Quick summary
Distributional maps show how a variable – such as population, rainfall, temperature or crops – is spread over a region. This chapter explains three methods of making such maps from statistical data: the dot method, the choropleth method and the isopleth method.
Key points
Maps show the location of places and the distribution of variables. Maps on a special theme are called thematic maps.
A distributional map is drawn from statistical data of a region. It brings out the pattern of distribution clearly and is used for planning.
Dot method: each dot stands for a fixed value (e.g. 1 dot = 1000 people). Dots are placed where the variable actually exists. It is best for variables that are freely scattered, like population, cattle or crops. Circles or squares of different sizes may be used for urban population. A dense cluster of dots shows high concentration; few dots show sparse distribution.
Choropleth method: data is shown by shades or tints of a colour, or black-and-white patterns, for each administrative unit (taluka, district). Usually 5–7 classes are made; the darker the shade, the higher the value. Each unit gets only one value, e.g. population density.
Isopleth method: lines are drawn joining places of equal value. It is used when the variable changes continuously and gradually – altitude, temperature, rainfall, air pressure. Administrative boundaries are not considered. Contour lines and isobars are examples.
In isopleth maps, the interval between lines is fixed; lines close together show a rapid change.
Steps to draw maps: collect data, decide classes or dot value, choose shades/lines, draw on an outline map, give a title, legend (index), scale and direction.
Field visits are an important method of studying geography – they help collect first-hand data and observe the real situation.
Important terms
Distributional map (वितरण नकाशा) – map showing spread of a variable.
Thematic map – map made on a particular theme.
Choropleth (छायाक्रम पद्धत) – map showing values by shades.
Isopleth (समघनी रेषा) – line joining places of equal value.
Legend / index – key explaining symbols on a map.

5 important questions
Q1. Which method is used to show the distribution of population of a district?
The dot method, because population is freely scattered. Each dot represents a fixed number of people and dots are placed where people live.
Q2. Distinguish between the choropleth and isopleth methods.
In a choropleth map, values are shown by shades for each administrative unit and each unit has one value. In an isopleth map, lines join places of equal value and administrative units are not considered; it suits continuous data like rainfall.
Q3. Give reason: The isopleth method is suitable for showing rainfall.
Rainfall changes gradually and continuously from place to place. Isopleth lines joining places with equal rainfall show this smooth change well.
Q4. Why are field visits important in geography?
They help students observe landforms, land use and people's life directly, collect first-hand data and understand the relation between man and environment.
Q5. What should a distributional map include?
A title, legend (index), scale, direction (north), the classes or value of each dot, and the source of data.
Exam tip
Map reading questions are common – practise identifying the method used and reading its legend.

Quick summary
Endogenetic movements are the movements that take place inside the earth due to internal energy. This chapter explains slow movements that build continents and mountains (folding and faulting) and sudden movements like earthquakes and volcanoes, with their effects.
Key points
Energy released by radioactive materials in the mantle causes movements in the earth's crust. These are endogenetic (internal) movements.
The crust is made of plates. Seven major plates: Indo-Australian, African, Eurasian, North American, South American, Pacific and Antarctic.
Slow movements act over long periods: vertical movements build continents and plateaus (continent-building); horizontal movements build mountains (mountain-building).
Compression (movements towards each other) forms folds → fold mountains: the Himalayas, Aravalis, Rockies, Andes, Alps.
Tension (movements away from each other) forms faults. Land rising between two faults gives a block mountain (flat top, steep slopes) – Black Forest mountains of Europe; Meghalaya Plateau formed similarly. Land sinking between two faults gives a rift valley – Narmada valley, the Great Rift Valley of Africa, Rhine valley.
Sudden movements: earthquakes and volcanoes.
Earthquake: sudden release of energy below the surface makes the ground shake. The place inside the earth where it starts is the focus; the point on the surface directly above it is the epicentre, where the shock is felt first.
Seismic waves:P (primary) waves – fastest, travel through solids, liquids and gases, move buildings back and forth; S (secondary) waves – come next, move up and down, more destructive; L (surface) waves – travel along the crust, most destructive.
Magnitude is measured on the Richter scale using a seismograph, which draws a seismogram.
Volcano: magma comes out of the crust as lava, gases and ash. Central (conical) type – Mt Fujiyama (Japan), Mt Kilimanjaro (Tanzania). Fissure type – lava flows out of many cracks and forms plateaus, e.g. the Deccan Plateau.
Volcanoes are active (Fujiyama, Stromboli), dormant (Vesuvius, Barren Island in India) or extinct (Kilimanjaro).
Effects: loss of life and property, tsunamis, changes in groundwater, uplift or subsidence, landslides and avalanches; but also fertile soil, new land and minerals.
Important terms
Endogenetic (भूअंतर्गत) – originating inside the earth.
Fold (वली) – bend in rock layers due to compression.
Fault (विभंग) – crack in rocks due to tension.
Focus / epicentre (भूकंपनाभी / भूकंपकेंद्र) – origin of an earthquake / point above it on the surface.
Magma / lava – molten rock inside / outside the earth.

5 important questions
Q1. Distinguish between fold mountains and block mountains.
Fold mountains form when rock layers are compressed and folded; they have peaks and are very high (Himalayas). Block mountains form when land between two faults is pushed up due to tension; they have flat tops and steep slopes (Black Forest).
Q2. How is a rift valley formed?
When two faults develop side by side due to tension, the land between them sinks. This deep, narrow valley with steep sides is a rift valley, like the Narmada valley.
Q3. Which seismic waves are the most destructive? Why?
Surface (L) waves, because they travel along the crust near the surface and cause the maximum shaking and damage.
Q4. How was the Deccan Plateau formed?
By fissure-type volcanic eruptions. Lava flowed out from many cracks, spread over a large area, cooled in layers and formed the plateau.
Q5. Give the classification of volcanoes based on activity with examples.
Active – erupts often (Fujiyama, Stromboli); dormant – quiet for long but may erupt (Vesuvius, Barren Island); extinct – not likely to erupt again (Kilimanjaro).
Exam tip

Quick summary
Exogenetic processes are processes that act on the earth's surface due to external forces like the sun's heat, water, wind and living things. This first part explains weathering – mechanical, chemical and biological – and mass wasting, the downslope movement of weathered material.
Key points
Landforms made by internal movements are later shaped by exogenetic (external) processes: weathering, mass wasting, erosion, transportation and deposition.
Weathering is the natural breaking or weakening of rocks in their own place (in situ). It depends on climate, type of rock, slope and vegetation.
Mechanical (physical) weathering – rocks break into pieces without any change in composition. Causes:
Temperature: rocks heat up by day and cool at night; minerals expand and contract unequally, so outer layers peel off – exfoliation (dome-shaped hills) – or rocks break into blocks (block disintegration) or shatter.
Frost: water in cracks freezes, expands and breaks the rock (cold regions).
Crystal growth: salt crystals grow in cracks of rocks on coasts and deserts and widen them.
Release of pressure and the action of water also break rocks.
Chemical weathering – the composition of minerals changes. Common in areas of heavy rainfall:
Carbonation: rainwater absorbs CO₂ and forms carbonic acid (H₂O + CO₂ → H₂CO₃), which dissolves limestone.
Solution: soluble minerals like salt dissolve in water.
Oxidation: iron in rocks reacts with oxygen and water and rusts – rocks turn reddish and weak.
Biological weathering – by plants (roots widen cracks), animals (burrowing rats, rabbits, ants, termites) and humans (mining, quarrying, construction).
In limestone areas, chemical weathering produces caves with stalactites and stalagmites, e.g. at Wadgaon Darya, Ahmednagar district.
Mass wasting (mass movement): weathered material moves downslope under gravity.
Slow mass movements: soil creep on gentle slopes in dry areas – trees, poles and fences tilt.
Rapid mass movements: rockfalls, landslides, land subsidence and slumping (material sinking in place). They cause heavy damage, especially in hilly areas during heavy rain.
Weathering forms soil and supplies material for erosion; it is the first step in shaping landforms.
Important terms
Exogenetic processes (बाह्यप्रक्रिया) – processes caused by external forces.
Weathering (विदारण) – breaking of rocks in place.
Exfoliation – peeling off of rock layers like onion skin.
Mass wasting (विस्तृत झीज) – downslope movement of weathered material due to gravity.

5 important questions
Q1. Distinguish between weathering and mass wasting.
Weathering is breaking of rocks in their own place by temperature, water or living things. Mass wasting is the movement of the weathered material down a slope due to gravity.
Q2. Why does mechanical weathering occur more in deserts?
Deserts have a large difference between day and night temperatures. Rocks expand during the day and contract at night repeatedly, which weakens them and makes them break.
Q3. Explain carbonation.
Rainwater absorbs carbon dioxide from air and forms weak carbonic acid. This acid reacts with limestone (calcium carbonate) and dissolves it, forming caves and other features.
Q4. How do humans cause biological weathering?
By mining, quarrying, blasting, constructing roads and buildings, and cutting hills, humans break rocks on a large scale.
Q5. Why are landslides common in the Western Ghats during the monsoon?
Steep slopes, heavy rainfall which soaks the weathered soil and makes it heavy, and deforestation and road cutting together make the material slide down rapidly.
Exam tip
For "give reason" questions, link the type of weathering to the climate of the region.

Quick summary
This second part explains erosion, transportation and deposition by five agents – rivers, glaciers, wind, sea waves and groundwater – and the landforms each one creates. It also shows how human activities affect these processes.
Key points
Erosion is the wearing away of the land by moving agents; the eroded material is transported and later deposited when the agent loses energy.
Rivers (running water): strongest agent in humid regions.
Erosion in the upper course on steep slopes forms V-shaped valleys, gorges (canyons), waterfalls and potholes.
In the middle course the slope is gentle, the river bends – meanders; ox-bow lakes may form.
Deposition in the lower course forms flood plains, levees, alluvial fans and deltas.
Glaciers (moving masses of ice in high mountains and polar regions):
Deposited material is moraine – lateral, medial, ground and terminal moraines.
Wind: active in deserts and semi-arid areas.
Erosion by sand-laden wind forms mushroom rocks, deflation hollows and yardangs.
Deposition forms sand dunes, barchans (crescent-shaped dunes), seifs, ripple marks and loess plains.
Sea waves: erosion on rocky coasts forms sea cliffs, sea caves, sea arches, sea stacks and wave-cut platforms (seen on the Konkan coast). Deposition on gentle coasts forms beaches, sand bars, spits and lagoons.
Groundwater: effective in limestone (soluble) areas – sinkholes, limestone caves, stalactites (hanging from the roof) and stalagmites (rising from the floor), and pillars when they join.
The work of every agent depends on its speed, the amount of load, the slope and the type of rock.
Human activities like mining, sand dredging, dams and building on river banks change these natural processes and may cause floods, landslides and coastal erosion.
Important terms
Erosion (खनन) – wearing away of the land by agents.
Deposition (संचयन) – laying down of material carried by agents.
Meander (नागमोडी वळण) – a loop-like bend of a river.
Moraine (हिमोढ) – rock material deposited by a glacier.
Delta (त्रिभुज प्रदेश) – triangular deposit at a river mouth.

5 important questions
Q1. How is a delta formed?
When a river reaches the sea its speed falls and it cannot carry its load. Sediments are deposited at the mouth and the river divides into branches, forming a triangular landform called a delta.
Q2. Why are V-shaped valleys formed in the upper course of a river?
The slope is steep, the river flows fast and erodes its bed vertically (down-cutting), so a deep narrow valley shaped like the letter V is formed.
Q3. How is a mushroom rock formed?
Wind carrying sand erodes the lower part of a rock more than the upper part, because sand particles move near the ground. The base becomes narrow and the top stays wide, like a mushroom.
Q4. Name the landforms formed by the erosional work of sea waves.
Q5. Distinguish between stalactites and stalagmites.
Stalactites are formed from the roof of a limestone cave and hang downwards. Stalagmites are formed on the floor and grow upwards. When they join they form a pillar.

Quick summary
Precipitation is water falling from the atmosphere to the earth's surface in any form. This chapter explains how condensation happens, the forms of precipitation (rain, snow, hail, fog, dew, frost), the three types of rainfall, how rainfall is measured, and the effects of precipitation, including acid rain.
Key points
Water evaporates and rises as water vapour. When air cools, the vapour condenses into tiny droplets around dust particles, forming clouds. When droplets become heavy, they fall as precipitation.
Forms of precipitation and condensation:
Rain – water droplets fall when they grow heavy.
Snow – when the temperature is below freezing point, vapour turns directly into ice crystals that fall as snow (e.g. Kashmir in winter).
Hail – strong rising currents carry droplets high where they freeze; layers of ice build up and fall as hailstones, damaging crops.
Fog – when the density of tiny droplets floating near the ground increases (London winters).
Dew – vapour condenses on cold surfaces like grass at night.
Frost – dew freezes when the temperature falls below 0 °C; harmful to crops.
Types of rainfall:
Convectional rainfall – in equatorial regions, strong heating makes air rise, cool and condense; it rains in the afternoon with thunder and lightning almost every day (Congo and Amazon basins). Limited area but certain.
Orographic (relief) rainfall – moist winds are blocked by mountains, rise along the slope, cool and give heavy rain on the windward side. The leeward side gets little rain – the rain-shadow area (e.g. east of the Sahyadris in Maharashtra). India's monsoon rainfall is mostly orographic.
Cyclonic rainfall – in a low-pressure area, winds rise in a whirling motion and cause rain. In temperate regions it is widespread; in tropical regions it is stormy and limited.
Orographic and cyclonic rainfall are less certain than convectional rainfall.
Rainfall is measured by a rain gauge (funnel, jar and measuring cylinder in millimetres), kept in the open about 30 cm above ground. In heavy rain areas it is read every three hours. Snow is melted and measured; 120 mm of ice ≈ 10 mm of rainfall.
Effects: adequate rain helps farming and water supply; excess rain causes floods; lack of rain causes drought, shortage of food and harms the economy of an agricultural country.
Acid rain: in industrial areas, gases like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides mix with water vapour and form acids; this rain damages buildings, soil, plants and water bodies.
Important terms
Precipitation (वृष्टी) – water falling from the atmosphere in any form.
Condensation (सांद्रीभवन) – change of water vapour into water droplets.
Rain-shadow area (पर्जन्यछायेचा प्रदेश) – region on the leeward side of mountains that gets less rain.
Rain gauge (पर्जन्यमापक) – instrument to measure rainfall.

5 important questions
Q1. Why does convectional rainfall occur in the afternoon in equatorial regions?
The sun's rays are vertical and heat the land strongly by afternoon. Hot moist air rises, cools quickly, condenses and gives rain with thunder and lightning in the afternoon.
Q2. Explain orographic rainfall with an example.
Moist monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea are blocked by the Sahyadri mountains. They rise, cool and give heavy rain on the western (windward) side, while the eastern (leeward) side becomes a rain-shadow area.
Q3. How are hailstones formed?
When the ground is very hot, strong upward air currents carry water droplets high into the cold atmosphere where they freeze. Layers of ice keep forming until they become heavy and fall as hailstones.
Q4. What are the effects of acid rain?
It corrodes buildings and monuments, makes soil and water acidic, harms crops, forests and aquatic life.
Q5. How is rainfall measured?
With a rain gauge – a funnel over a jar kept in an open place. The collected water is poured into a measuring cylinder marked in millimetres, usually every 24 hours (every 3 hours in heavy rain).
Exam tip
Draw the orographic rainfall diagram with windward side, leeward side and rain-shadow area labelled.

Quick summary
Sea water has three important properties – temperature, salinity and density. This chapter explains how they vary from place to place and with depth, the factors that affect them, and their effects on ocean currents, climate and marine life.
Key points
Temperature: the surface temperature of sea water is not the same everywhere. It is highest near the equator and decreases towards the poles. Ocean currents, winds, cyclones, rainfall, salinity and seasons also affect it; cold currents lower and warm currents raise the temperature.
Temperature decreases with depth up to about 2000 m. Below that it is nearly uniform at about 4 °C everywhere, so deep water does not freeze.
The fall of temperature with depth is rapid in equatorial areas and smaller in polar areas. Land-locked seas are warmer than open seas.
Salinity is the amount of salt dissolved in sea water, shown in parts per thousand (‰). The average salinity of the oceans is 35‰.
Factors affecting salinity: rate of evaporation (higher evaporation → more salinity), supply of fresh water from rivers, rain and melting snow (more fresh water → less salinity), and whether the sea is open or land-locked.
Average salinity by zone: equatorial 34‰ (high rainfall, big rivers like Congo and Amazon); tropical 37‰ – the highest in open seas, as low rainfall and hot deserts give high evaporation; temperate 33‰; polar 31‰ (melting snow).
Land-locked seas: Mediterranean 39‰, Red Sea 41‰, Baltic Sea only 7‰ (many rivers, low evaporation), Caspian 155‰, Great Salt Lake 220‰, Dead Sea 332‰ (on the Israel–Jordan border; very low rainfall, only the Jordan river, high evaporation; almost no life).
The Arabian Sea is more saline (35‰) than the Bay of Bengal, which receives water from large rivers.
Salt is obtained from sea water in salt pans. Salinity increases the buoyancy of water, which helps water transport.
Density depends on temperature and salinity: colder and saltier water is denser. Density increases with depth.
After about 1000 m depth, there is very little change in temperature, salinity and density.
Differences in these properties produce ocean currents, which act as temperature controllers and affect the climate of the earth.
Important terms
Salinity (क्षारता) – amount of salts in 1000 grams of sea water, in ‰.
Density (घनता) – mass per unit volume of water.
Land-locked sea – a sea almost surrounded by land.
Buoyancy – upward push of water on floating objects.

5 important questions
Q1. What are the factors affecting the salinity of sea water?
Rate of evaporation, supply of fresh water from rivers, rainfall and melting snow, and the location of the sea (open or land-locked).
Q2. Give reason: Salinity is low in the Baltic Sea.
The Baltic Sea is in a cold region with low evaporation, and many rivers bring fresh water into it, so its salinity is only about 7‰.
Q3. Give reason: Salinity is higher in tropical zones than at the equator.
Near the equator it rains daily and big rivers add fresh water. In the tropics (around 25°–35°), rainfall is low, deserts surround the seas and evaporation is high, so salinity is higher.
Q4. Why is there almost no life in the Dead Sea?
Its salinity is very high (332‰) due to low rainfall, very little fresh water and high evaporation. Even fish from the Jordan river die as soon as they enter it.
Q5. How does temperature of sea water change with depth?
It falls rapidly with depth up to about 2000 m. Below that it is nearly constant at about 4 °C everywhere.

Quick summary
Because the earth rotates, places on different longitudes have different local times. When people travel all the way around the world, they can lose or gain a day. To avoid this confusion, the International Date Line (IDL) was drawn along the 180° meridian. This chapter explains why the line is needed, how the day and date change when you cross it, why it is not straight, and why it is important.
Key points
The earth takes 24 hours to rotate through 360°. So 1° = 4 minutes and 15° = 1 hour.
The earth rotates from west to east. That is why places to the east see the sun first, and their time is ahead of places to the west.
From the Prime Meridian (0°, Greenwich), whether we go east or west, we reach the 180° meridian after a difference of 12 hours. So the day and date are adjusted along this meridian.
Example from the textbook idea: a traveller who goes round the earth towards the east finds he has counted one day more; a traveller who goes towards the west counts one day less. Both reach home on the same real day, so the date line is needed to set the calendar right.
The International Date Line was fixed in 1884 at Washington, at a meeting of representatives of many nations led by the American professor Davidson.
Rule for crossing:
Going from west to east (e.g. from Japan towards America): repeat the same day and date (Thursday 25 December stays Thursday 25 December).
Going from east to west (e.g. from America towards Japan): move one day ahead (Thursday 25 December becomes Friday 26 December).
A new day begins on the west side of the date line (near Japan, Australia, New Zealand) and ends on the east side (near America, Chile). So the day on earth begins in the Pacific Ocean.
The line is not straight. In some places it bends east of 180° and in others west of it, so that it does not pass over any land or island group. Otherwise, people in one region or country would have two different days and dates at the same time. The line passes fully through the Pacific Ocean. Its last change was made in 2011.
Importance: it keeps international flights, shipping, communication, trade and business dealings in order, and keeps world transport timetables correct.
Important terms
International Date Line (आंतरराष्ट्रीय वाररेषा) – an imaginary line drawn along the 180° meridian where the day and date change.
Prime Meridian (मूळ रेखावृत्त) – the 0° meridian passing through Greenwich.
Rotation (परिवलन) – the spinning of the earth on its own axis.
Local time (स्थानिक वेळ) – time of a place decided by the position of the sun at that longitude.

5 important questions
Q1. If it is 10 a.m. on Wednesday at 15° E, what is the time on the International Date Line?
Difference = 180 − 15 = 165°. 165 ÷ 15 = 11 hours. Time is ahead towards the east, so 10 a.m. + 11 hours = 9 p.m. The answer is Wednesday, 9 p.m.
Q2. What changes will you make while crossing the International Date Line?
While going from west to east (Japan to America), keep the same day and date again. While going from east to west (America to Japan), move the day and date one day ahead.
Q3. Give a geographical reason: The day on earth begins in the Pacific Ocean.
A new day starts just west of the International Date Line, and this line runs completely through the Pacific Ocean. So the new day first begins over the Pacific islands near New Zealand.
Q4. Why is the International Date Line not straight like the 180° meridian?
If it were straight, it would cross some islands and land areas. Then one region would have two days and dates at the same moment, which would confuse people. So it is bent to pass only through the ocean.
Q5. Write the importance of the International Date Line.
It keeps the calculation of day and date correct for international air and sea travel, communication, trade and banking, and helps keep world transport timetables accurate.
Exam tip
Remember 15° = 1 hour for time sums, and "east is ahead". The question "while crossing in which direction do we add a day?" is asked often – crossing east to west, we add a day.

Quick summary
Just as a family manages its money, a village, state, country and even the whole world manage their economic affairs. This chapter introduces what economics means, the three types of economies, the features and functions of an economy, and the idea of globalisation.
Key points
Managing a person or a family is mainly about income and expenditure. This everyday idea of managing money gave rise to economics.
The word "economics" comes from the Greek word OIKONOMIA, which means "household management".
Economics teaches how to use time, money, labour, land and other resources wisely.
Lionel Robbins: economics studies how people try to satisfy unlimited wants with limited and scarce resources that have alternative uses.
Adam Smith is called the father of economics. In 1776 he wrote the book "Wealth of Nations" and said economics is the science of wealth.
An economy is the set of activities in a particular region related to the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.
Capitalist economy: the means of production are owned and managed by private individuals; the aim is maximum profit. Examples: USA, Japan, Germany.
Socialist economy: the factors of production are owned by the whole society, that is the government; the aim is social welfare. Examples: China, Russia.
Mixed economy: the public sector and private sector work side by side; it balances profit with social welfare. Examples: India, Sweden, United Kingdom.
Features of an economy: geographical area, population, natural resources, occupations and political sovereignty.
Functions of an economy: deciding what goods to produce and how much; keeping production costs low; deciding for whom to produce; sharing national income fairly (social and economic justice); providing for future needs.
Globalisation means joining a country's economy with the world economy. In a borderless economy, natural resources, profit, services, capital, labour and technology move freely across national borders; trade is free and limits on investment are removed.
Important terms
Economics (अर्थशास्त्र) – the study of balancing unlimited wants with limited resources.
Economy (अर्थव्यवस्था) – the system of production, distribution and consumption in a region.
Mixed economy (मिश्र अर्थव्यवस्था) – an economy where public and private sectors exist together.

5 important questions
Q1. From which Greek word does the term "economics" come?
From OIKONOMIA, which means "household management".
Q2. In a capitalist economy, who owns and manages the means of production?
Private individuals own and manage them, and their main aim is to earn maximum profit.
Q3. Explain: The economy begins at home.
Every family has many needs but limited income. It has to decide which expenses come first and how much to save. The same planning of income and spending happens on a bigger scale in a village, a state and a country.
Q4. Explain: India has a mixed economy.
In India, railways, defence and many industries are in the public sector, while many industries and services are run by the private sector. India tries to balance earning profit with the welfare of the people.
Q5. What is globalisation? Write its features.
Globalisation is joining a country's economy with the world economy. Capital, labour, services, technology and profit move freely across borders, trade is free, and restrictions on investment are removed.

Quick summary
Trade means buying and selling of goods and services. This chapter covers the idea of trade, the barter system, visible and invisible trade, types of trade, imports and exports, balance of trade, international economic organisations and why marketing matters.
Key points
Exchange or buying and selling of goods between buyers and sellers is called trade. No region or country is self-sufficient. Areas with surplus production supply areas with shortage (e.g. apples from Jammu and Kashmir sent to other states).
In ancient and medieval times there was the barter system – goods were exchanged for goods, without money. Deciding the value of goods was difficult, so money came into use. Even today, barter is seen on a small scale in some remote and tribal areas.
Visible trade – buying and selling of goods that can be seen (vegetables, books). Invisible trade – exchange of services (travel, advice of a doctor or lawyer, cinema, haircut).
By quantity of goods:wholesale trade (buying in bulk directly from producers and selling to retailers) and retail trade (selling small quantities directly to consumers).
By area: local, regional, national and international trade. Internal (domestic) trade depends on the size of the country, resources, population, transport and communication, standard of living and the marketing system. India has large internal trade because of its geographical variety and large population.
International trade: between two countries – bilateral; among more than two countries – multilateral. E.g. mineral oil from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait; wheat from Canada and the USA. It is affected by the economy, government policy, laws, currency, language and diplomatic relations.
Bringing in goods that are in short supply from outside is import; selling surplus goods outside is export.
Balance of trade – the difference between the value of imports and exports in a given period. Imports more than exports – unfavourable; exports more than imports – favourable; both equal – balanced trade.
Marketing: the price of goods depends on quality, grading, packing and presentation. Good marketing takes products to the maximum number of customers and increases trade.
International economic organisations such as WTO, EU, OPEC, SAARC, ASEAN, APEC and BRICS help member countries in trade (see the table).
Important terms
Barter system (वस्तुविनिमय) – exchange of goods for goods without money.
Invisible trade (अदृश्य व्यापार) – trade in services.
Balance of trade (व्यापार संतुलन) – difference between the value of imports and exports.
Marketing (विपणन) – the system of taking goods to customers in an attractive way.

5 important questions
Q1. Distinguish between visible and invisible trade.
In visible trade, goods that can be seen and touched are bought and sold (vegetables, books). In invisible trade, services are exchanged (travel, medical advice, cinema) and no goods are handed over.
Q2. Distinguish between wholesale and retail trade.
A wholesaler buys goods in large quantities from producers and sells them to retailers. A retailer buys from the wholesaler and sells small quantities directly to consumers.
Q3. Explain the types of balance of trade.
When imports are more than exports, it is an unfavourable balance of trade. When exports are more than imports, it is favourable. When both are nearly equal, it is balanced trade.
Q4. Write the functions of the World Trade Organization.
It gives a platform for international trade talks, handles trade disputes between countries, keeps watch on the trade policies of nations, and gives technical help and training to developing countries.
Q5. Give a geographical reason: Marketing is necessary for growth of trade.
Good quality, proper grading and attractive packing increase demand and fetch a better price. Through marketing, goods reach a large number of customers at the same time, so trade grows.

Urbanisation is the process in which the urban population increases, either because people move from villages to towns or because a village itself grows into a town. This chapter explains the causes of urbanisation, the criteria for an urban settlement in India, and the benefits and problems of urbanisation.
Key points
When a factory starts near a village, people from other places come for work. Transport, restaurants, shops, hospitals and schools increase. The gram panchayat is replaced by a municipal council, and the village becomes a town.
Census of India criteria (1961) for an urban settlement: (1) at least 75% of working men are in non-agricultural work, (2) population is more than 5000, (3) population density is at least 400 per sq km.
India's urban population rose from 17.79% in 1961 to 37.07% in 2011. Urbanisation is increasing steadily.
Causes of urbanisation:
Industrialisation – people come in hope of jobs. E.g. Mumbai grew fast in the 19th century because of textile mills; old fishing villages became part of the metropolis.
Trade – places good for moving and storing goods develop banks, warehouses and cold storages. E.g. Nagpur, located at the centre of the country.
Mechanisation and technology – machines in farming free labourers, who move to cities.
Transport and communication – Sawarde (Ratnagiri) grew because of the Konkan Railway; Bhusawal (Jalgaon) grew where railway lines meet.
Migration – short-term, long-term or permanent; the attraction of a better standard of living. E.g. migration to Pune and Mumbai.
Benefits: growth of secondary, tertiary and quaternary activities and more economic activity; social harmony as people from different regions live together; modernisation – sharing of knowledge, skills and technology; facilities like transport, education (e.g. Pune), medical care and fire services.
Problems:slums (unauthorised, crowded, lacking basic facilities), traffic congestion, pollution (air, noise, water), crime, sharp rise in land prices and social stress.
Smart City scheme – planned development of cities using information and communication technology, with efficient transport and connectivity.
Important terms
Urbanisation (नागरीकरण) – the process of increase in urban population.
Migration (स्थलांतर) – change of a person's place of living.
Slum (झोपडपट्टी) – crowded settlement of temporary, often unauthorised houses built on open land.
Suburb (उपनगर) – residential area on the outer side of a city.

5 important questions
Q1. What are the criteria for an urban settlement according to the Census of India?
At least 75% of working men should be in non-agricultural occupations, the population should be more than 5000, and the density should be at least 400 persons per sq km.
Q2. Give a geographical reason: Industrialisation increases urbanisation.
Industries create jobs, so people from nearby areas come there for work. Houses, shops, transport, schools and hospitals grow for them, and the settlement turns into a town or city (e.g. Mumbai).
Q3. Write the benefits of urbanisation.
Occupations grow and economic activity increases; people from different regions live together, bringing social harmony; knowledge and technology spread; education, medical and transport facilities improve; the standard of living rises.
Q4. Explain the problems of urbanisation.
Shortage of housing leads to slums; more private vehicles cause traffic jams; air, water and noise pollution increase; unemployment leads to crime; land prices rise; social stress grows.
Q5. Suggest measures to solve the problems of urbanisation.
Affordable housing, good public transport, proper waste and sewage management, strict pollution rules, creating jobs in rural areas to reduce migration, and planned development like the Smart City scheme.
Exam tip
Practise drawing a line graph of urban population percentages, and write causes of urbanisation with Maharashtra examples (Mumbai, Nagpur, Bhusawal, Sawarde).
(Roll-on Roll-off).

Quick summary
Transport and communication are basic facilities (infrastructure) needed for a country's development. This chapter covers the routes and means of transport and how to choose them, how relief (landforms) affects transport, the importance of transport, and modern communication along with its dangers such as cyber crime.
Key points
Routes of transport: roads, railways, waterways, airways and pipelines.
While choosing a route and means of transport, think about distance, cost, time, duration, relief, climate and market. This saves time and money, makes travel comfortable and prevents damage to goods.
The price a customer pays depends on production cost + transport cost. Cheap transport keeps prices low.
Development of transport is taken as a measure of a country's development. It increases movement of goods and people, helps industries and markets grow, and raises per capita income and GDP.
Effect of relief: the western part of Satara district is rugged because of the Sahyadri ranges, so the transport network there is sparse. The central part has a national highway and railway, so the network is dense. Routes develop easily on plains but are limited in hilly areas.
Green Corridor – making a route completely free of traffic so that donated organs reach the hospital quickly.
Ro-Ro (Roll-on Roll-off) service – loaded trucks are carried on railway wagons. It saves fuel, cost and reduces pollution. In India it started first on the Konkan Railway.
Importance of transport: expansion of trade, fast industrialisation, employment, linking regions, place utility, overcoming scarcity, reducing regional imbalance and growth of tourism.
Communication is also infrastructure. Traditional means – post, newspapers; modern means – mobile phones, television, internet, e-mail, video conferencing.
Artificial satellites help in mobile messages, television and weather information. Remote sensing images help in studying resources and in regional planning.
Apps are used for online payment and money transfer (e.g. BHIM app).
Dangers: hacking, fraud, data theft, cyber attacks and cyber war. Never share personal or sensitive information with anyone without checking.
Important terms
Infrastructure (पायाभूत सुविधा) – basic facilities needed for development (transport, communication, electricity).
Ro-Ro service (रो-रो वाहतूक) – carrying trucks on goods trains.
Remote sensing (सुदूरसंवेदन) – collecting information about the earth's surface from a distance using satellites.
Cyber crime (सायबर गुन्हा) – crime done through the internet.
Key facts
Route
Best used for
Roads
short distances, door-to-door service
Railways
long distances, heavy goods, cheap
Waterways
heavy international cargo, cheapest
Airways
fast; perishable or costly goods; emergencies
Pipelines
mineral oil, gas, water
5 important questions
Q1. Distinguish between railways and roadways.
Railways carry heavy goods and many passengers over long distances at low cost, but only between fixed stations. Roads are good for short distances and hilly areas and give door-to-door service, but cost more over long distances.
Q2. Distinguish between transport and communication.
Transport means actual movement of people and goods. Communication means exchange of information and messages through post, phone, internet and so on.
Q3. Give a geographical reason: The transport network is sparse in the western part of Satara district.
The western part is covered by the Sahyadri and its branches, and the land is uneven; the Koyna dam reservoir is also there. Building roads and railways in such rugged land is difficult and costly.
Q4. Write the advantages of Ro-Ro service.
Trucks travel long distances on trains, saving fuel, time and labour; transport cost reduces; traffic and pollution on roads decrease.
Q5. What care should be taken while using the internet?
Do not post personal or sensitive information on social media; do not share details with anyone without checking; do not open suspicious e-mails or links; stay alert against hacking and fraud.
Exam tip
Practise reading a relief map and a transport map together to explain their relationship – remember the Satara district example.

Quick summary
Tourism is travel away from one's home for pleasure, entertainment, business, stay and similar purposes. This chapter covers types of tourism, planning a trip, new kinds of tourism, the economic and environmental importance of tourism and tourism development in Maharashtra.
Key points
Places become famous for natural beauty, pleasant climate, hot water springs, beaches, historical monuments, sculpture, religious places and wildlife sanctuaries.
Tourist places can be grouped as: coastal, historical, sanctuaries and national parks, hill stations and religious places.
By political boundary:domestic tourism – within the country (e.g. tourists from Nagpur visiting Ellora–Ajanta); international tourism – crossing the country's borders (e.g. Indians visiting Switzerland).
International tourism needs a passport, a visa (entry and exit permit), travel insurance and the currency of that country.
Types by purpose: pilgrimage, jungle trips, sea tourism, health tourism, adventure sports and watching underwater life.
GPS and map apps tell us the route, distance, time and facilities on the way.
Tourism is an important tertiary activity. Foreign tourists bring foreign exchange; tourism creates jobs and develops places.
Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) provides rest houses, water sports and stay facilities. The Deccan Odyssey is a special train (Mumbai, Nashik, Ellora, Ajanta, Kolhapur, Goa, Ratnagiri), called a "palace on wheels". The Palace on Wheels runs Delhi–Jaipur–Udaipur–Bharatpur–Agra–Delhi.
New types of tourism:eco-friendly tourism (no littering, no noise pollution, no harm to wildlife); agro-tourism – a view of farm life (Pune, Kolhapur districts); film tourism (Mumbai Film City, Ramoji Film City).
Tarkarli (Malvan taluka) in Konkan is known for snorkelling and scuba diving to see the sea bed and marine life.
Tourism and economic development: restaurants, shops and transport benefit directly; infrastructure and employment grow indirectly. Since services are sold, tourism is an invisible trade.
Local people become aware of protecting nature and culture, so tourism also helps environmental development.
Important terms
Tourism (पर्यटन) – travel away from home for pleasure, recreation and similar purposes.
Eco-friendly tourism (पर्यावरणस्नेही पर्यटन) – tourism that does not harm the environment.
Agro-tourism (कृषिपर्यटन) – tourism that gives the experience of farm life.
Passport (पारपत्र) – identity document needed for travel abroad.

5 important questions
Q1. Distinguish between domestic and international tourism.
Tourism within the borders of one's own country is domestic tourism (e.g. Nagpur to Ellora). Tourism to another country across borders is international tourism; it needs a passport, visa and foreign currency.
Q2. Give a geographical reason: Tourism is an invisible trade.
In tourism, services like stay, transport, guiding and entertainment are sold, not goods. Trade in services cannot be seen, so tourism is called invisible trade.
Q3. What is eco-friendly tourism?
Due to growing population, pollution and urbanisation, the environment is being damaged, so this idea came up. It means touring with care – not littering, avoiding noise and not harming trees, animals and birds.
Q4. How does tourism lead to economic development?
Restaurants, shops, transport and entertainment centres earn directly; infrastructure grows; local people get jobs; foreign tourists add foreign exchange.
Q5. Suggest measures for the development of tourism.
Ensure safe travel for tourists, develop facilities, look after heritage and tourist places, advertise them, give government support, develop forts, and develop the hidden potential of new places.
Exam tip
"Correct the wrong statement" questions are common (e.g. "foreign tourists should be banned" – wrong). Learn the points on benefits of tourism.
