described in the Prayag Prashasti (Allahabad pillar); he performed the Ashvamedha. Chandragupta II took Malwa, Gujarat and Kathiawar from the Shakas.
  • Gupta administration: provinces and districts under officers called vishayapati; traders' bodies — nigama, shreni, gana; standardised gold coins; developed sculpture.
  • Vardhan empire: founded by Pushyabhuti at Sthaneshwar (Thanesar); Prabhakarvardhan took the title "Parambhattaraka Maharajadhiraja"; Harshavardhan was the greatest ruler. Nalanda University flourished, attracting students from China and elsewhere.
  • Karkotaka dynasty of Kashmir (7th–9th century): founded by Durlabhavardhan; Lalitaditya (724–760 CE) built the Martand Sun temple. Kalhana's Rajatarangini gives details.

Quick summary

Ancient India had trade and cultural links with lands to the north-west and with China. This chapter describes trade with West Asia and the Mediterranean, India's ties with Gandhara (today's Afghanistan and Pakistan), and the spread of Buddhism and Indian culture to China along the Silk Route.

Key points

  • Indians who travelled abroad never forced their culture or rule on others; they exchanged culture peacefully, enriching local cultures.
  • West Asia: the Baveru Jataka mentions trade with Baveru, identified with Babylon (a Mesopotamian kingdom, 1800–600 BCE; Hammurabi was its famous king; Cyrus II conquered it in 539 BCE). Sailors used trained crows called "dishakak" to find land.
  • Ashoka's 13th rock edict names Greek kings, showing contact with the Hellenistic world.
  • Periplus of the Erythraean Sea – a sailor's handbook describing Indian Ocean trade. Underwater surveys near Bet Dwarka (2000–2001) found amphorae, anchors and pottery, proof of sea trade. Roman gold coins were valued in India for their gold.
  • Gandhara (Afghanistan–Pakistan): a meeting point of Indian, Greek, Roman, Persian and Shaka cultures. Kanishka's stupa at Shah-ji-ki-Dheri near Peshawar was excavated. Kushana coins in Central Asia carry Prakrit in Kharoshthi script.
  • Bamiyan: about 750 caves cut in the Kuh-e-Baba range and giant Buddha statues, destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. Viharas (sangharamas) were monks' residential complexes.
  • Silk Route: from Xinjiang (China) it split into two lines reaching Taxila — via Kashgar to Gandhara, and via Yarkand and Leh to Kashmir. Sir Aurel Stein first surveyed it archaeologically.
  • India and China: Buddhist monks Kashyapa Matanga and Dharmaraksha went to China in 67 CE with texts on white horses; the Chinese emperor built the White Horse Temple, the first Buddhist temple in China.
  • Chinese pilgrims Fa-Hien and Yuan Chwang (Xuanzang) visited India and described its viharas and stupas.
  • Art: the Serindian style (Seres = China + India) arose in Xinjiang; the Mogao caves near Dunhuang have Buddhist paintings. Both Theravada (Hinayana) and Mahayana spread in China.

Important terms

  • Silk Route – ancient trade routes linking China with India, Central Asia and Europe.
  • Sangharama – residential complex for Buddhist monks.
  • Amphora – tall Roman jar for wine or oil.
  • Serindian art – Indian–Chinese blended art style of Xinjiang.

Q3. Write a note on the White Horse Temple.

In 67 CE Indian monks Kashyapa Matanga and Dharmaraksha took Buddhist texts to China on white horses and translated them. The emperor built the White Horse Temple in their honour — the first Buddhist temple in China.

Q4. What were the routes of the Silk Route to India?

From Xinjiang one route went from Kashgar to Gandhara and Taxila; another went from Yarkand through Leh to Kashmir and on to Taxila.

Q5. What evidence of Indo-Roman trade was found at Bet Dwarka?

Underwater surveys in 2000–2001 found Roman amphorae, anchors, potsherds and a lead ball, proving sea trade with the Roman world.

India during Mughal period

Quick summary

The Mughals ruled India from 1526 to 1857. This chapter covers the establishment and expansion of Mughal rule, Akbar's revenue reforms, Mughal art, architecture and literature, trade, industries and social life, and the Mughal empire's relations with the Deccan, including the Marathas.

Key points

  • Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat (1526) and founded Mughal rule. His autobiography is the Baburnama.
  • Humayun lost the throne to the Afghan Sher Shah Suri, who united the Afghans and introduced good administration (roads, rupaiya coin, land survey); Humayun later regained it.
  • Akbar turned the kingdom into a great empire from Kabul to Bengal and from Kashmir to Varhad–Khandesh. He followed a policy of tolerance (Sulh-i-kul) and built a strong administration (mansabdari system).
  • Revenue reforms (Raja Todarmal): land was measured and classified, tax fixed on average produce; farmers got a patta (document stating rights and tax) and gave a kabuliyat (acceptance of the tax).
  • Later Mughals: Jahangir, Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb. After Aurangzeb the empire declined; it ended in 1857 with Bahadur Shah Zafar.
  • Architecture: Indo-Islamic style — Humayun's Tomb, Fatehpur Sikri, Red Fort, Taj Mahal, Jama Masjid.
  • Painting: Persian-style miniature painting developed into Mughal painting; regional schools — Rajasthani and Pahari — grew.
  • Literature and education: works in Persian, Hindi and regional languages; madrasas at Sambhal, Ahmedabad and Ahmednagar (by Saint Tahir).
  • Trade and industries: textiles, crafts, ports; European factories (Portuguese, Dutch, French, English) were set up during this period.
  • Mughals and the Deccan: Mughals fought the Deccan Sultanates and the Marathas. Later the Marathas grew powerful in the north too — in 1758 a Maratha army under Raghunath Rao pushed Abdali's army back beyond Attock (Punjab campaign).

Important terms

  • Patta – document given to a farmer stating his land and tax.
  • Kabuliyat – farmer's written acceptance of the tax amount.
  • Mansabdari – Mughal system of ranking officers by the number of soldiers they kept.
  • Miniature painting – small, detailed paintings in manuscripts.

5 important questions

Q1. Explain Akbar's land revenue system.

Land was measured and classified by fertility; tax was fixed on average produce over years. Farmers received a patta and signed a kabuliyat accepting the tax. It made revenue fair and regular.

Q2. Write a note on Mughal painting.

It began with Persian-style miniatures in manuscripts like the Baburnama and developed under Akbar and Jahangir with Indian themes — court scenes, portraits, nature. Rajasthani and Pahari styles grew from it.

Q3. What were the features of Mughal architecture?

Domes, arches, minarets, gardens (charbagh), use of red sandstone and white marble with inlay work — e.g. Humayun's Tomb, Fatehpur Sikri, Red Fort and the Taj Mahal.

Q4. How did Sher Shah Suri improve administration?

He built roads with sarais, introduced the silver rupaiya, organised land measurement and revenue, and improved law and order.

Q5. What was the significance of the Maratha Punjab campaign of 1758?

The Maratha army under Raghunath Rao reached Attock and pushed Abdali's forces back, showing that Maratha power had spread to north-west India.

Quick summary

This chapter traces the rise of Maratha power — from the awakening brought by the saints, through Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's founding of Swarajya and the Maratha war of independence against Aurangzeb, to the Peshwa period when the Marathas became an all-India power. It also covers Maratha administration, art, literature, trade and society.

Key points

  • Saints of Maharashtra — Chakradhar Swami, Sant Namdev, Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Eknath, Sant Tukaram, Samarth Ramdas and others — fought superstition and fatalism and gave people self-respect and unity.
  • In the early 17th century the Nizamshahi and Adilshahi ruled Maharashtra. Shahajiraje is called the visionary of Swarajya.
  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj founded Swarajya with the Mawalas (people of the Mawal valleys). His first capital was Rajgad; later Raigad, where he was crowned in 1674.
  • After taking Kalyan–Bhiwandi (1657) Swarajya reached the coast. He built a strong navy (about 400 ships by 1675) and sea forts — he is called the "Father of the Indian Navy". Naval experts: Mainak Bhandari, Daulat Khan, Kanhoji Angre (later).
  • Shivaji Maharaj died on 3 April 1680 at Raigad.
  • Maratha war of independence (1680–1707): Aurangzeb came to the Deccan; Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was cruelly killed (11 March 1689); Rajaram Maharaj continued the struggle from Jinji; after his death (1700) Maharani Tarabai fought on until Aurangzeb died (1707).
  • Administration: the Ashtapradhan Mandal — Peshwa, Amatya, Sachiv, Mantri, Senapati, Sumant, Nyayadhish, Panditrao. Spy network under Bahirji Naik. Provinces under deshadhikaris; land measured (chavarana); crop-sharing (batai) system.
  • Release of Shahu Maharaj (1707): the Mughals released him to divide the Marathas; he defeated Tarabai's side. Balaji Vishwanath helped him and became Peshwa.
  • Peshwa period: Bajirao I, Nanasaheb Peshwa and others expanded Maratha power to the north; Mahadji Shinde managed Delhi affairs (from 1771). Peshwa Bajirao II was defeated by the British (1818).
  • Culture: wadas and temples with murals (Menavali, Wai, Morgaon); powadas and katavas by shahirs; pathshalas in Wai, Pune etc.; market towns (kasbas) grew.
