Field Visit

Quick summary

A field visit is a planned trip to see geographical features and human activities first-hand. This chapter follows a sample field visit from Naldurg (Osmanabad district) to Alibag (Raigad district) and shows how relief, soil, rainfall, vegetation, crops, houses and occupations change from the Deccan plateau to the Konkan coast. It also teaches how to plan a visit and write a report.

Key points

  • A field visit helps us apply geographical knowledge and learn by observing, not just reading.
  • Plan in advance: route, map, timetable, permissions, questionnaire, and items like I-card, notebook, pen, map, camera, binoculars, cap, water bottle and first-aid kit.
  • Observe and record: relief, water bodies, vegetation, soil, agriculture, settlements and settlement patterns.
  • Near Naldurg (low rainfall): undulating land, dry deciduous and semi-arid thorny vegetation (bor, babool), pulses like moong and urad, mud-and-wood houses (dhabyachi ghare), linear settlements along roads.
  • Between Solapur and Pune: sugarcane because of irrigation; the Ujani dam on the river Bhima supplies drinking water and is used for irrigation, power and fishing.
  • Sinhagad (Western Ghats off-shoots): rugged hills, basalt (igneous rock formed from volcanic lava), more rainfall, paddy fields, trees like anjan, banyan and peepal.
  • Western Ghats (Sahyadris) have a gentle slope to the east and a steep slope to the west, with cliffs and waterfalls; the Bhor (Khandala) ghat leads to the coastal plain.
  • Konkan coast: heavy rainfall, high humidity, rice, horticulture (coconut, betelnut, jackfruit, banana, spices), fishing and tourism.
  • Change in vegetation is an indicator of change in rainfall.
  • Forts are of different types: land fort (Naldurg), hill fort (Sinhagad) and sea fort (Kolaba fort, built on a wave-cut platform).

Important terms

  • Linear settlement – houses built in a line along a road, river or canal.
  • Devrai – a sacred grove of trees protected by local people.
  • Vanrai – a woodland.
  • Primary occupations – activities that directly use natural resources, e.g. fishing, agriculture.
  • Questionnaire – a list of questions prepared to collect information during the visit.

Key facts

  • Main rock of the Maharashtra plateau: basalt, formed from lava flows.
  • Ulhas is a major west-flowing river that rises in this part of the Sahyadris.
  • Talathi office: a place to collect data on crops, soils, land revenue, irrigation and watershed programmes.
  • A field visit report should include aim, route, date, observations, maps, photos, information collected and conclusion.

5 important questions

Q1. Outline the importance of a field visit.

It gives first-hand experience of geographical features and human activities. It develops skills like observation, recording, comparison and drawing conclusions, and connects classroom learning with the real world.

Q2. What items will you take with you on a field visit?

I-card, notebook, pen, pencil, map, questionnaire, camera, binoculars, compass, cap, water bottle, first-aid kit and a bag for litter.

Q3. How will you manage litter during a field visit?

Carry a separate bag for waste, avoid plastic, use reusable bottles and boxes, never throw waste on the road, in water bodies or at historical places, and dispose of it in dustbins.

Q4. Prepare a questionnaire for a field visit to a factory.

Name and location of the factory; raw materials and their sources; products; number of workers; source of power and water; how waste is treated; how products are transported and marketed; problems faced.

Q5. How will you write a report on a field visit?

Write the aim, place, date and route; note observations about relief, soil, vegetation, crops, settlements and occupations; add maps, sketches and photos; summarise the information collected; and write conclusions.

Exam tip

Questions are general, not about the Naldurg–Alibag sample. Practise writing a questionnaire and a short report in points.

Physiography and Drainage

Quick summary

Physiography means the physical features (relief) of a land, and drainage means its river systems. This chapter compares India and Brazil: India has the young Himalayas, the North Indian Plains, the old Peninsular plateau, coastal plains and islands, while Brazil is mostly highlands and plateaus with the vast Amazon plain. It also compares the Ganga and Amazon river systems.

Key points

  • India's five physiographic divisions: the Himalayas, the North Indian Plains, the Peninsula, the Coastal Plains and the Island groups.
  • The Himalayas are young fold mountains with parallel ranges: Siwaliks (southernmost and youngest), Lesser Himalayas, Greater Himalayas (Himadri) and Trans Himalayas.
  • North Indian Plains: Ganga plains east of the Aravalis (slope eastward) and Punjab plains to the west (slope westward); the Thar Desert (Marusthali) lies in the west.
  • The Ganga–Brahmaputra delta (Sunderbans) is considered the world's largest delta.
  • The Aravalis are the oldest fold mountains of the Peninsula. The Western Ghats are a major water divide.
  • India's coastline is about 7500 km. The west coast is rocky and narrow with estuaries; the east coast is wide with deltas.
  • Lakshadweep islands are mostly atolls (coral); Andaman islands are mostly volcanic; Barren Island has India's only active volcano.
  • Brazil's divisions: the Highlands, the Great Escarpment, the Plains, the Coastal region and the Island groups.
  • The Brazilian Highlands (Brazilian Shield/Plateau) cover most of Brazil. The highest peak, Pico da Neblina (3014 m), is on the Brazil–Venezuela border.
  • The Great Escarpment blocks the South-East Trade winds, creating a rain-shadow area in the north-east called the "Drought Quadrilateral".
  • Pantanal, in the south-west, is one of the largest wetlands in the world.
  • The Amazon carries a huge discharge (about 2 lakh m³/s), washes away its sediments, and so forms no delta at its mouth.
  • Himalayan rivers are perennial (glacier-fed); Peninsular rivers are rain-fed and seasonal.

Important terms

  • Physiography – the physical features of the land surface.
  • Drainage – the system of rivers in a region.
  • Water divide – high land that separates two river basins.
  • Escarpment – a long, steep slope at the edge of a plateau.
  • Atoll – a ring-shaped coral island.
  • Kayals – backwaters near river mouths in Kerala.

Key facts

River mouthLarge delta (Sunderbans)No delta, islands at mouth
CoastlineAbout 7500 kmAbout 7400 km
  • Tapi and Narmada flow west through rift valleys into the Gulf of Khambhat.
  • Godavari is India's second largest river system by catchment area; Bhima and Tungabhadra are tributaries of the Krishna.
  • Brazil's three major drainage systems: the Amazon basin, the Paraguay–Parana system in the south-west, and the Sao Francisco in the eastern highlands (plus short coastal rivers).

5 important questions

Q1. Give geographical reason: There are no deltas at the mouth of the Amazon.

The Amazon has a huge discharge (about 2 lakh m³/s). This strong flow washes the sediments far into the Atlantic Ocean, so they are not deposited at the mouth and no delta forms.

Q2. Why is the north-eastern part of the Brazilian Highlands a drought-prone area?

The Great Escarpment blocks the moisture-laden South-East Trade winds. The area behind it lies in the rain shadow and gets very little rain. It is called the Drought Quadrilateral.

Q3. Compare the west and east coasts of India.

The west coast borders the Arabian Sea, is rocky and narrow, and its short swift rivers form estuaries. The east coast borders the Bay of Bengal, is wider, formed by river deposition, and has deltas.

Q4. Why are the Western Ghats called a water divide?

Rivers on their western slopes flow west to the Arabian Sea, while rivers like the Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri rise on their eastern slopes and flow east to the Bay of Bengal. So the Ghats divide the two drainage systems.

Q5. Write a note on the Himalayas.

Young fold mountains extending from the Pamir Knot eastward; in India from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh. They have parallel ranges — Siwaliks, Lesser Himalayas, Greater Himalayas and Trans Himalayas — and are divided into Western, Central and Eastern Himalayas.

Climate

Quick summary

This chapter compares the climates of Brazil and India. Brazil, with its huge latitudinal extent, is mostly tropical, hot and humid, and gets rain from the South-East and North-East Trade winds. India has a monsoon type of climate, controlled by the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean, with four seasons.

Key points

  • Brazil: the Equator passes through its north, so most of the country is in the tropical zone; the south, near the Tropic of Capricorn, has a temperate climate.
  • Average temperature in the Amazon valley is 25°–28°C. The Highlands are cooler; the coast is mild and humid.
  • The Amazon valley gets about 2000 mm of rainfall; the north-eastern coast gets 1000–1200 mm.
  • The Great Escarpment blocks winds from the sea and causes orographic rain on the coast. Beyond it lies a rain-shadow region, the "Drought Quadrilateral".
  • Tropical cyclones rarely hit Brazil's coast because the trade-wind convergence zone there is weak and winds move vertically.
  • Brazil rarely gets snow; snowfall in the south (when polar air masses arrive) was recorded in 1879, 1957 and 1985.
  • India: the Tropic of Cancer passes through the middle, so India is tropical and temperatures are high most of the year; they increase towards the south.
  • The Himalayas block the very cold winds from the north and stop the monsoon winds, causing rain in North India.
  • In summer, low pressure forms over the Punjab plains and the Thar desert; moist winds from the Indian Ocean blow in — the South-West Monsoon.
  • Winds blow parallel to the Aravalis, so Gujarat and Rajasthan get little rain.
  • Retreating (North-East) monsoon winds give rain to some parts of the Peninsula, especially Tamil Nadu.
  • India often faces erratic rainfall, droughts, cyclones and floods.

Important terms

  • Monsoon – seasonal winds that reverse direction between summer and winter.
  • Orographic rainfall – rain caused when moist winds rise over mountains.
  • Rain-shadow region – the dry area on the leeward side of mountains.
  • Range of temperature – difference between maximum and minimum temperature.
  • Equable climate – small range of temperature (e.g. coastal places); extreme climate – large range (e.g. Delhi).

Key facts

  • Four seasons of India (IMD): hot weather season, monsoon season, retreating monsoon season, cold weather season.
  • Seasons in Brazil are opposite to India's because Brazil is mostly in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Mawsynram (11,872 mm) and Cherrapunji (11,777 mm) in Meghalaya are the wettest places in the world.
  • Jaisalmer gets less than 120 mm of rain a year — the driest part of India.
  • Ganganagar (Rajasthan) reaches 50°C in June; Kargil can drop to −48°C in winter.

5 important questions

Q1. Give geographical reason: The north-eastern part of the Brazilian Highlands receives very little rainfall.

The Great Escarpment stops the moist winds from the sea, so the coast gets orographic rain. The area beyond the highlands lies in the rain shadow and receives little rain. It is called the Drought Quadrilateral.

Q2. Give geographical reason: Tropical cyclones occur rarely in Brazil.

Near the Equator on Brazil's coast, temperature differences are negligible, winds move vertically and the convergence zone of the trade winds is weak. So cyclones do not form easily.

Q3. Right or wrong? India and Brazil have the same seasons at the same time.

Wrong. India is in the Northern Hemisphere and Brazil is mainly in the Southern Hemisphere, so their seasons are opposite. When it is summer in India, it is winter in Brazil.

Q4. Explain the importance of the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean for India's climate.

The Himalayas block the cold northern winds and stop the monsoon winds, causing heavy rain in North India. The Indian Ocean is the source of the moist monsoon winds that bring most of India's rainfall.

Q5. Give geographical reason: India receives precipitation from the North-East Monsoon winds too.

When the monsoon winds retreat from the Himalayas, they blow from the north-east towards the Indian Ocean. Crossing the Bay of Bengal, they pick up moisture and give rain to parts of the Peninsula, especially Tamil Nadu.

Natural Vegetation and Wildlife

Quick summary

Natural vegetation and wildlife depend mainly on rainfall, temperature and relief. This chapter compares Brazil and India: Brazil has the world's largest variety of plant species and the dense Amazon rainforests, while India has evergreen, deciduous, thorny, coastal and Himalayan forests. Both countries are rich in wildlife but face forest loss and threats to species.

Key points

  • In Brazil, rainfall falls throughout the year near the Equator, so evergreen forests grow there. Away from the Equator, rainfall decreases and grasses, shrubs and thorny plants replace forests.
  • Brazil has the largest number of plant species in the world. Trees include Pau Brasil, rubber, mahogany and rosewood, and many orchids.
  • The Amazon rainforests release a large amount of oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide — they are called the "lungs of the world".
  • Brazil's wildlife is the most diverse in the world: anacondas in the Pantanal, golden lion tamarin, monkeys, pumas, crocodiles, alligators, pink dolphins and piranhas in rivers, condors, macaws, parrots and flamingoes, and millions of insect varieties.
  • In Brazil, illegal smuggling of wild animals, slash-and-burn farming (roca), deforestation and pollution are degrading the environment.
  • India's forest types by rainfall: evergreen (more than 2000 mm), deciduous (1000–2000 mm), thorny and shrub type (less than 500 mm), coastal (mangrove), and Himalayan forests.
  • Deciduous forests cover most of India because most of India gets 1000–2000 mm of seasonal rainfall. Trees shed leaves in the dry season to save water.
  • Himalayan forests change with altitude: mixed forests with sal at the foothills, coniferous trees (pine, deodar, fir) at medium heights, and seasonally flowering plants at higher altitudes.
  • India is a mega-diverse country. It is the only country in the world where both tigers and lions are found. The tiger is India's national animal.
  • Poaching, pollution and deforestation threaten Indian wildlife; the cheetah became extinct. India has set up national parks, sanctuaries and biosphere reserves.

Important terms

  • Evergreen forest – forest that stays green all year because of year-round rain.
  • Deciduous forest – forest whose trees shed leaves in the dry season.
  • Mangroves – salt-tolerant coastal forests in swamps and estuaries (Sunderbans in India).
  • Roca – shifting (slash-and-burn) agriculture in Brazil.
  • Endemic species – species found only in a particular region.

Key facts

Forest typeExample trees
EvergreenMahogany, rosewood, rubber (India); Pau Brasil, orchids (Brazil)
DeciduousTeak, bamboo, banyan, peepal
Thorny and bushCatechu, acacia, khejadi, cactus
CoastalSundari (mangroves)
HimalayanPine, deodar, fir, sal
  • A 2016 survey found about 5831 sq km of Brazil's forest land had degraded that year.
  • Indian animals: one-horned rhino (Assam), wild ass and camel (arid lands), snow leopard and yak (Himalayas), gharial and Olive Ridley turtles (coasts and rivers).

5 important questions

Q1. Give geographical reason: The northern part of Brazil is covered by dense forests.

The Equator passes through northern Brazil, so it gets high temperature and rain throughout the year (about 2000 mm). These conditions support dense evergreen forests.

Q2. Give geographical reason: Vegetation is scarce at high altitudes of the Himalayas.

At high altitudes temperatures are very low and the ground stays snow-covered for most of the year, so few plants can grow.

Q3. Why does the deciduous type of vegetation occupy most of India?

Most of India gets 1000–2000 mm of rainfall, but only in one season. In the long dry season trees shed their leaves to reduce water loss. So deciduous forests are most widespread.

Q4. What environmental issues do Brazil and India face?

Deforestation, illegal hunting and smuggling of animals, slash-and-burn farming, pollution and the growing extinction of species.

Q5. Give geographical reason: A wide variety of insects is found in Brazil.

Brazil has hot, humid equatorial climate and dense evergreen forests with a huge variety of plants. This provides food and shelter for millions of insect varieties.

Population

Quick summary

Population is an important resource of a country, and its quality matters for economic and social progress. This chapter compares the population of India and Brazil — size, distribution, density, sex ratio, age structure, growth rate, life expectancy and literacy — using maps and graphs.

Key points

  • India's population was about 121 crore (Census 2011); it is the second most populous country. It has 2.41% of the world's land but 17.5% of the world's population.
  • India's average population density is 382 persons per sq km (2011).
  • India's population is unevenly distributed: dense in the northern plains and big cities (Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai) due to fertile flat land, water, farming, industry and trade; sparse in mountains, deserts and dense forests.
  • Brazil's population was about 19 crore (Census 2010); it is 5th in the world in population and in area. It has 5.6% of the world's land and 2.78% of its population, so its density is only about 23 persons per sq km.
  • Most Brazilians live in the eastern and south-eastern coastal areas, where agriculture, industries and cities have grown. The Amazon basin interior is very sparsely populated due to heavy rain, dense forests, unfavourable climate and inaccessibility.
  • Sex ratio = number of females per 1000 males. Brazil's sex ratio has been above 1000 for decades; in India men outnumber women, though the ratio has risen slightly after 1991.
  • Brazil's population is slowly getting older; India has a higher share of children and youth, so a larger working population.
  • India's population grew by 18.2 crore from 2001 to 2011. Growth rate was high till 1971; it is now declining but the population is still growing. Brazil's growth rate has fallen a lot.
  • Life expectancy in India is about 68 years; Brazil's is higher. Rising life expectancy is a sign of development (better health care, medicine and nutrition).
  • Brazil's literacy rate is higher than India's.

Important terms

  • Population density – number of people per sq km of area.
  • Sex ratio – number of females per 1000 males.
  • Population pyramid – graph showing the age and sex structure of a population.
  • Life expectancy – average number of years a newborn is expected to live.
  • Census – official counting of the population.

  • The first census in both countries was in 1872. Brazil's census is done by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), every ten years.

5 important questions

Q1. Give geographical reason: The density of population is sparse in the Amazon basin.

The Amazon basin has hot, humid, unfavourable climate, heavy rainfall, dense forests and poor accessibility. These are barriers to settlements, so very few people live there.

Q2. Give geographical reason: Population density is high in the Ganga plains.

The Ganga plains have flat, fertile land and plenty of water, so farming flourished for centuries. Industries, trade and transport also developed, attracting more people.

Q3. Give geographical reason: Brazil's population density is very low.

Brazil has a very large area (5.6% of the world's land) but only 2.78% of the world's population. Large parts like the Amazon basin and the central-west are thinly populated. So the average density is only about 23 per sq km.

Q4. Right or wrong? The life expectancy of Indians is decreasing.

Wrong. India's life expectancy has been increasing (it is now about 68 years) because of better health facilities, medical progress and access to nutritious food.

Q5. Why is population an important resource?

People use natural resources and produce goods and services. An educated, healthy and skilled population drives economic and social development of a country.

Exam tip

Read graphs carefully: a falling growth-rate line does not mean population is falling — it means it is growing more slowly.

Human Settlements

Quick summary

A human settlement is a place where people live and carry out their activities. This chapter compares settlement patterns in India and Brazil — nucleated and dispersed — and the reasons behind them. It also compares urbanisation: India is still less urbanised, while Brazil is one of the most urbanised developing countries.

Key points

  • Settlement patterns depend on climate, availability of water, slope of land and level of development.
  • In India, nucleated (compact) settlements are found in cultivated areas like the Narmada valley plateau, the paddy lands of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and the Vindhyan plateau.
  • Dispersed settlements in India are found in tribal areas of central India, eastern and southern Rajasthan, Himalayan slopes and uneven, dissected land.
  • In Brazil, early settlements were made by European settlers on the coast. Coastal areas are now densely settled because of good water supply and many natural resources.
  • Sao Paulo is a nucleated settlement: rich soil good for coffee, nearby minerals like iron ore, steady energy supply and good transport.
  • The north-eastern highlands of Brazil suffer extreme droughts, so settlements are sparse.
  • Settlements are sparse in central Brazil and the Amazon basin because of dense equatorial forests, unhealthy climate, limits on using natural resources and poor transport.
  • Urbanisation = percentage of urban population in the total population.
  • India's urbanisation in 2011 was 31.16%, low compared to developed countries, and has grown slowly. The south is more urbanised than the north.
  • Goa is the most urbanised state (62%); Delhi is more than 80% urban. Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Assam and Odisha have less than 20% urban population.
  • About 86% of Brazil's people live in urban areas. Urbanisation is high in the South and South-east, with Sao Paulo as a big metropolis; it is low in the Amazon basin and highlands (Manaus is an exception).
  • Brazil's "Go West" policy aims to reduce pressure on crowded coastal areas and reduce regional imbalance.

Important terms

  • Nucleated settlement – houses built close together in a compact group.
  • Dispersed settlement – houses scattered far apart.
  • Linear settlement – houses along a road, river or canal.
  • Urbanisation – growth in the share of people living in towns and cities.
  • Choropleth map – map showing data by shades of colour for different areas.

Key facts

YearBrazil urban population (%)
196047.1
198066
200081.5
201084.6
  • Ancient Indian cities: Indraprastha (Delhi), Mithila, Varanasi, Harappa, Mohenjodaro, Ujjain and Pratishthan (Paithan) — India has a long tradition of urbanisation.
  • Manaus lies at the confluence of the Negro and the Amazon.

5 important questions

Q1. Give geographical reason: Availability of water is a major factor affecting settlements.

Water is needed for drinking, farming, industries and daily use. So people have always settled near rivers, lakes and other water sources, and settlements become dense where water is plentiful.

Q2. Give geographical reason: In Brazil, most of the population is found in the eastern coastal areas.

The coast has good water supply, many natural resources, fertile soil, minerals, energy and good transport. Early European settlers also settled here. The interior has dense forests, unhealthy climate and poor transport.

Q3. Write a comparative note on urbanisation in Brazil and India.

Brazil is highly urbanised (about 86% urban) and urbanised rapidly after 1960, mainly in the South-east. India's urbanisation is low (31.16% in 2011) and slow, higher in the south and in states like Goa, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Q4. Differentiate between settlements in the Ganga basin and the Amazon basin.

The Ganga basin has flat fertile land, water and good transport, so settlements are dense and nucleated. The Amazon basin has dense forests, heavy rain and poor transport, so settlements are sparse and scattered along rivers.

Q5. Where are dispersed settlements found in India and why?

In hilly areas, Himalayan slopes, tribal regions of central India and uneven land of Rajasthan, because flat land, water and farmland are limited and scattered.

Exam tip

For "tick the correct option" questions remember: dispersed settlements — hilly areas; nucleated in the Narmada valley — cultivable land.

Economy and Occupations

Quick summary

This chapter compares the economies of India and Brazil. Both are developing, mixed economies. It looks at national and per capita income, the share of primary, secondary and tertiary activities, and the main occupations — agriculture, mining, fishing and industries — as well as trade in both countries.

Key points

  • Economic activities are primary (agriculture, fishing, mining), secondary (manufacturing, construction) and tertiary (services like banking, transport, education).
  • India and Brazil are developing countries with mixed economies (both public and private sectors). The USA is a developed country with much higher per capita income.
  • India has a higher national income than Brazil, but Brazil has a higher per capita income because India's population is much larger.
  • In India a larger share of people works in the primary sector; in Brazil the tertiary sector employs most people and contributes most to GDP.
  • Brazil: rice and maize are main cereals; coffee, cocoa, rubber, soyabean and sugarcane are major commercial crops. Brazil is the largest exporter of coffee and soyabean. Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo grow most coffee.
  • Brazil's eastern part is rich in iron ore, manganese, nickel, copper, bauxite and diamonds; mining is limited in the interior due to dense forests and inaccessibility.
  • The warm Brazil current meets the cold Falkland current off south-east Brazil, making it a rich fishing ground. Amazon fish resources are little used.
  • Brazil's industries (iron and steel, automobiles, petroleum, chemicals, cement, food processing, textiles) are concentrated in the south and south-east.
  • India: about 60% of land is under cultivation; agriculture is mainly subsistence type. Major crops: rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, millets; plantations of tea, coffee, rubber; cash crops sugarcane, cotton, jute.
  • India's Chhota Nagpur plateau is a storehouse of minerals. Oil comes from Digboi (Assam), Mumbai High, Kalol and Koyali (Gujarat).
  • Marine fishing gives about 40% and inland fishing about 60% of India's fish production.
  • Agro-based industries (cotton, jute, sugar) are located near raw materials; heavy metallurgical industries are concentrated in the north-eastern Peninsula.

Important terms

  • Mixed economy – economy with both public (government) and private sectors.
  • Per capita income – national income divided by population.
  • GDP – total value of goods and services produced in a country in a year.
  • Balance of trade – difference between the value of exports and imports.
  • BRICS – group of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Key facts

PointIndiaBrazil
Main exportsTea, spices, coffee, leather goods, iron ore, textilesIron ore, coffee, cocoa, cotton, sugar, tobacco, oranges
Main importsPetroleum, machines, gold, precious stones, medicinesMachinery, chemicals, fertilisers, wheat, mineral oil
Balance of trade (2009–2013)Unfavourable (imports more)Favourable (exports more)
  • Currencies: Indian Rupee (₹), Brazilian Real (R$).

5 important questions

Q1. Give reason: India's national income is higher than Brazil's, but its per capita income is lower.

Per capita income = national income ÷ population. India's population is many times larger than Brazil's, so the income per person is lower even though the total income is higher.

Q2. Give reason: The south-eastern coast of Brazil is a good fishing ground.

The warm Brazil current meets the cold Falkland current here, which helps plankton (fish food) grow. Large vessels are also used, so swordfish, shrimp, lobsters and sardines are caught.

Q3. Give reason: Mining has not developed in the interior of Brazil.

Dense forests, inaccessibility and lack of knowledge about the mineral reserves limit mining in the interior.

Q4. Can Brazil be called an agrarian economy like India?

No. In India a large share of people depend on agriculture. In Brazil the tertiary sector contributes most to GDP and employs most people, and mining and manufacturing are also strong. So Brazil is not mainly agrarian.

Q5. What is balance of trade? What type does each country have?

It is the difference between exports and imports. If exports are more, it is favourable; if imports are more, it is unfavourable. Brazil's balance of trade was favourable and India's was unfavourable in 2009–2013.

Exam tip

Practise reading pie charts and the export–import table; questions often ask "which country" or "which sector" based on them.

Tourism, Transport and Communication

Quick summary

Tourism, transport and communication are tertiary activities that drive a country's progress. This chapter compares India and Brazil: their tourism, means of transport (roads, railways, waterways, airways), time zones, and communication systems including telecom and space programmes.

Key points

  • Brazil attracts tourists with white sand beaches, islands, the Amazon forests, birds and animals, the new capital Brasilia, and cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Ecotourism is growing fast because its natural resources are sensitive.
  • India gets more international tourists than Brazil (2015), and the number has risen faster after 2010. Tourists come for heritage, adventure, culture, health and business.
  • Tourism's share in GDP is smaller in India than in Brazil because India's GDP and population are much larger.
  • Brazil: roadways are the most common means of transport, but the road network is dense mainly in the east; the Amazon forests and swamps limit roads.
  • The Amazon is a commercial waterway — boats ply from Iquitos (Peru) to its mouth, about 3700 km. The Parana is another important waterway.
  • Railways are poorly developed in Brazil, and airways contribute little.
  • India has a denser transport network: about 85% of passengers and 70% of freight travel by road. The railway network is densest in the North Indian Plains.
  • Waterways carry about 1% of India's transport, but about 95% of India's foreign trade moves by sea.
  • Airways in India are more developed than in Brazil.
  • Brazil has four time zones (2, 3, 4 or 5 hours behind GMT). Official Brazilian time (BRT) is GMT − 3 hours.
  • India has one standard time: IST, based on 82.5° E longitude (passes through Allahabad/Prayagraj), 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT.
  • Telecom in Brazil is modern in the central-south but weak in the north and north-west. India is one of the largest users of smartphones and internet. ISRO runs India's space programme; AEB is Brazil's space agency.

Important terms

  • Ecotourism – tourism that enjoys nature while protecting it.
  • Invisible trade – trade in services (like tourism) where no goods are exchanged.
  • Time zone – region that follows the same standard time.
  • Standard time – the official time of a country, based on a chosen longitude.

Key facts

  • Time difference between India and Brazil (BRT) = 5:30 + 3:00 = 8 hours 30 minutes; India is ahead.
  • Example: 12 noon in Delhi = 3:30 a.m. in Brasilia.
  • Extreme points of mainland Brazil differ in local time by about 2 hours 48 minutes (168 minutes); India's by about 2 hours (120 minutes).
  • Every 1° of longitude = 4 minutes of time.

5 important questions

Q1. Right or wrong with reason: Brazil's time is ahead of India's time.

Wrong. Brazil lies west of the Prime Meridian and its official time is 3 hours behind GMT. India's time is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT. So India is 8 hours 30 minutes ahead of Brazil.

Q2. Give geographical reason: Eco-tourism is being developed more in Brazil.

Brazil has rich but sensitive natural resources — dense Amazon forests, unique wildlife, beaches and islands. Ecotourism lets tourists enjoy them while protecting the environment.

Q3. Give geographical reason: A dense network of railways has developed in the North Indian Plains.

The plains are flat and fertile, densely populated, and have much agriculture, industry and trade. Laying railway lines is easy and the demand for transport is high.

Q4. What are the difficulties in developing railways in Brazil's interior?

Dense equatorial forests, swampy land, many rivers, very low population and the high cost of construction make railways difficult in the interior.

Q5. Right or wrong with reason: Tourism is an invisible trade.

Right. In tourism, services like stay, travel and guidance are sold, not physical goods, so it is called an invisible trade. It still earns foreign exchange.

Exam tip

Practise time calculations: find the time difference using GMT, then add if the place is to the east and subtract if it is to the west.

Quick summary

In the board paper you get a map of India or Brazil and short questions on it. Each answer comes straight from the map, so read the title, legend and directions first, then answer in one full sentence.

Key points

  • Step 1: read the title – it tells you what the map shows (relief, rivers, roads, ports, rainfall, population).
  • Step 2: read the legend (key) – which symbol or colour means what.
  • Step 3: find the north arrow and use directions (N, S, E, W, NE, SW…).
  • Step 4: find the place asked, then look around it: which river, highland or coast is near?
  • Write every answer as a sentence that repeats the question's words, e.g. "The southernmost port shown is Rio Grande."
  • Answer only from the map; if the map does not show something, do not add outside places.

Important terms

  • Legend / Index (सूची) – box explaining the map's symbols and colours.
  • Contour / height colours (उंचीदर्शक रंग) – shades showing land height in metres.
  • Water divide (जलविभाजक) – high land that separates two river basins.
  • Port (बंदर) – a harbour place on a coast or river where ships load and unload.

Quick summary

Graph questions compare India and Brazil using numbers – population, life expectancy, trade, urbanisation. Read the graph's parts first, then pick values carefully and answer in a sentence.

Key points

  • Read the title, then the X-axis (usually years or age groups) and Y-axis (value and unit, e.g. %, years, crore).
  • Note the scale / interval on the Y-axis (e.g. 1 line = 5 years) before reading any value.
  • Use the legend to know which line or bar is India and which is Brazil.
  • Common questions: type of graph, highest/lowest value, the year two lines meet, difference between two values, which country grew faster.
  • For a difference, subtract and write the unit: "Brazil is 7 years ahead."
  • If asked to draw a graph: title, both axes labelled, a clear scale, legend, equal bar width.

Important terms

  • Line graph (रेषालेख) – shows change over time.
  • Bar / joint bar graph (स्तंभालेख / जोडस्तंभालेख) – compares values side by side.
  • Age-sex pyramid (वय व लिंग मनोरा) – males on one side, females on the other, age groups up the middle.
  • Life expectancy (आयुर्मान) – average years a newborn is expected to live.
