Quick summary
Physical geography is the branch of geography that studies the natural features of the earth. It looks at landforms, climate, water, soils and plants, and how they are spread over the earth's surface. It also studies how these natural elements are connected with each other and with human life.
Key points
Geography means "description of the earth". The word comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and graphein (to describe). The term is credited to the Greek scholar Eratosthenes.
Geography has two main branches: physical geography (natural environment) and human geography (human activities).
Physical geography (प्राकृतिक भूगोल) studies the four "spheres" of the earth: lithosphere (land), atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water) and biosphere (living things).
It is a bridge between geography and natural sciences such as geology, meteorology, oceanography, botany and zoology.
It asks three basic questions: What is found, where is it found, and why is it found there.
The approach is spatial (study of place and distribution) and systematic (study of one element across the whole earth).
Physical geography helps in planning agriculture, settlements, dams, roads and disaster management.
Modern physical geography uses tools like maps, aerial photos, remote sensing, GIS and GPS.
Important terms
Lithosphere – the solid outer layer of the earth made of rocks and soil.
Atmosphere – the envelope of gases around the earth.
Hydrosphere – all water on earth: oceans, rivers, lakes, ice and groundwater.
Biosphere – the zone where life exists, where land, air and water meet.
Spatial distribution – how a feature is spread over the earth's surface.
Environment – all natural and man-made surroundings that affect life.
Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter (both German) are called the founders of modern geography.
Humboldt's famous work is Kosmos.
5 important questions
Q1. Define physical geography.
Physical geography is the branch of geography that studies the natural features of the earth's surface, such as landforms, climate, water, soils and vegetation, their distribution and their inter-relations.
Q2. Name the four spheres studied in physical geography.
Lithosphere (land), atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water) and biosphere (living world).
Q3. Explain the nature of physical geography.
It is a natural science branch of geography.
It studies the earth as the home of man.
It is spatial: it explains where things are and why.
It is integrating: it links the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere.
It studies both the present state and changes over time (dynamic nature).
It uses scientific methods: observation, measurement, maps and field work.
Q5. Explain the importance of physical geography for human life.
Helps understand where farming, settlements and industries are possible.
Weather and climate study helps agriculture (for example, monsoon forecasts in India).
Knowledge of landforms helps in building roads, railways and dams.
Helps in disaster management: floods, earthquakes, cyclones, droughts.
Helps conserve natural resources and protect the environment.
Exam tip
For "nature and scope" questions, always write a definition first, then the branches in a table or list, and end with the importance. Mention Humboldt and Ritter for extra marks.

Quick summary
This topic explains how the earth and the solar system were formed. Over the last 250 years scientists gave many theories, which are grouped into monistic (one parent body) and dualistic (two stars) theories. Today the modern solar nebula theory, together with the Big Bang theory for the universe, is accepted by most scientists.
Key points
The earth is about 4.6 billion years old; the universe is about 13.8 billion years old.
Monistic theories say the solar system came from one parent body (a nebula). Example: Kant and Laplace.
Dualistic theories say a second star came near the sun and pulled out matter. Example: Chamberlin–Moulton, Jeans–Jeffreys.
Kant's Gaseous Hypothesis (1755): a slowly rotating cloud of cold gas and dust became hot by collisions and formed the sun and planets.
Laplace's Nebular Hypothesis (1796): a hot, rotating nebula cooled and contracted. As it spun faster, rings of matter separated from its edge and condensed into planets. The central part became the sun.
Planetesimal Hypothesis (Chamberlin and Moulton, 1905): a passing star raised tides on the sun; ejected matter cooled into small solid bodies called planetesimals, which joined to form planets.
Tidal Hypothesis (Jeans 1919, Jeffreys 1929): a large star pulled a cigar-shaped filament out of the sun. The thick middle part gave big planets (Jupiter, Saturn) and the thin ends gave small planets.
Big Bang Theory (Lemaître, 1927; supported by Hubble's discovery of the expanding universe in 1929): the universe began from a single, extremely hot and dense point and has been expanding ever since.
Modern Solar Nebula Theory: the sun formed at the centre of a collapsing cloud of gas and dust; the remaining disc formed planetesimals and then planets by accretion.
After formation the earth went through differentiation – heavy iron sank to form the core and light material rose to form the crust; gases from inside formed the early atmosphere, and rain formed the oceans.
Important terms
Nebula (तेजोमेघ) – a huge cloud of gas and dust in space.
Planetesimals – small solid bodies from which planets grew.
Accretion – the process of small particles joining to form larger bodies.
Angular momentum – the quantity of rotation of a body; Laplace's theory cannot explain why the sun has very little of it.
Geoid – the true shape of the earth: a slightly flattened sphere, bulging at the equator.
Differentiation – separation of earth materials into layers by density.

Equatorial diameter about 12,756 km; polar diameter about 12,714 km.
Rotation: about 23 hours 56 minutes; revolution: about 365¼ days; axis tilted about 23½° from the perpendicular.
5 important questions
Q1. What is the difference between monistic and dualistic theories?
Monistic theories explain the origin of the solar system from one parent body (a nebula), e.g. Laplace. Dualistic theories need two bodies – the sun and a passing star – e.g. the tidal hypothesis of Jeans.
Q2. What are planetesimals?
Small, cold, solid bodies formed from matter thrown out of the sun. According to Chamberlin and Moulton, they joined together to form the planets.
Q3. Explain Laplace's Nebular Hypothesis and its criticism.
Faster rotation increases centrifugal force at the equator; rings separate one by one.
Rings condense into planets; the central mass becomes the sun; satellites form the same way from planets.
Criticism: rings of gas would scatter, not condense; it cannot explain the small angular momentum of the sun; some satellites move in the opposite direction.
Merit: simple, explains the same direction of revolution of planets.
Q4. Describe the tidal hypothesis of Jeans and Jeffreys.
A giant star came close to the sun; its gravity raised a huge tide on the sun.
A long cigar-shaped filament was pulled out; it broke into pieces that formed planets.
Explains the size order of planets: small near the sun, big in the middle, small at the end.
Criticism: such hot matter would spread out in space; chance of a star coming so close is very low; the planets are too far from the sun.
Q5. Explain the Big Bang theory and the modern view of the origin of the earth.
Universe began about 13.8 billion years ago from a singularity; expansion and cooling formed atoms, then stars and galaxies.
Solar nebula collapsed about 4.6 billion years ago; sun at centre; disc → planetesimals → planets.
Earth's evolution: heating, differentiation into core, mantle, crust; outgassing formed atmosphere; condensation formed oceans; life changed the atmosphere (oxygen).
Exam tip
Learn the table of scientists and years – one-mark questions are often "Who gave the planetesimal hypothesis?". For long answers, always add the criticism of a theory.

Quick summary
The geological time scale is the calendar of the earth's 4.6-billion-year history. Geologists divide this long time into eons, eras, periods and epochs on the basis of rock layers, fossils and major events such as mass extinctions. It helps us know when mountains, coal, oil and life forms appeared.
Key points
The largest unit is the eon, then era, period and epoch.
Precambrian time (about 4,600 to 540 million years ago) covers nearly 88% of earth history. It includes the Hadean, Archaean and Proterozoic eons. Life was simple (bacteria, algae).
The Phanerozoic eon (540 million years ago to today) is the age of visible life. It has three eras: Palaeozoic (old life), Mesozoic (middle life) and Cenozoic (new life).
Palaeozoic era (540–252 Ma): Cambrian explosion of life, first fish, first land plants, great coal forests in the Carboniferous period. It ended with the Permian mass extinction, the biggest in history.
Mesozoic era (252–66 Ma) is the age of reptiles (dinosaurs). Pangaea began to break up. It ended with the extinction at 66 Ma, when dinosaurs died out.
Cenozoic era (66 Ma–today) is the age of mammals. The Himalayas and Alps rose during this era. The Quaternary period (last 2.6 million years) saw ice ages and the rise of humans.
The present epoch is the Holocene, which began about 11,700 years ago after the last ice age.
Relative dating tells which rock is older (law of superposition, fossils). Absolute dating gives age in years using radioactive decay.
Indian link: the Deccan Traps basalt of Maharashtra was formed by huge lava flows near the end of the Cretaceous (about 66 Ma). India's main coal comes from the Gondwana rocks.
Important terms
Era (महाकल्प) – a major division of geological time, e.g. Mesozoic.
Law of superposition – in undisturbed layers, lower layers are older than upper ones.
Index fossil – a fossil of a species that lived for a short time over a wide area; it helps to date rocks.
Radiometric dating – finding age from the decay of radioactive elements (uranium, potassium, carbon-14).
Half-life – time taken for half of a radioactive element to decay (carbon-14: about 5,730 years).
Mass extinction – sudden loss of a large share of species.

Relative dating: superposition, cross-cutting relations, index fossils (William Smith).
Absolute dating: radiometric methods – uranium-lead for very old rocks, potassium-argon for volcanic rocks, carbon-14 for remains up to about 50,000 years.
Combined use builds the time scale.

(Magma).

Quick summary
The interior of the earth cannot be seen directly. Scientists know about it mainly from the study of earthquake (seismic) waves, volcanic material, meteorites, and changes in temperature, pressure and density with depth. The earth is divided into three main layers: crust, mantle and core.
Key points
The deepest mines and drill holes go only a few kilometres down, so the interior is studied by indirect sources.
Direct sources: rocks from mines and drilling, volcanic lava and magma.
Indirect sources: seismic waves, meteorites, gravity, magnetism, temperature and pressure increase with depth.
Temperature rises with depth, roughly 1°C for every 32 metres in the upper part of the crust; the rate slows down at greater depth.
The average density of the earth is about 5.5 g/cm³, while crustal rocks are only about 2.7–3.0 g/cm³. So the inner layers must be much denser.
P-waves (primary) travel through solids, liquids and gases. S-waves (secondary) travel only through solids.
S-waves do not pass through the outer core. This shows that the outer core is liquid.
Between about 105° and 145° from the epicentre, no direct P or S waves are recorded. This is the shadow zone.
The earth's magnetic field is believed to come from the movement of molten iron in the outer core.
Important terms
Crust – the thin outer layer; continental crust (SIAL) and oceanic crust (SIMA).
Mantle – the thick middle layer, from the Moho to about 2,900 km depth.
Core – the central part, made mainly of nickel and iron (NIFE).
Discontinuity – a boundary where the speed of seismic waves changes sharply.
Asthenosphere – the weak, partly molten zone in the upper mantle on which plates move.
Lithosphere – the crust plus the uppermost solid mantle.
Key facts
Layer
Approx. depth
Main features
Crust
0 to about 30–35 km (continents), about 5–10 km (oceans)
SIAL (silica + aluminium) and SIMA (silica + magnesium)
Mantle
Up to about 2,900 km
Silicate rocks rich in iron and magnesium; includes asthenosphere
Outer core
About 2,900–5,150 km
Liquid iron and nickel
Inner core
About 5,150–6,371 km
Solid iron and nickel, very high pressure
Mohorovičić (Moho) discontinuity – between crust and mantle.
Gutenberg discontinuity – between mantle and core (about 2,900 km).
Conrad discontinuity – between SIAL and SIMA in the crust.
Lehmann discontinuity – between outer and inner core.
The terms SIAL, SIMA and NIFE were given by Eduard Suess.
5 important questions
Q1. What is the Moho discontinuity?
It is the boundary between the earth's crust and the mantle, where the speed of seismic waves increases suddenly. It was discovered by Andrija Mohorovičić in 1909.
Q2. Why is the outer core believed to be liquid?
Because S-waves, which travel only through solids, do not pass through the outer core.
Q3. Explain the sources of information about the earth's interior.
Direct: mining and drilling, volcanic eruptions (lava and gases).
Indirect: temperature, pressure and density increase with depth.
Meteorites, which are believed to be made of material similar to the earth's interior.
Gravity and magnetic surveys.
Most important: behaviour of seismic waves (P, S and surface waves) and shadow zones.
Q4. Describe the internal structure of the earth.
Crust: thinnest layer; SIAL above SIMA; separated by Conrad discontinuity.
Moho discontinuity separates crust and mantle.
Mantle: about 2,900 km thick; upper mantle has the asthenosphere.
Gutenberg discontinuity separates mantle and core.
Outer core: liquid; inner core: solid; both mainly iron and nickel.
Temperature, pressure and density increase towards the centre.
Q5. How do seismic waves help us understand the earth's interior?
P-waves are fastest and pass through all states of matter.
S-waves pass only through solids.
Waves bend (refract) and change speed when they enter layers of different density.
Absence of S-waves beyond about 105° shows a liquid outer core.
Shadow zone (about 105°–145°) shows the size of the core.
Sudden speed changes mark the discontinuities.
Exam tip
Draw a neat labelled cross-section of the earth (crust, mantle, outer core, inner core with depths and the four discontinuities). A diagram can earn full marks in a long answer.

Quick summary
Rocks are natural aggregates of one or more minerals that make up the earth's crust. On the basis of their origin, rocks are divided into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. One type can change into another through the rock cycle.
Key points
A mineral is a natural inorganic substance with a definite chemical composition and internal structure (for example, quartz, feldspar, mica).
A rock (खडक) is a mixture of minerals. The science of rocks is called petrology.
Igneous rocks form when hot molten magma or lava cools and becomes solid. They are called primary rocks because all other rocks come from them.
Intrusive (plutonic) igneous rocks cool slowly inside the earth and have large crystals, e.g. granite.
Extrusive (volcanic) igneous rocks cool quickly on the surface and have small crystals, e.g. basalt.
The Deccan Plateau of Maharashtra is made mostly of basalt formed by lava flows (the Deccan Traps). The black regur soil of Maharashtra forms from this basalt.
Sedimentary rocks form from layers (strata) of sediments deposited by water, wind or ice and later pressed and cemented. They often contain fossils.
Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are changed by great heat and pressure.
Coal and limestone are sedimentary; marble and slate are metamorphic.
Important terms
Magma – molten rock inside the earth; called lava when it comes out.
Strata – layers in sedimentary rocks.
Fossil – remains or marks of ancient plants and animals preserved in rock.
Metamorphism – change in a rock's form and minerals due to heat and pressure.
Rock cycle – the continuous process by which rocks change from one type to another.
Acidic and basic rocks – igneous rocks rich in silica (acidic, e.g. granite) or poor in silica (basic, e.g. basalt).

5 important questions
Q1. Why are igneous rocks called primary rocks?
Because they were the first rocks to form from cooling molten material, and sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are ultimately derived from them.
Q2. What are fossils? In which rocks are they found?
Fossils are preserved remains or impressions of ancient plants and animals. They are mostly found in sedimentary rocks.
Q3. Describe the characteristics and types of sedimentary rocks.
Formed by deposition of sediments in layers (stratified).

Quick summary
Isostasy is the condition of balance between the high and low parts of the earth's crust. The light crust "floats" on the denser, plastic mantle below, much like ice floats on water. Mountains stand high because they have deep roots of light rock, and when load is added or removed the crust slowly sinks or rises to regain balance.
Key points
The word isostasy (समस्थायित्व) means "equal standing". It was coined by the American geologist Clarence Dutton in 1889.
The idea came from the Survey of India in the 1850s under George Everest. A plumb line near the Himalayas was pulled less towards the mountains than expected. This meant the mountains had less mass than their size suggested.
Sir George Airy (1855): all crustal blocks have the same density but different thickness. Higher mountains have deeper roots that sink into the denser layer – "roots of mountains".
J. H. Pratt (1855–59): crustal blocks have different densities but end at the same depth, called the level of compensation. High mountains are made of lighter rock; ocean floors of heavier rock.
Heiskanen later combined both ideas; Joly linked isostasy with heat from radioactivity.
Modern seismic studies show the crust really is thicker under mountains (about 60–70 km under the Himalayas and Tibet) and thin under oceans (about 5–10 km), which supports Airy.
Isostatic adjustment: erosion removes load from mountains so they rise slowly; deposition adds load to deltas so they sink.
Post-glacial rebound: after the ice sheets melted, Scandinavia and the Hudson Bay region of Canada are still rising.
Perfect isostasy is rare; areas like the Himalayas are still not fully balanced, which is linked to earthquakes.
Important terms
Isostasy – balance of crustal blocks of different heights on the denser mantle.
Level of compensation – the depth at which pressure of all overlying columns is equal.
Root of mountain – thick, light crust extending deep below a mountain (Airy).
Isostatic rebound – slow rise of crust after a load (ice, rock) is removed.
Sial and sima – the lighter continental crust (silica + aluminium) and denser oceanic crust/upper mantle (silica + magnesium).

5 important questions
Q1. What is isostasy?
Isostasy is the state of balance in which the light crustal blocks of different heights float on the denser, plastic layer below, so that equal mass lies above the level of compensation.
Q2. What is post-glacial rebound? Give an example.
It is the slow rising of land after a heavy ice sheet melts and its load is removed. Example: Scandinavia and the Hudson Bay area.
Q3. Compare the views of Airy and Pratt on isostasy.
Background: the Himalayan plumb-line problem in the Survey of India.
Airy: uniform density, varying thickness, deep roots under mountains (floating-wood/iceberg example).
Pratt: varying density, uniform depth of compensation (bars of copper, iron, lead in mercury).
Criticism of each; modern seismology supports Airy's roots more, but density does differ too.
Conclude with Heiskanen's combined view.
Q4. Explain how isostatic adjustment takes place.
Mantle below the crust behaves like a very thick fluid over long time.
Removal of load (erosion, melting ice) → crust rises; addition of load (sediments, ice, large reservoirs) → crust sinks.
Examples: rising Scandinavia; sinking of large deltas like the Ganga–Brahmaputra delta.
Effects: change in sea level along coasts, raised beaches, earthquakes.

Quick summary
This topic explains how continents and ocean basins were formed and how they move. Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift Theory (1912) said that all continents were once joined as one landmass called Pangaea. Later, the ideas of sea-floor spreading and plate tectonics gave a scientific explanation of this movement.
Key points
Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist, proposed the Continental Drift Theory in 1912.
He said there was one supercontinent, Pangaea, surrounded by one ocean, Panthalassa.
Pangaea broke into Laurasia (north) and Gondwanaland (south), separated by the Tethys Sea.
Gondwanaland included India, Africa, South America, Australia and Antarctica.
Evidence: jig-saw fit of coastlines (South America and Africa), similar rocks and mountains on both sides of the Atlantic, same fossils (e.g. Glossopteris plant, Mesosaurus reptile) on different continents, and traces of old glaciation (tillite) in India and the southern continents.
Weakness: Wegener could not explain the force that moved the continents. His suggested forces (tidal force, pole-fleeing force) were too weak.
Arthur Holmes (1930s) suggested convection currents in the mantle as a driving force.
Harry Hess (early 1960s) proposed sea-floor spreading: new crust forms at mid-ocean ridges and moves away on both sides.
Plate tectonics (developed in the 1960s, e.g. by McKenzie, Parker and Morgan): the lithosphere is broken into rigid plates that move over the asthenosphere.
The Indian plate moved north, collided with the Eurasian plate and formed the Himalayas.
Important terms
Plate – a large rigid slab of lithosphere (continental or oceanic).
Divergent boundary – plates move apart; new crust forms (constructive), e.g. Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Convergent boundary – plates move towards each other; one may sink (destructive), forming trenches or fold mountains.
Transform boundary – plates slide past each other; crust is neither made nor destroyed (conservative), e.g. San Andreas Fault.
Subduction – sinking of a denser plate under another into the mantle.
Palaeomagnetism – the record of the earth's past magnetic field in rocks; bands of normal and reversed magnetism on the sea floor support sea-floor spreading.
Key facts
Major plates: Pacific, North American, South American, Eurasian, African, Indo-Australian, Antarctic.
Some minor plates: Nazca, Cocos, Philippine, Arabian, Caribbean, Juan de Fuca.
Rocks of the ocean floor become older as we move away from mid-ocean ridges.
Ocean floor rocks are much younger than the oldest continental rocks.
Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur along plate boundaries, e.g. the Pacific "Ring of Fire".
5 important questions
Q1. What was Pangaea?
Pangaea was the single huge supercontinent which, according to Wegener, existed before the continents drifted apart. It was surrounded by a vast ocean called Panthalassa.
Q2. Define sea-floor spreading.
It is the process by which new oceanic crust forms at mid-ocean ridges from rising magma and spreads away on both sides. It was proposed by Harry Hess.
Q3. Give the evidence in support of Continental Drift Theory.
Jig-saw fit of the coasts of South America and Africa.
Similar rocks and mountain belts across the Atlantic.
Same fossils (Glossopteris, Mesosaurus) on separated continents.
Old glacial deposits (tillite) in India, Africa, Australia, South America.
Coal deposits in Antarctica, showing a past warm climate.
Placer gold deposits in Ghana without a local source, matching rocks in Brazil.
Q4. Explain the theory of plate tectonics.
Lithosphere is divided into major and minor rigid plates.
Plates move over the soft asthenosphere, driven mainly by mantle convection.
Three boundaries: divergent, convergent, transform.
New crust is made at ridges and destroyed at subduction zones.
Explains earthquakes, volcanoes, fold mountains and ocean trenches.
Example: Indian plate collision formed the Himalayas.
Q5. Describe the types of plate boundaries with examples.
Transform: plates slide sideways; strong earthquakes (San Andreas Fault).
Exam tip
Write Wegener's theory as: proposer and year → main idea → evidence → criticism. Then connect it to plate tectonics. A world sketch of major plates adds value.

Quick summary
Forces from inside the earth (endogenic forces) slowly bend and break the rocks of the crust. Bending of rock layers produces folds, and breaking with movement produces faults. These two processes create many major landforms such as fold mountains, rift valleys and block mountains.
Key points
Slow internal movements of the crust are called diastrophism (भूहालचाल). They are of two types: epeirogenic (vertical, continent-building – uplift or subsidence of large areas) and orogenic (horizontal, mountain-building).
Horizontal forces are compressional (pushing together) or tensional (pulling apart).
Folds form when compression bends layers of rock that are plastic enough to bend.
The up-fold is an anticline and the down-fold is a syncline. The sides of a fold are called limbs.
Types of folds by increasing compression: symmetrical, asymmetrical, monocline, isoclinal, overturned, recumbent, and overthrust fold / nappe (when the fold breaks and is pushed far over other rocks).
Faults form when rocks are brittle and break, and the blocks move along the break (fault plane).
Normal fault: caused by tension; the hanging wall moves down.
Reverse fault: caused by compression; the hanging wall moves up. A low-angle reverse fault is a thrust fault.
Strike-slip (tear) fault: blocks slide sideways past each other, e.g. San Andreas Fault, USA.
Rift valley (graben): a block sinks between two parallel faults, e.g. Narmada and Tapi valleys in India, the East African Rift, the Rhine valley.
Block mountain (horst): a block stands high between two faults, e.g. Vosges and Black Forest in Europe; the Satpura range is often described as a block mountain.
Important terms
Anticline (अपनती) – upward arch-shaped fold.
Syncline (अभिनती) – downward trough-shaped fold.
Fault plane – the surface along which a fault block moves.
Hanging wall / footwall – the block above / below an inclined fault plane.
Throw – the vertical displacement along a fault.

5 important questions
Q1. Distinguish between an anticline and a syncline.
An anticline is an upfold in which the rock layers bend upwards like an arch; a syncline is a downfold in which they bend downwards like a trough.
Q2. What is a rift valley? Give an example.
A long, narrow valley formed when a block of land sinks between two parallel normal faults. Example: the Narmada valley.
Q3. Describe the types of folds with diagrams.
Define folding and its cause (compression on plastic rocks).

Quick summary
Mountains are high landmasses with steep slopes and narrow summits. The great fold mountains of the world, such as the Himalayas and the Alps, were formed by the folding of thick sediments laid down in long, narrow seas called geosynclines. Many theories explain mountain building; today plate tectonics gives the most complete explanation.
Key points
Mountain building is called orogeny (पर्वतनिर्मिती).
Types of mountains: fold mountains (Himalayas, Alps, Andes), block mountains (Vosges, Satpura), volcanic mountains (Fujiyama, Kilimanjaro) and residual mountains (Aravalli, Nilgiri – worn-down old mountains).
A geosyncline (भूसन्नती) is a long, narrow, shallow sea which slowly sinks while thick layers of sediment collect in it.
Kober's Geosynclinal Theory (1921): rigid blocks called forelands (kratogens) lie on both sides of the geosyncline. Their movement towards each other squeezes the sediments into folds and raises mountain ranges (orogen). A middle part may stay unfolded as a median mass (zwischengebirge), e.g. the Tibetan plateau.
Kober's three stages: lithogenesis (filling with sediments), orogenesis (folding and uplift) and gliptogenesis (erosion of the raised mountains).
Jeffreys' Thermal Contraction Theory: the earth is cooling and shrinking; the crust wrinkles like the skin of a drying apple.
Holmes' Convection Current Theory (1928–29): heat from radioactivity sets up convection currents in the mantle; where currents converge, crust is pulled down and compressed into mountains.
Plate tectonic view: fold mountains form at convergent boundaries. Ocean–continent collision gives the Andes; continent–continent collision gives the Himalayas (Indian plate pushing into the Eurasian plate, closing the Tethys Sea).
Major periods of mountain building: Caledonian (about 430–400 million years ago; Scottish Highlands, Scandinavia), Hercynian / Variscan (about 340–250 Ma; Urals, Appalachians), Alpine (Tertiary, mainly in the last 65 million years; Himalayas, Alps, Rockies, Andes).
The Aravalli range is among the oldest fold mountains in India, now a residual range.
Important terms
Orogeny – the process of mountain building.
Geosyncline – a long, sinking sea basin filled with thick sediments.
Foreland (kratogen) – a stable, rigid block bordering a geosyncline.
Median mass – an unfolded middle block between two ranges.
Nappe – a large rock sheet folded and pushed far forward over other rocks.
Young fold mountains – recently formed, high, sharp-peaked ranges like the Himalayas.

Quick summary
Earthquakes and volcanoes are sudden movements of the earth caused by forces inside it (endogenic forces). An earthquake is a shaking of the ground due to release of energy in the crust. A volcano is an opening through which molten rock, gases and ash come out. Both mostly occur along plate boundaries.
Key points
An earthquake (भूकंप) is the sudden shaking of the earth's surface caused by release of energy, usually along a fault.
The point inside the earth where the earthquake starts is the focus (hypocentre). The point on the surface directly above it is the epicentre. Damage is greatest near the epicentre.
Earthquake waves: P-waves (fastest, longitudinal), S-waves (transverse, solids only) and surface waves (L-waves, slowest and most destructive).
Instrument: seismograph. Magnitude is measured on the Richter scale; intensity (damage) on the Mercalli scale.
Causes: plate movements, faulting, volcanic activity, and human causes like large reservoirs (reservoir-induced seismicity).
In Maharashtra, the Latur (Killari) earthquake of 30 September 1993 caused heavy loss of life. The Koyna earthquake of 1967 is often linked to the Koyna dam reservoir.
A volcano (ज्वालामुखी) is a vent in the crust through which magma, gases and fragments erupt.
Volcanoes are classified by activity: active, dormant and extinct.
Volcanic landforms: cones, craters, calderas, lava plateaus; intrusive forms like batholiths, laccoliths, sills and dykes.
About two-thirds of active volcanoes are in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Barren Island in the Andaman Sea is India's only active volcano.

Quick summary
Weathering is the breaking down of rocks at or near the earth's surface, in the same place, by weather and living things. Erosion is the removal and carrying away of this broken material by agents such as running water, wind, glaciers, waves and groundwater. Together they slowly lower and shape the land (denudation).
Key points
Weathering (अपक्षय) is in situ: the rock breaks but does not move.
Erosion involves movement of rock material by an agent.
Denudation = weathering + mass wasting + erosion + transportation. These are exogenic (external) processes.
There are three types of weathering: physical (mechanical), chemical and biological.
Physical weathering is common in hot deserts and cold regions, where temperature changes are large.
Chemical weathering is fastest in hot and humid regions, because heat and water speed up chemical reactions.
Factors affecting weathering: climate, rock type and structure, slope, vegetation and time.
Mass wasting (mass movement) is the downslope movement of weathered material under gravity: landslides, rock fall, soil creep, mudflow. Landslides are common in the Western Ghats during the monsoon.
Weathering is useful: it forms soil, concentrates some ores (e.g. bauxite, iron ore) and prepares material for erosion.
Important terms
Exfoliation – peeling off of rock surfaces in curved sheets due to repeated heating and cooling ("onion weathering").
Frost action (frost wedging) – water freezes in cracks, expands by about 9% and splits the rock.
Block disintegration – rocks break into rectangular blocks along joints.
Oxidation – reaction of minerals with oxygen; iron-rich rocks turn reddish (rusting).
Laterite soil, common in the Konkan and Sahyadri, forms by intense chemical weathering (leaching) in hot, wet conditions.
Agents of erosion: running water (most important on land), wind (deserts), glaciers (high mountains and polar areas), sea waves (coasts), groundwater (limestone areas).
5 important questions
Q1. Distinguish between weathering and erosion.
Weathering is the breaking of rocks in their original place without movement. Erosion is the wearing away and removal of rock material by moving agents like water, wind or ice.
Q2. What is exfoliation?
It is the peeling off of outer rock layers in curved sheets, caused by repeated expansion during the day and contraction at night, mainly in hot deserts.
Q3. Explain the types of physical weathering.
Caused mainly by temperature change, frost and pressure release.
Exfoliation in hot deserts.
Block disintegration along joints.
Granular disintegration in coarse-grained rocks like granite.
Frost wedging in cold regions.
Salt weathering in dry and coastal areas.
Q4. Describe chemical weathering processes.
Oxidation: iron minerals react with oxygen, rock becomes red/brown.

Quick summary
Running water is the most important agent shaping the land surface. A river erodes its bed and banks, carries the eroded material and deposits it where its speed falls. In this way it forms valleys, gorges, waterfalls, meanders, flood plains and deltas, which change from the upper to the lower course.
Key points
A river erodes by hydraulic action (force of water), abrasion / corrasion (rubbing with rock load), attrition (load pieces breaking each other) and solution / corrosion (dissolving rocks such as limestone).
It transports load by traction (rolling), saltation (jumping), suspension (fine silt and clay floating) and solution (dissolved minerals).
The river works in three courses: upper (youth) – mainly vertical erosion; middle (mature) – lateral erosion and transport; lower (old) – deposition.
A gorge is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides (Indus, Sutlej and Brahmaputra gorges in the Himalayas); a canyon is a very deep gorge in dry areas (Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, USA).
Waterfalls form where a river falls over hard rock or a steep slope, e.g. Dhuandhar on the Narmada (Bhedaghat), Jog Falls on the Sharavati, Angel Falls (Venezuela, the highest in the world).
An ox-bow lake forms when the neck of a meander is cut off.
A delta forms at the mouth when a river deposits load faster than waves and tides can remove it. The Ganga–Brahmaputra delta (Sundarbans) is the largest in the world.
Rivers with strong tides at the mouth form estuaries instead of deltas, e.g. Narmada and Tapi.
Drainage patterns: dendritic (tree-like, Ganga plain), trellis (folded areas), radial (from a central high point, e.g. Amarkantak), rectangular (jointed rocks), centripetal (into a basin, e.g. Loktak lake).
Important terms
Base level – the lowest level to which a river can erode, usually sea level.
Meander (नागमोडी वळण) – a loop-like bend of a river in its middle or lower course.
Flood plain – flat land beside a river built by flood deposits.
Levee – a raised bank of deposits along a river channel.
Distributary – a branch that flows away from the main river, mainly in a delta.
Pothole – a round hollow drilled in the river bed by swirling pebbles.

5 important questions
Q1. What is an ox-bow lake?
A crescent-shaped lake formed when a river cuts across the narrow neck of a meander and leaves the old bend separated from the main channel.
Q2. Why do the Narmada and Tapi form estuaries and not deltas?
They flow through narrow rift valleys over hard rock, carry less sediment, and enter the Arabian Sea where tides are strong and wash the sediment away.

Quick summary
Besides rivers, three other agents shape the land: wind in deserts, glaciers in cold mountains and high latitudes, and underground water in limestone areas. Each erodes rock and deposits material in its own way, producing typical landforms such as sand dunes, U-shaped valleys and limestone caves.
Key points
Wind works best in dry areas with loose sand and little vegetation. It erodes by deflation (blowing away loose particles), abrasion (sand-blasting rock) and attrition.
Wind deposition landforms: sand dunes – barchans (crescent-shaped, horns pointing downwind), seif or longitudinal dunes – and loess (fine yellow dust; Loess Plateau of China). India's Thar desert has many barchans.
A glacier (हिमनदी) is a slowly moving mass of ice. It erodes by plucking (pulling out rock blocks) and abrasion (scraping with rock fragments in the ice).
Glacial erosion landforms: cirque (corrie), arête (sharp ridge), horn (pyramid peak, e.g. Matterhorn), U-shaped valley, hanging valley and fjord (drowned glacial valley, Norway).
Glacial deposition landforms: moraines (lateral, medial, terminal, ground), drumlins, eskers and outwash plains. Indian glaciers: Siachen, Gangotri (source of the Bhagirathi).
Underground water dissolves limestone and forms karst topography, named after the Karst region of Slovenia–Croatia.
Karst deposition: stalactites hang from cave roofs, stalagmites rise from the floor; when they join they form pillars. Indian caves: Borra Caves (Andhra Pradesh), Mawsmai (Meghalaya), Kutumsar (Chhattisgarh).
Important terms
Deflation – removal of loose dust and sand by wind.
Barchan – a crescent-shaped sand dune.
Cirque – an armchair-shaped hollow at the head of a glacial valley.
Moraine (हिमोढ) – an unsorted heap of rock debris deposited by a glacier.

Quick summary
The atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds the earth and is held by gravity. It contains gases, water vapour and dust particles. On the basis of temperature, it is divided into the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere.
Key points
The atmosphere (वातावरण) protects life, keeps the earth warm, gives oxygen for breathing and carbon dioxide for plants.
Nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%) make up about 99% of dry air by volume.
Argon is about 0.93%. Carbon dioxide is a small share (about 0.04%) but very important for the greenhouse effect.
Water vapour varies from almost 0 to about 4% and is mostly found in the lower atmosphere. It gives rise to clouds and rain.
Dust particles act as nuclei on which water vapour condenses.
About half of the mass of the atmosphere lies below about 5.5 km.
Ozone is concentrated in the stratosphere (about 15–35 km) and absorbs harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.
In the troposphere, temperature falls with height at about 6.5°C per 1,000 m (normal lapse rate).
All weather (clouds, rain, storms) happens in the troposphere.
Important terms
Troposphere – lowest layer; about 8 km thick at the poles and about 18 km at the equator.
Tropopause – the boundary between troposphere and stratosphere.
Stratosphere – layer above the troposphere, up to about 50 km; contains the ozone layer; good for jet planes because it is calm.
Mesosphere – up to about 80 km; temperature falls with height; meteors burn here; coldest layer.
Thermosphere (ionosphere) – above 80 km; temperature rises with height; ionised layers reflect radio waves; auroras occur here.
Exosphere – outermost layer, very thin air, merges with outer space.
Greenhouse gases – gases like CO₂, methane and water vapour that trap heat.
The Montreal Protocol (1987) was signed to phase out ozone-depleting substances such as CFCs.
5 important questions
Q1. Why is the troposphere called the "weather layer"?
Because almost all water vapour and dust are found in it, so clouds, rain, storms and other weather events take place in this layer.
Q2. What is the importance of the ozone layer?
The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs most of the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun and protects living beings from skin cancer, eye damage and crop harm.
Q3. Describe the composition of the atmosphere.
Gases: nitrogen, oxygen, argon, CO₂ and trace gases.
Role of each: oxygen for breathing, CO₂ for photosynthesis and warmth, nitrogen dilutes oxygen.
Water vapour: source of all precipitation, absorbs heat.
Dust particles: condensation nuclei, scatter sunlight (red sky at sunrise/sunset).
Composition is fairly uniform up to about 80 km (homosphere).
Q4. Explain the structure (layers) of the atmosphere with a diagram.
Troposphere: weather, lapse rate, thickest at equator.
Stratosphere: ozone layer, temperature rises, calm air.
Mesosphere: coldest, meteors burn.
Thermosphere/ionosphere: radio waves reflected, auroras.
Exosphere: outer limit.
Diagram: vertical bars with heights, layer names and temperature line.
Q5. Explain the importance of the atmosphere.
Gives oxygen and CO₂ needed for life.
Keeps temperature suitable through the greenhouse effect.
Blocks ultraviolet rays and burns meteors.
Carries water vapour and brings rain.
Helps radio communication through the ionosphere.
Exam tip
A labelled diagram of atmospheric layers with heights and a temperature curve is expected in long answers. Remember the troposphere height difference: about 8 km at poles, about 18 km at the equator.

Quick summary
Insolation is the energy received by the earth from the sun. It heats the earth's surface, and the surface then heats the air. The amount of insolation and the temperature of a place depend on latitude, land and water, altitude, ocean currents and other factors. The balance between incoming and outgoing energy is called the heat budget.
Key points
Insolation = Incoming solar radiation. The sun's energy reaches the earth as short waves.
The earth gives out heat as long waves (terrestrial radiation). The atmosphere is heated mainly by this terrestrial radiation, not directly by the sun.
So the atmosphere is heated from below.
The atmosphere is heated by conduction, convection, advection (horizontal movement of air) and radiation.
Insolation is highest near the tropics and lowest near the poles.
Factors affecting insolation: angle of the sun's rays, length of day, transparency of the atmosphere, and distance from the sun.
Factors affecting temperature: latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, ocean currents, winds, cloud cover and land relief.
The earth is nearest to the sun around 3 January (perihelion) and farthest around 4 July (aphelion); this has only a small effect on temperature.
Isotherms are lines joining places of equal temperature. They generally run east–west, bending over land and sea.
Important terms
Albedo – the share of insolation reflected back by a surface (snow has high albedo).
Heat budget – the balance between insolation received and heat lost by the earth, which keeps its average temperature steady.
Lapse rate – fall of temperature with height, about 6.5°C per 1,000 m.
Temperature inversion – a condition in which temperature increases with height instead of falling, e.g. on calm, clear winter nights in valleys.
Range of temperature – difference between maximum and minimum temperature (daily or annual).
Greenhouse effect – trapping of long-wave heat by gases like CO₂ and water vapour.
Key facts
Heat budget (as commonly given in textbooks): of 100 units of insolation, about 35 units are reflected back to space (the earth's albedo), and about 65 units are absorbed by the earth and atmosphere. All 65 units are finally radiated back, so the earth does not get warmer or cooler overall.
Land heats and cools faster than water. So coastal places (like Mumbai) have a small annual range, while interior places (like Nagpur) have a large range — an example of continentality.
Hill stations such as Mahabaleshwar are cooler because of altitude.
Warm ocean currents raise coastal temperature; cold currents lower it.
5 important questions
Q1. What is insolation?
Insolation is the solar energy received by the earth's surface, mainly as short-wave radiation.
Q2. Why is the atmosphere said to be heated from below?
Because short-wave solar rays pass through air with little heating; the earth absorbs them and radiates long waves, which heat the air from the bottom upwards.
Q3. Explain the factors affecting the distribution of temperature.
Latitude: vertical rays near the equator, slanting rays near poles.
Altitude: temperature falls with height.
Distance from sea: maritime vs continental climate.
Ocean currents: warm and cold currents.
Winds: e.g. warm loo winds in north India.
Relief and slope: sun-facing slopes are warmer.
Cloud cover and vegetation.
Q4. Explain the heat budget of the earth.
Earth receives 100 units of insolation.
About 35 units reflected (albedo) by clouds, snow and surface.
About 65 units absorbed (part by atmosphere, larger part by earth surface).
Earth radiates heat as long waves; atmosphere absorbs and re-radiates.
Outgoing radiation equals incoming, so average temperature stays constant.
Surplus near the equator, deficit near poles; balanced by winds and ocean currents.
Q5. What is temperature inversion? Explain its conditions and effects.
Temperature increases with height near the ground.

Quick summary
Atmospheric pressure is the weight of the column of air above a place. Pressure differs from place to place due to temperature and the earth's rotation. Air moves from high pressure to low pressure, and this moving air is called wind. Winds are classified as planetary, seasonal (periodic) and local winds.
Key points
Pressure is measured with a barometer (mercury or aneroid). The unit is the millibar (mb) or hectopascal (hPa).
Average sea-level pressure is about 1013.25 mb.
Pressure decreases with height, roughly 1 mb for every 10 m near the surface.
Isobars are lines on a map joining places of equal pressure.
There are seven pressure belts: the equatorial low, two sub-tropical highs (about 30° N and S), two sub-polar lows (about 60° N and S) and two polar highs.
The equatorial low and polar highs are thermal in origin; the sub-tropical highs and sub-polar lows are dynamic (caused by the earth's rotation and air movement).
Pressure belts shift about 5° north and south with the apparent movement of the sun.
Coriolis force, due to the earth's rotation, deflects winds to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere (Ferrel's Law).
The pressure gradient (difference of pressure over distance) decides wind speed. Close isobars mean strong winds.
The Indian monsoon is an example of seasonal winds (वारे) caused by unequal heating of land and sea.
Important terms
Planetary (permanent) winds – blow throughout the year between pressure belts: trade winds, westerlies, polar easterlies.
Trade winds – blow from sub-tropical highs towards the equator; north-east trades and south-east trades.
Westerlies – blow from sub-tropical highs towards sub-polar lows; stronger in the Southern Hemisphere ("Roaring Forties", "Furious Fifties", "Shrieking Sixties").
Doldrums – calm belt near the equator.
Horse latitudes – calm belts of sub-tropical high pressure.
Land and sea breeze – daily local winds near coasts.
Cyclone – low-pressure system with winds blowing inward, anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.
Anticyclone – high-pressure system with winds blowing outward, clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere.

5 important questions
Q1. Define isobars.
Isobars are lines drawn on a map joining places having equal atmospheric pressure, reduced to sea level.
Q2. What is the Coriolis force?
It is the apparent force caused by the rotation of the earth that deflects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.
Q3. Describe the pressure belts of the earth.
Equatorial low (0°–5°): heated air rises; doldrums.
Sub-tropical highs (about 30°): air sinks; horse latitudes; hot deserts.
Sub-polar lows (about 60°): air rises due to rotation and meeting of air masses.
Polar highs (90°): very cold, dense air.
Thermal vs dynamic origin.
Seasonal shifting with the sun.
Q4. Explain planetary winds.
Trade winds: 30° to equator; NE trades and SE trades; steady.
Westerlies: 30° to 60°; from south-west in NH and north-west in SH; variable in NH, strong in SH.
Polar easterlies: polar highs to sub-polar lows; cold.
All are deflected by Coriolis force.
Diagram of pressure belts and winds.
Q5. Explain land breeze and sea breeze.
Caused by unequal heating of land and water.
Day: land heats faster, low pressure on land; sea breeze blows from sea to land.
Night: land cools faster, high pressure on land; land breeze blows from land to sea.
Moderates coastal temperature (e.g. Mumbai).
Fishermen use land breeze to sail out early morning.
Exam tip
Draw the diagram of pressure belts and planetary winds on a circle — it answers many questions at once. Remember the deflection rule: right in NH, left in SH.

Quick summary
Humidity is the amount of water vapour in the air. When moist air cools to its dew point, the vapour condenses into tiny water drops, forming dew, fog and clouds. When these drops or ice crystals become heavy and fall to the earth, it is called precipitation. Rainfall is of three types: convectional, orographic and cyclonic.
Key points
Water vapour enters the air by evaporation and transpiration.
Warm air can hold more water vapour than cold air.
Saturation: when air holds the maximum vapour it can at a given temperature.
Dew point: the temperature at which air becomes saturated. Cooling below it causes condensation.
Forms of condensation: dew, frost, fog, mist and clouds.
Forms of precipitation (वृष्टी): rain, snow, sleet, hail and drizzle.
Humidity is measured with a hygrometer (wet and dry bulb thermometer). Rainfall is measured with a rain gauge, in millimetres.
Mumbai and the Konkan coast get heavy orographic rain from the south-west monsoon on the windward side of the Sahyadris; places on the leeward side (e.g. parts of Marathwada) lie in a rain-shadow area.
Important terms
Absolute humidity – actual mass of water vapour in a given volume of air (g/m³).
Specific humidity – mass of water vapour per unit mass of air (g/kg).
Relative humidity – actual vapour present compared with the maximum the air can hold at that temperature, in percent.
Fog – condensation near the ground that reduces visibility below 1 km; mist has more moisture and visibility is better.
Isohyets – lines on a map joining places of equal rainfall.
Rain-shadow area – the leeward side of a mountain that receives little rain.
Key facts
Relative humidity (RH) = (actual water vapour ÷ water vapour capacity at that temperature) × 100.
If the air temperature rises and the vapour stays the same, RH falls; if temperature falls, RH rises.

5 important questions
Q1. Define relative humidity.
Relative humidity is the ratio of the actual amount of water vapour in the air to the maximum amount it can hold at that temperature, expressed as a percentage.
Q2. What is dew point?
It is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapour, so that further cooling leads to condensation.
Q3. Explain the forms of condensation.
Dew: drops on cool surfaces when dew point is above freezing.
Frost: ice crystals when dew point is below 0°C.
Fog and mist: condensation in air near the ground.
Clouds: condensation at height around dust nuclei.
Orographic: windward slope gets heavy rain, leeward side is rain shadow (Mumbai vs Pune).
Cyclonic: warm and cold air masses meet; warm air rises along the front.
One labelled diagram for each.
Q5. Explain the importance of humidity and precipitation.
Source of fresh water for drinking, farming and industry.
Indian agriculture depends heavily on monsoon rainfall.
Humidity affects human comfort and evaporation.
Clouds and vapour control the earth's heat balance.
Rain fills rivers, dams and groundwater.
Exam tip
Orographic rain is a favourite question. Use the Sahyadri example: heavy rain on the Konkan side, much less on the Deccan side, with a labelled diagram of windward and leeward slopes.

Quick summary
An air mass is a huge body of air with nearly the same temperature and humidity throughout. When two different air masses meet, the boundary between them is called a front. Fronts and low-pressure systems give rise to cyclones – tropical cyclones over warm seas and temperate cyclones in the middle latitudes – which bring much of the world's stormy weather.
Key points
An air mass (वायुराशी) takes on the qualities of its source region – a large, uniform surface such as an ocean, a desert or a snowfield.
Classification (Bergeron): c = continental (dry), m = maritime (moist), P = polar (cold), T = tropical (warm), A = arctic. Main types: cP, mP, cT, mT.
A front is the sloping boundary zone between two air masses. Its formation is frontogenesis.
Cold front: cold air pushes under warm air; steep slope; short heavy rain and thunderstorms. Warm front: warm air rises gently over cold air; gentle slope; long steady rain. Occluded front: the cold front overtakes the warm front. Stationary front: neither air mass moves forward.
A cyclone is a low-pressure system with winds blowing inward, anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
Tropical cyclones form over warm oceans (surface water above about 26–27 °C) between about 5° and 20° latitude. They do not form at the equator because the Coriolis force there is almost zero.
A tropical cyclone has a calm, cloud-free eye at the centre surrounded by the eye wall of strongest winds and rain. It weakens over land because the supply of moisture stops.
Local names: cyclone (Indian Ocean), hurricane (Atlantic and East Pacific), typhoon (West Pacific), willy-willy (old name, Australia).
Temperate cyclones form along the polar front where cold polar and warm tropical air meet (Bjerknes' polar front theory). They are large, move from west to east with the westerlies and bring cloudy, rainy weather.
Western disturbances – temperate lows from the Mediterranean region – bring winter rain to north-west India, useful for the rabi wheat crop.
An anticyclone is a high-pressure system with outward, clockwise winds in the Northern Hemisphere and clear, calm weather.
Important terms
Source region – the area where an air mass forms and gets its properties.
Front – the boundary between two contrasting air masses.
Eye – the calm low-pressure centre of a tropical cyclone.
Storm surge – a rise of sea water pushed onto the coast by cyclone winds.
Occlusion – the lifting of warm air off the ground when a cold front catches a warm front.

5 important questions
Q1. What is an air mass?
A large body of air, extending over hundreds of kilometres, with nearly uniform temperature and humidity at a given height, acquired from its source region.
Q2. Why do tropical cyclones not form at the equator?
Because the Coriolis force, needed to give the winds their spinning motion, is almost zero at the equator.
Q3. Describe the classification of air masses and their source regions.
Meaning of air mass and conditions of a source region.
Bergeron classification: c, m, P, T, A, E.
Types with source regions and weather (cP – Siberia, Canada; mT – tropical oceans; cT – Sahara; mP – North Atlantic).
Modification of air masses as they move.
Q4. Explain the origin, structure and effects of tropical cyclones.
Remember the wind direction rule: cyclone – anticlockwise in the north, clockwise in the south; anticyclone – the opposite. One wrong arrow in the diagram costs marks.
(Atolls).

About 71% of the earth's surface is covered by oceans. The study of oceans is oceanography.
Continental shelf (खंडान्त उतार) – the gently sloping, shallow edge of a continent under the sea, usually up to about 200 m deep. It is rich in fish, oil and gas (e.g. Mumbai High).
Continental slope – the steeper slope from the shelf edge down to about 3,000 m; cut by submarine canyons.
Continental rise – a gentle slope of sediments at the foot of the slope.
Abyssal plain – the vast, flat deep-sea floor, about 3,000–6,000 m deep, covered with fine ooze.
Mid-oceanic ridges – long underwater mountain chains where new crust forms, e.g. the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Ocean trenches – the deepest, narrow parts of the oceans, at subduction zones. The Mariana Trench (Challenger Deep, about 11,000 m) in the Pacific is the deepest.
Other features: seamounts (underwater volcanic peaks), guyots (flat-topped seamounts), coral reefs and atolls.
Temperature: surface water is warmest near the equator (about 26–30 °C) and coldest near the poles. It falls with depth: a warm mixed layer at the top, a thermocline where temperature drops fast, and cold deep water (about 2–4 °C).
Salinity is the total amount of dissolved salts in sea water. The average is about 35 parts per thousand (35‰), i.e. 35 g of salt in 1,000 g of water.
Salinity is highest around 20°–30° latitude (high evaporation, low rain), lower at the equator (heavy rain) and lowest near the poles (melting ice).
Inland and enclosed seas show extremes: the Red Sea is about 40‰; the Baltic Sea is very low; the Dead Sea is extremely salty (over 300‰). The Bay of Bengal is less salty than the Arabian Sea because of large river inflow.
Important terms
Continental shelf – shallow submerged edge of a continent.
Abyssal plain – flat deep-ocean floor.
Trench – long, narrow, very deep depression in the ocean floor.
Thermocline – the layer in which ocean temperature falls rapidly with depth.
Salinity (क्षारता) – amount of salt in grams per 1,000 g of sea water.
Isohaline – a line joining places of equal salinity.

Factors affecting salinity: evaporation, precipitation, river water, melting ice, winds and ocean currents.
Q1. What is a continental shelf? Why is it important?
It is the shallow, gently sloping part of the sea floor next to a continent (up to about 200 m). It is important for fishing, petroleum and natural gas, and sand and minerals.
Q2. Why is salinity lower at the equator than at the tropics?
Because the equator gets heavy daily rainfall and high humidity, which dilute sea water, while the tropics have clear skies, strong evaporation and little rain.

Continental shelf, slope and rise – features and importance.
Abyssal plain.
Mid-oceanic ridges and their link with sea-floor spreading.
Trenches, seamounts, guyots, coral reefs.
A labelled cross-section diagram.
Q4. Explain the distribution of temperature in the oceans.
Horizontal: decreases from equator to poles; effect of currents and winds.

Q5. Discuss the factors and distribution of salinity of ocean water.

Quick summary
Ocean water is always moving. Waves are up-and-down movements of the surface caused mainly by wind; tides are the regular rise and fall of sea level caused by the pull of the moon and the sun; ocean currents are large streams of water flowing in a fixed direction. These movements affect coasts, ports, fishing and climate.
Key points
Waves: wind transfers energy to the water surface. In a wave, water particles move in circles; only the energy moves forward. Parts: crest, trough, wave height, wavelength.
Tsunami – very long, fast waves caused by undersea earthquakes, volcanoes or landslides, e.g. the Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004.
Tides (भरती-ओहोटी) are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun and the earth's rotation. The moon's tide-producing force is a little more than twice that of the sun because it is much closer.
Most coasts get two high tides and two low tides in about 24 hours 50 minutes, so high tide comes about 50 minutes later each day.
Spring tides (very high high tides) occur on new moon and full moon days, when the sun, moon and earth are in a straight line.
Neap tides (low high tides) occur on the first and third quarter days, when the sun and moon pull at right angles.
The highest tidal range in the world is in the Bay of Fundy, Canada (about 15–16 m). In India, the Gulfs of Khambhat and Kachchh have high tidal ranges and tidal-power potential.
Ocean currents are caused by planetary winds, differences in temperature and density (salinity), the Coriolis force and the shape of coastlines.
Warm currents flow from the equator towards the poles; cold currents flow from the poles towards the equator.
In the northern Indian Ocean, currents reverse with the monsoon – clockwise in summer and anticlockwise in winter.
Where warm and cold currents meet, plankton grows and great fishing grounds develop: Grand Banks near Newfoundland (Gulf Stream + Labrador), seas near Japan (Kuroshio + Oyashio).
Important terms
Crest / trough – the highest / lowest point of a wave.
Tidal range – the difference between high-tide and low-tide levels.
Spring tide / neap tide – the highest / lowest tidal range in a lunar month.
Gyre – a large circular system of currents in an ocean basin.
Drift – a slow, wide surface current, e.g. North Atlantic Drift.

5 important questions
Q1. What are spring tides?
Very high tides that occur on new-moon and full-moon days, when the sun, the moon and the earth are in a straight line and their pulls add up.
Q2. Why does high tide occur about 50 minutes later each day?
Because the moon moves forward in its orbit while the earth rotates, so a place takes about 24 hours 50 minutes to come back under the moon.
Q3. Explain the causes and types of tides.
Gravitational pull of moon and sun; centrifugal force; two bulges.
