Essay

Do we ever stop to think whose hard work brings the bhakri, rice, dal, vegetables and fruit to our plates? The answer is – the farmer. The farmer, who fills the stomach of the whole country, is truly the one who feeds the nation. India is an agricultural country, and even today a large number of people depend on farming.

The farmer's day begins before sunrise. He wakes at dawn, gives fodder and water to his cattle, and then sets off for the field. Sun, rain or bitter cold, he toils in the field all day. Sometimes ploughing, sometimes sowing, sometimes weeding, sometimes watering the crops – his work never takes a holiday.

Farming moves with the seasons. As soon as the monsoon draws near, the farmer keeps his eyes on the sky. When the first rain falls, he joyfully sows his seeds. When the green crops begin to sway, his heart fills with happiness. Finally, at harvest time, when the grain comes home, his hard work is rewarded. The farmer's joys and sorrows depend entirely on nature.

But the farmer's life is not easy. Sometimes the rain does not come on time; sometimes heavy rain washes away a standing crop. Sometimes there is a hailstorm; sometimes pests attack the crops. He has to spend money on seeds, fertilisers and tools, and often he has to take a loan for it. Even after all this, there is no guarantee that his crop will fetch a fair price. At such times the farmer's situation becomes very hard.

Today, farming is changing. Drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, machines, improved seeds and organic farming are making it possible to grow more with less water. Weather forecasts and market prices are now available on mobile phones. With the support of education and technology, farming can become more profitable.

The farmer does not grow only food grain; he also supplies raw material to many industries. Clothes are made from cotton, sugar is made from sugarcane, and edible oil comes from oilseeds. Along with farming, many farmers also run side businesses such as dairy, poultry and fruit orchards, which create jobs in villages. Festivals like Pola are celebrated by farmers to show gratitude to their bullocks. This shows the warm bond between the farmer and nature, and between the farmer and his animals.

We should feel grateful to the farmer. We should not waste food, because there is a farmer's hard work behind every grain. Society should come together so that farmers' children get chances to study and the farmer gets a fair price for his produce.

The farmer is the backbone of the nation. Because he toils, we can eat without worry. Only when the farmer is happy will the nation be truly happy and prosperous. That is why respecting his hard work is the duty of each one of us.
