Essay
Just as a true friend stands by us in times of trouble, trees keep giving to us all our lives without asking for anything. That is why trees are our true friends.
Trees give us the oxygen we need to live and absorb carbon dioxide from the air. This keeps the air clean. In summer, sitting under a tree gives us cool shade. Trees stop soil erosion and also help bring rain.
Trees give us sweet fruits, beautiful flowers, grain, vegetables, wood, gum and many medicines too. Trees and plants such as neem, tulsi and amla are useful for our health. Birds build their nests in trees. Monkeys, squirrels and many insects live in trees. One tree is a home for many living things.
Today, however, trees are being cut on a large scale for roads, buildings and factories. Because of this, pollution has increased, summers are getting hotter and rainfall has become irregular. Birds and animals are losing their homes. If we hurt a friend, we lose in the end; in the same way, by cutting trees we are harming ourselves.
So we must follow the mantra "Plant trees, protect trees". We can plant a sapling on our birthday or on any happy day. We should not stop at planting it, but water it and look after it until it grows big. Using paper carefully also saves trees.
At our school there is tree plantation every monsoon, and each student takes responsibility for one sapling. The sapling I planted is now as tall as I am. If we make friends with trees, the earth will stay green and our lives will be happy.
