Maps and Scales

(Inset).

Quick summary

A map is a drawing of the whole or part of the earth's surface on a flat sheet, reduced to scale. Every map has essential elements: title, scale, direction, legend, grid and projection. Scale is the ratio between distance on the map and actual distance on the ground. Maps are classified by scale and by purpose, and scales are shown in three ways: statement, representative fraction and graphical (linear) scale.

Key points

  • Map (नकाशा): a selective, symbolised and generalised representation of the earth's surface on a flat surface, drawn to scale.
  • Study of maps and map-making is called cartography.
  • Essentials of a map: title, scale, direction (north line), legend/key, conventional signs and symbols, grid (latitude–longitude), projection, source and date.
  • Scale = map distance : ground distance.
  • Methods of showing scale:
  • 1. Statement (verbal) scale – in words, e.g. "1 cm represents 5 km".
  • 2. Representative Fraction (RF) – a ratio with no units, e.g. 1:50,000. It is understood in any unit system.
  • 3. Graphical (linear/bar) scale – a line divided into parts showing ground distances; it stays correct even if the map is enlarged or reduced.
  • Large-scale maps show small areas in great detail (cadastral maps, topographical maps). Small-scale maps show large areas with less detail (atlas and wall maps).
  • In India, the Survey of India (founded 1767, headquarters at Dehradun) prepares topographical maps (toposheets).
  • Maps by purpose: physical (relief), political, climatic, soil, population, economic, road and thematic maps.

Important terms

  • RF (Representative Fraction) – scale written as a fraction or ratio, numerator always 1.
  • Cadastral map – very large-scale map showing property boundaries (village maps with survey numbers).
  • Topographical map – shows relief, drainage, vegetation, settlements and transport in detail.
  • Thematic map – shows one theme, e.g. rainfall or population density.
  • Legend (key) – explains symbols and colours used.
  • Conventional signs – standard symbols used on maps worldwide or nationally.
  • Map projection – a method of transferring the earth's curved grid onto a flat surface.

Formulas

  • RF = map distance ÷ ground distance (both in the same units).
  • 1 km = 1,00,000 cm; 1 m = 100 cm.
  • Ground distance = map distance × denominator of RF.
  • Common conversions: 1:50,000 means 1 cm = 0.5 km (500 m); 1:1,00,000 means 1 cm = 1 km.

Worked example 1 (statement to RF): "1 cm represents 4 km".

  1. 4 km = 4 × 1,00,000 cm = 4,00,000 cm.
  2. RF = 1 : 4,00,000.

Worked example 2 (RF to statement): RF = 1 : 2,50,000.

  1. 1 cm on map = 2,50,000 cm on ground.
  2. 2,50,000 ÷ 1,00,000 = 2.5 km.
  3. Statement: 1 cm represents 2.5 km.

5 important questions

Q1. Convert the statement "1 cm represents 10 km" into RF.

10 km = 10 × 1,00,000 = 10,00,000 cm. So RF = 1 : 10,00,000.

Q2. On a map with RF 1:50,000, two villages are 6 cm apart. Find the actual distance.

Ground distance = 6 × 50,000 = 3,00,000 cm = 3,00,000 ÷ 1,00,000 = 3 km.

Q3. Explain the essential elements of a map.

  • Title: what the map shows.
  • Scale: map to ground ratio.
  • Direction: north arrow.
  • Legend and conventional signs.
  • Grid/latitude–longitude and projection.
  • Source, date, inset map.

Q4. Describe the methods of representing scale with merits and demerits.

  • Statement scale: easy to understand; depends on unit system; wrong if map is resized.
  • RF: universal, unit-free; ordinary people may find it hard.
  • Graphical scale: distances measured directly; stays correct after enlarging or reducing.
  • Steps to draw a graphical scale (choose line length, divide into primary and secondary parts).

Q5. Distinguish between large-scale and small-scale maps.

  • Large-scale: small area, more detail; e.g. cadastral (1:4,000), toposheets (1:50,000).
  • Small-scale: large area, less detail; e.g. atlas maps of the world.
  • Uses: planning, land records (large) vs general study (small).
  • Examples and comparison table.

Exam tip

Practise at least five scale conversions — they are sure numerical marks. Always convert km to cm (× 1,00,000) before writing the RF.

Map Projections

Quick summary

A map projection is a method of showing the curved surface of the earth – its network of latitudes and longitudes – on a flat sheet of paper. Because a sphere cannot be flattened without stretching or tearing, every projection distorts area, shape, distance or direction in some way. Geographers choose a projection according to the purpose of the map and the location and size of the area.

Key points

  • The network of parallels and meridians is called the graticule. A projection transfers this graticule onto a plane.
  • Only a globe shows area, shape, distance and direction correctly at the same time; no flat map can do all four.
  • Classification by the surface used: cylindrical (paper wrapped as a cylinder – best near the equator), conical (paper as a cone – best for mid-latitudes), zenithal / azimuthal (flat plane touching the globe at one point – best for polar areas).
  • Classification by property preserved: equal-area (homolographic) – correct area; orthomorphic (conformal) – correct shape over small areas; azimuthal – correct direction from the centre; equidistant – correct distance along some lines.
  • Classification by method: perspective (with a light source) and non-perspective (mathematical) projections.
  • Mercator's projection (Gerardus Mercator, 1569) is a cylindrical orthomorphic projection. Straight lines on it are lines of constant compass direction (rhumb lines / loxodromes), so it is used for navigation charts. It greatly exaggerates areas in high latitudes – Greenland looks almost as large as Africa, though Africa is about 14 times larger.
  • Conical projection with one standard parallel is suitable for narrow east–west areas in mid-latitudes. Bonne's projection is a modified conical equal-area projection.
  • Sinusoidal and Mollweide projections are equal-area and are used for world distribution maps (population, crops) and for continents like Africa and South America.
  • The Survey of India used the polyconic projection for its older topographical sheets; the newer Open Series Maps use UTM.

Important terms

  • Graticule – the network of parallels and meridians.
  • Standard parallel – the parallel where the cone or cylinder touches the globe; scale is correct along it.
  • Reduced earth – the globe drawn to the scale of the map.
  • Rhumb line (loxodrome) – a line cutting all meridians at the same angle.
  • Great circle – the shortest route between two points on the globe.

Formulas

  • Radius of reduced earth r = actual radius ÷ scale denominator (take R = 6,400 km = 640,000,000 cm).
  • Simple cylindrical: length of equator = 2πr; distance between meridians = 2πr × interval ÷ 360.
  • Conical (one standard parallel φ): radius of standard parallel on the map = r × cot φ.

5 important questions

Q1. Find the radius of the reduced earth and the length of the equator for scale 1:250,000,000. Also find the spacing of meridians at 15° interval.

  1. r = 640,000,000 ÷ 250,000,000 = 2.56 cm
  2. Length of equator = 2 × 3.1416 × 2.56 = 16.08 cm
  3. Spacing of meridians = 16.08 × 15 ÷ 360 = 0.67 cm

Q2. Why is Mercator's projection used for navigation?

Because it is orthomorphic and any straight line on it is a line of constant compass bearing (rhumb line), so sailors can follow one direction to reach a place.

Q3. Classify map projections with examples.

  • Need for projections.
  • By developable surface: cylindrical, conical, zenithal (with diagrams).
  • By property: equal-area, orthomorphic, azimuthal, equidistant.
  • By method: perspective and non-perspective.
  • Table of examples and uses.

Q4. Describe Mercator's projection – its properties, merits and limitations.

  • Construction idea (cylindrical, spacing of parallels increases towards poles).
  • Properties: orthomorphic, rhumb lines straight.
  • Uses: navigation, ocean currents, wind maps, equatorial areas.
  • Limitations: huge area distortion at high latitudes; poles cannot be shown.

Q5. Explain the factors considered in choosing a map projection.

  • Purpose: area (distribution maps), shape, direction (navigation, air routes).
  • Location of area: equatorial, mid-latitude, polar.
  • Shape and extent of area: east–west or north–south.
  • Examples: Mollweide for world population, conical for India's states, zenithal for Antarctica.

Exam tip

Practise the reduced-earth calculation step by step and draw the graticule neatly with a sharp pencil – practical-style questions carry easy marks.

Topographical Maps and Conventional Signs

Quick summary

Topographical maps are large-scale maps that show both natural features (relief, rivers, forests) and man-made features (settlements, roads, railways) of a small area in detail. In India they are prepared by the Survey of India. Reading them needs an understanding of the sheet numbering system, conventional signs and colours, and contour patterns that show relief.

Key points

  • The Survey of India (set up in 1767, headquarters Dehradun) prepares topographical maps (toposheets) of India.
  • Sheet numbering (India and Adjacent Countries series): a 4° × 4° sheet at 1:1,000,000 has a number (e.g. 55); it is divided into 16 sheets of 1° × 1° at 1:250,000 lettered A to P (e.g. 55K); each of these into 16 sheets of 15′ × 15′ at 1:50,000 numbered 1–16 (e.g. 55K/16). Sheets of 7½′ × 7½′ at 1:25,000 are further divisions.
  • Since 2005 the Survey of India also issues Open Series Maps based on the UTM projection and WGS-84 datum for public use.
  • Conventional signs and symbols are standard marks used to show features such as temples, wells, post offices, bridges, roads and railways.
  • Colours on Survey of India maps: blue – water bodies; green – forests and vegetation; brown – contours and sand features; yellow – cultivated land; white – uncultivated land; red – roads, settlements and grid lines; black – railways, boundaries, names.
  • Relief is shown by contours (lines joining places of equal height above mean sea level), spot heights, benchmarks, triangulation stations, hachures and layer tints. On 1:50,000 sheets the contour interval is usually 20 m.
  • Contour patterns: close contours – steep slope; widely spaced – gentle slope; closely spaced at the top and wide below – concave slope; the reverse – convex slope; concentric circles – conical hill; V-shapes pointing upstream – V-shaped valley; V-shapes pointing downhill – ridge or spur; contours merging – cliff.
  • Map interpretation covers relief and drainage, natural vegetation, land use, settlements (pattern and type), transport and communication, and occupations.

Important terms

  • Toposheet – a topographical sheet of the Survey of India.
  • Contour (समोच्च रेषा) – a line joining places of equal elevation.
  • Contour interval (vertical interval) – the difference in height between two successive contours.
  • Benchmark – a surveyed point of exact height marked on a permanent object.
  • Grid reference – location of a point using eastings and northings.

Formulas

  • Gradient = Vertical interval (VI) ÷ Horizontal equivalent (HE)
  • Example: two contours of 300 m and 400 m are 2 km apart on the ground → gradient = 100 m ÷ 2,000 m = 1 : 20.

5 important questions

Q1. What is a contour interval? What is its usual value on a 1:50,000 toposheet?

It is the vertical difference in height between two successive contour lines; on Survey of India 1:50,000 sheets it is usually 20 metres.

Q2. What does the sheet number 55K/16 indicate?

55 is the 4° × 4° (1:1,000,000) sheet, K is its 1° × 1° (1:250,000) subdivision, and 16 is the 15′ × 15′ sheet at a scale of 1:50,000.

Q3. Explain the numbering system of Survey of India topographical maps.

  • Series and scales.
  • Division 4° → 1° → 15′ → 7½′ with lettering and numbering.
  • A neat index diagram.
  • Open Series Maps.

Q4. Describe the methods of showing relief and the contour patterns of landforms.

  • Contours, spot heights, benchmarks, hachures, layer tints, hill shading.
  • Patterns: gentle, steep, concave, convex slopes; conical hill, plateau, valley, spur, waterfall, cliff.
  • Draw contour diagrams with cross-sections.

Q5. How is a topographical map interpreted?

  • Marginal information: sheet number, scale, contour interval, location.
  • Relief and drainage; vegetation; land use.
  • Settlements: types and patterns; transport.
  • Occupations; relation between physical and cultural features.

Exam tip

Learn the colour scheme and at least 15 conventional signs by heart; practical exams often give a toposheet extract and ask you to identify them.

Quick summary

Geographers present data through statistical diagrams and thematic maps so that patterns can be seen at a glance. Diagrams such as line graphs, bar graphs, pie diagrams and climographs show changes and proportions, while thematic maps such as dot, choropleth, isopleth and flow maps show how one theme varies over space.

Key points

  • Line graph – shows change over time (population growth, temperature); time on the X-axis, values on the Y-axis.
  • Bar graph – bars of equal width with lengths proportional to values. Types: simple, multiple (compound) – two or more bars side by side, divided (component) – one bar split into parts.
  • Pie diagram – a circle divided into sectors; each sector's angle is proportional to its share. Good for showing composition (land use, workforce).
  • Climograph / climatic graph – monthly temperature as a line and rainfall as bars on one graph.
  • Wind rose – shows the direction and frequency of winds at a place.
  • Age–sex pyramid – horizontal bars for age groups, males on the left and females on the right.
  • Dot map – each dot stands for a fixed number (e.g. 1 dot = 10,000 people); shows distribution.
  • Choropleth map – administrative areas are shaded according to a ratio or density (darker for higher values), e.g. population density by district.
  • Isopleth map – lines joining places of equal value: isotherms (temperature), isobars (pressure), isohyets (rainfall), isohalines (salinity).
  • Flow map – lines of varying thickness show the volume of movement (traffic, migration, trade).
  • Proportional circles / spheres – the radius of a circle is proportional to the square root of the value, so that its area represents the value.
  • Every diagram and map needs a title, scale or key, units and source.

Important terms

  • Data – facts and figures collected for study.
  • Thematic map – a map that shows one theme or variable.
  • Isopleth – a line of equal value on a map.
  • Choropleth – shading of areal units by class of value.
  • Class interval – range of values in each shading category.

Formulas

  • Pie diagram: angle of a sector = (value ÷ total) × 360°
  • Proportional circle: radius r ∝ √value (r = √(value ÷ π) × chosen scale)
  • Population density = population ÷ area (persons per sq km)

5 important questions

Q1. A village has 45 ha under rice, 30 ha under wheat and 25 ha under other crops. Find the angles for a pie diagram.

  1. Total = 45 + 30 + 25 = 100 ha
  2. Rice = 45 ÷ 100 × 360 = 162°
  3. Wheat = 30 ÷ 100 × 360 = 108°
  4. Others = 25 ÷ 100 × 360 = 90° (check: 162 + 108 + 90 = 360°)

Q2. Distinguish between a choropleth map and an isopleth map.

A choropleth map shades whole administrative units by class of value (e.g. district population density), while an isopleth map draws lines through places of equal value without regard to boundaries (e.g. isotherms).

Q3. Describe the types of bar graphs with examples.

  • Simple bar graph: rainfall of one station.
  • Multiple bar graph: production of two crops over years.
  • Divided bar graph: composition of workforce.
  • Rules for drawing: scale, equal width, equal gaps, key.

Q4. Explain dot, choropleth and isopleth methods of thematic mapping.

  • Dot: value of dot, size, placement; merits and limits.
  • Choropleth: classes, shading from light to dark; merits and limits.
  • Isopleth: interpolation, isotherms, isohyets; merits and limits.
  • Suitability of each for different data.

Q5. What is a climograph? How is it drawn and interpreted?

  • Data needed: monthly mean temperature and rainfall.
  • Axes: months on X; temperature on left Y (line); rainfall on right Y (bars).
  • Interpretation: hot/cold months, rainy season, type of climate (e.g. Nagpur – hot summer and monsoon rain).

Exam tip

Always check that pie angles add up to 360° and give every diagram a title, key and scale – these small things carry marks in practical papers.

Quick summary

Remote sensing is collecting information about objects or areas on the earth from a distance, without touching them, usually from satellites or aircraft. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based system to store, analyse and display spatial data. Global Positioning System (GPS) gives the exact location of any point. Together, these tools are widely used in mapping, agriculture, disaster management and planning.

Key points

  • Remote sensing (सुदूर संवेदन) uses sensors that record electromagnetic radiation (EMR) reflected or emitted by objects.
  • Every object reflects energy differently; this pattern is its spectral signature. It helps identify water, vegetation, soil and buildings.
  • Stages of remote sensing: energy source (sun) → propagation through atmosphere → interaction with the earth's surface → detection by sensor → transmission and processing of data → interpretation and use.
  • Passive remote sensing uses sunlight (e.g. optical cameras). Active remote sensing uses its own energy source (e.g. RADAR, LiDAR) and can work at night and through clouds.
  • Platforms: ground-based, airborne (aerial photography) and spaceborne (satellites).
  • Geostationary satellites stay over the same point at about 36,000 km altitude (weather and communication, e.g. INSAT). Sun-synchronous (polar) satellites pass over the same place at the same local time (earth observation, e.g. IRS).
  • India launched its first remote sensing satellite IRS-1A in 1988. ISRO's NRSC (National Remote Sensing Centre) is in Hyderabad.
  • GIS components: hardware, software, data, people and methods.
  • GIS data models: raster (grid cells/pixels, e.g. satellite images) and vector (points, lines and polygons, e.g. wells, roads, district boundaries).
  • GPS uses a constellation of satellites; a receiver needs signals from at least four satellites for a 3-D position. India's regional system is NavIC (IRNSS).

Important terms

  • Spatial data – data linked to a location on earth.
  • Attribute data – non-spatial information about a feature (e.g. population of a village).
  • Resolution – the detail an image shows: spatial, spectral, temporal and radiometric.
  • False Colour Composite (FCC) – image in which healthy vegetation appears red.
  • Overlay analysis – combining two or more map layers in GIS.
  • Buffer – a zone of fixed distance around a feature in GIS (e.g. 500 m around a river).
  • Georeferencing – assigning real-world coordinates to a map or image.

  • Applications: crop yield estimation, land use mapping, forest cover monitoring, flood and drought assessment, urban planning, groundwater prospecting, navigation, cyclone tracking.

5 important questions

Q1. Define remote sensing.

Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about objects or areas on the earth's surface from a distance, without physical contact, by recording reflected or emitted electromagnetic energy.

Q2. Distinguish between active and passive remote sensing.

Passive remote sensing records natural energy (sunlight) reflected by objects. Active remote sensing sends its own energy (like radar waves) and records what comes back, so it can work at night and through clouds.

Q3. Explain the stages of remote sensing.

  • Source of energy.
  • Passage through atmosphere (scattering, absorption).
  • Interaction with earth features (spectral signature).
  • Recording by sensor on a platform.
  • Transmission to ground station and processing.
  • Interpretation and application.

Q4. What is GIS? Explain its components and data models.

  • Definition: computer system for capturing, storing, analysing and displaying spatial data.
  • Components: hardware, software, data, people, methods.
  • Raster and vector models with examples.
  • Functions: input, storage, analysis (overlay, buffer), output (maps).

Q5. Explain the applications of remote sensing and GIS.

  • Agriculture: crop health, area and yield.
  • Forestry: forest cover change.
  • Disaster management: floods, cyclones, droughts.
  • Urban planning and transport.
  • Water resources and watershed planning.
  • Mineral exploration and environmental monitoring.

Exam tip

Draw the remote sensing process diagram (sun → atmosphere → earth → sensor → ground station). A raster vs vector table is a quick, high-scoring answer.

Quick summary

An ecosystem is a natural unit in which living organisms interact with each other and with their physical environment, linked by flows of energy and cycles of nutrients. Biodiversity is the variety of life at genetic, species and ecosystem levels. India is one of the world's megadiverse countries, and conserving its biodiversity – including the tiger forests of Vidarbha – is vital for ecological balance and human well-being.

Key points

  • The term ecosystem was introduced by A. G. Tansley in 1935.
  • Components: abiotic (sunlight, air, water, soil, temperature) and biotic – producers (green plants), consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores) and decomposers (bacteria, fungi).
  • Energy enters through photosynthesis and flows one way through trophic levels. Only about 10% of energy passes from one level to the next (Lindeman's ten per cent law), so food chains are short.
  • Food chain – a single path of feeding (grass → deer → tiger); food web – many interlinked food chains.
  • Ecological pyramids of number, biomass and energy; the pyramid of energy is always upright.
  • Nutrients move in biogeochemical cycles – water, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen.
  • Types of ecosystems: terrestrial (forest, grassland, desert, mountain) and aquatic (freshwater, marine, estuarine, wetlands).
  • Biodiversity has three levels: genetic, species and ecosystem diversity.
  • India has about 2.4% of the world's land but about 7–8% of recorded species, and is one of the 17 megadiverse countries.
  • Biodiversity hotspots (concept by Norman Myers, 1988): areas very rich in endemic species and under threat. India has parts of four: Himalaya, Indo-Burma, Western Ghats–Sri Lanka, Sundaland (Nicobar Islands).
  • Threats: habitat loss, invasive species, pollution, over-exploitation (poaching, overfishing), climate change.
  • In-situ conservation (in natural habitat): national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves (18 in India), tiger reserves (Project Tiger, 1973), sacred groves. Ex-situ conservation: zoos, botanical gardens, seed and gene banks.
  • Vidarbha's protected areas: Tadoba-Andhari (Chandrapur – Maharashtra's oldest national park), Pench (Nagpur), Navegaon-Nagzira (Bhandara–Gondia) and Melghat (Amravati – among India's first tiger reserves).
  • Laws and agreements: Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, Biological Diversity Act 2002, Convention on Biological Diversity (Rio, 1992).

Important terms

  • Ecosystem (परिसंस्था) – a community of organisms and its physical environment working as a unit.
  • Trophic level – the feeding level of an organism in a food chain.
  • Biodiversity (जैवविविधता) – variety of all forms of life.
  • Endemic species – a species found only in one particular region.
  • Hotspot – a region of high endemic biodiversity facing serious threat.
  • Biosphere reserve – a protected area with a core, buffer and transition zone for conservation with people's participation.

Key facts

Conservation typeExamples

Tiger reserveMelghat, Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Navegaon-Nagzira
Biosphere reserveNilgiri (first, 1986), Sundarbans, Nanda Devi
Ex-situZoos, botanical gardens, seed banks

5 important questions

Q1. What is the ten per cent law of energy flow?

Only about 10% of the energy at one trophic level is passed on to the next level; the rest is lost mainly as heat during life processes.

Q2. Name the four biodiversity hotspots found in India.

Himalaya, Indo-Burma, Western Ghats–Sri Lanka and Sundaland (Nicobar Islands).

Q3. Explain the structure and functioning of an ecosystem.

  • Definition (Tansley).

  • Importance: food, medicine, ecological balance, economy, culture.
  • India as a megadiverse country; hotspots.

Q5. Discuss the threats to biodiversity and methods of conservation, with examples from Maharashtra.

  • Threats: habitat loss, poaching, pollution, invasive species, climate change, human–wildlife conflict (e.g. around Tadoba).
  • In-situ and ex-situ methods.
  • Vidarbha's tiger reserves; Project Tiger; laws and community participation.

Exam tip

Draw a food-chain or energy-pyramid diagram and add a Vidarbha protected area – these two touches lift any ecosystem answer.

Environment and Disaster Management

Quick summary

The environment is the sum of all living and non-living things around us. Human activities cause pollution, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and climate change. A disaster is a sudden event that causes widespread loss of life and property beyond the coping capacity of a community. Disaster management involves preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation, guided in India by the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Key points

  • Environment (पर्यावरण) has abiotic (air, water, soil, sunlight) and biotic (plants, animals, microorganisms) components.
  • An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their physical environment. The term was introduced by A.G. Tansley (1935).
  • Environmental problems: air, water, soil and noise pollution; deforestation; desertification; loss of biodiversity; global warming and climate change; ozone depletion; waste.
  • Hazard is a potential threat; it becomes a disaster when it causes heavy loss due to people's vulnerability.
  • Natural disasters: earthquakes, floods, droughts, cyclones, landslides, tsunamis.
  • Human-made disasters: industrial accidents (e.g. Bhopal gas tragedy, December 1984), fires, stampedes, nuclear accidents.

Regional Planning and Development

Quick summary

Regional planning is the process of planning the development of a particular region so that its resources are used well and differences between regions are reduced. It deals with the type of regions, the causes of regional imbalance, theories such as the growth pole and core–periphery models, and planning programmes in India and Maharashtra, including Vidarbha.

Key points

  • A region is an area with some unity. Types: formal (homogeneous) region – uniform in a feature such as climate or crop; functional (nodal) region – linked to a centre, e.g. the hinterland of a city; planning region – an area chosen for planning and administration.
  • Regional imbalance means large differences in income, infrastructure and services between regions. Causes: uneven natural resources, history, location, unequal investment, poor infrastructure and governance.
  • Growth pole theory (François Perroux, 1955): development starts at certain dynamic centres (propulsive industries) and spreads from them.
  • Growth centre approach is the Indian application of this idea at different levels – growth centres, growth points and service centres.
  • Cumulative causation (Gunnar Myrdal, 1957): rich regions attract capital and labour (backwash effect) and grow richer; development can also spread outward (spread effect).
  • Core–periphery model (John Friedmann, 1966): a developed core region dominates a less developed periphery.
  • Planning in India: Five-Year Plans (1951–2017); the Planning Commission was replaced by NITI Aayog on 1 January 2015.
  • Area development programmes: Drought Prone Areas Programme (1973), Command Area Development (1974), Tribal Sub-Plan (1974), Desert Development Programme, Hill Area Development, Aspirational Districts Programme (2018; Gadchiroli is one).
  • Maharashtra: the Dandekar Committee (1984) studied regional imbalance and the backlog of Vidarbha and Marathwada; Statutory Development Boards for Vidarbha, Marathwada and the rest of Maharashtra were set up in 1994 under Article 371(2); the Kelkar Committee (2013) reviewed balanced development.
  • Planning tools today: multi-level planning, district plans, decentralised planning through Panchayati Raj (73rd and 74th Amendments, 1992), and GIS-based planning.

Important terms

  • Region (प्रदेश) – an area marked by certain common features or links.
  • Regional planning – planning for the balanced development of a region.
  • Growth pole – a dynamic centre from which development spreads.
  • Backwash effect – flow of resources from poor to rich regions.
  • Backlog – the shortfall of a region in development compared with others.
  • Multi-level planning – planning at national, state, district and block levels.

Key facts

Development Boards (Maharashtra)1994, Art. 371(2)Funds for Vidarbha, Marathwada, rest of Maharashtra

5 important questions

Q1. Distinguish between a formal region and a functional region.

A formal region is uniform in one or more features (e.g. the black-soil cotton region); a functional region is held together by links to a central place (e.g. the area served by Nagpur city).

Q2. What is the backwash effect?

In Myrdal's theory, the movement of capital, skilled labour and resources from backward regions to developed regions, which increases regional inequality.

Q3. Explain the growth pole theory and its application in India.

  • Perroux's idea of propulsive industries and poles.
  • Spread through linkages.
  • Indian growth centre approach; examples (industrial townships, MIDC areas, Butibori near Nagpur).
  • Merits and criticism.

Q4. Discuss the causes of regional imbalance in India and measures to reduce it.

  • Physical, historical, economic and political causes.
  • Measures: special area programmes, incentives for backward areas, infrastructure, Aspirational Districts, Finance Commission transfers.
  • Example: Vidarbha's irrigation and industrial backlog.

Q5. Describe the efforts for balanced regional development in Maharashtra.

  • Regions of Maharashtra and their differences.
  • Dandekar Committee (1984), Development Boards (1994), Kelkar Committee (2013).
  • Projects for Vidarbha: Gosikhurd, MIHAN, Samruddhi Mahamarg.
  • Remaining challenges and suggestions.

Exam tip

Remember the three theorists with years (Perroux 1955, Myrdal 1957, Friedmann 1966) and always end with a Vidarbha example – it fits this topic perfectly.

Quick summary

Maharashtra is a large state in western and central India, formed on 1 May 1960. It has three main physical divisions: the Konkan coastal strip, the Sahyadri (Western Ghats) and the Deccan Plateau. Its climate is tropical monsoon, with heavy rain on the coast and less in the interior. Maharashtra is a leader in industry, services and several crops, with Mumbai as its capital and India's financial centre.

Key points

  • Formation: Maharashtra was formed on 1 May 1960 (Maharashtra Day) after the Samyukta Maharashtra movement.
  • It is the third largest state by area and was the second most populous state in the 2011 Census.
  • Capital: Mumbai; second (winter) capital: Nagpur, where the winter session of the legislature is held.
  • Administrative divisions: Konkan, Pune, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), Amravati and Nagpur.
  • Regions: Konkan, Western Maharashtra (Desh), Khandesh (north), Marathwada and Vidarbha. Bhandara lies in eastern Vidarbha (Nagpur division).
  • Physiography: (1) Konkan – narrow coastal plain with creeks and beaches; (2) Sahyadri – Western Ghats, with Kalsubai (about 1,646 m) as the highest peak; (3) Deccan Plateau – made of basalt lava flows, sloping gently towards the east.
  • The Satpuda (Satpura) range lies in the north; hill ranges on the plateau include Ajanta–Satmala, Harishchandra–Balaghat and Mahadev hills.
  • Rivers: west-flowing Konkan rivers are short and fast (Vaitarna, Ulhas, Savitri, Vashishti); east-flowing rivers of the plateau are long — Godavari (rises at Trimbakeshwar, Nashik), Krishna (rises at Mahabaleshwar), Bhima; Tapi flows west through Khandesh; Wainganga, a tributary of the Godavari system, flows through Bhandara and Gondia.
  • Climate: tropical monsoon; Konkan and Sahyadri get heavy rain; the leeward Deccan (parts of Marathwada, Solapur, Ahilyanagar) is a rain-shadow, drought-prone region; Vidarbha has very hot summers (Chandrapur, Brahmapuri, Nagpur).
  • Soils: black (regur) on the plateau, laterite in Konkan and Sahyadri, red and yellow soils in east Vidarbha.

Important terms

  • Desh – the plateau area of western Maharashtra east of the Sahyadri.
  • Ghats – steep slopes and passes of the Sahyadri (Thal ghat, Bor ghat, Amba ghat).
  • Maval – hilly western belt along the Sahyadri with heavy rain.
  • Lonar Lake – a crater lake in Buldhana district formed by a meteorite impact in basalt rock.
  • Tank irrigation – Bhandara and Gondia districts are known as the "district of lakes/tanks", used for rice cultivation.

5 important questions

Q1. Name the physiographic divisions of Maharashtra.

Konkan coastal plain, Sahyadri (Western Ghats) and the Deccan Plateau, with the Satpuda range in the north.

Q2. Why is Marathwada drought-prone?

Because it lies in the rain-shadow of the Sahyadri; the south-west monsoon winds lose most of their moisture on the windward Konkan side, so Marathwada gets low and uncertain rainfall.

Q3. Describe the drainage system of Maharashtra.

  • West-flowing Konkan rivers: short, swift, estuaries.
  • East-flowing plateau rivers: Godavari, Krishna, Bhima, long and gentle.
  • Tapi–Purna: west-flowing in Khandesh.
  • Wainganga, Wardha, Penganga in Vidarbha (Godavari system).
  • Dams and irrigation on these rivers.

Q4. Explain the climate of Maharashtra.

  • Tropical monsoon type.
  • Summer: hot, especially in Vidarbha.
  • Rainy season: June–September; heavy on Konkan, Sahyadri.
  • Rain-shadow on the Deccan; moderate rain in east Vidarbha from Bay of Bengal branch.
  • Winter: pleasant, dry.
  • Effects on agriculture.

Q5. Describe agriculture and industries in Maharashtra.

  • Crops: sugarcane (west), cotton (Vidarbha, Marathwada), rice (Konkan, Bhandara–Gondia), fruits (Nashik grapes, Nagpur oranges, Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes).
  • Cooperative sugar factories.
  • Industries: textiles, automobiles, engineering, chemicals, IT.
  • MIDC industrial estates; Mumbai as financial capital.
