What is History?

Quick summary
History is the science that tries to understand events of the past. This chapter explains past, present and future, why history needs a scientific method, and how history helps us plan for the future.
Key points
Time that has gone by is the past. Time we are in now is the present. Time yet to come is the future.
Words like 'yesterday', 'last year' show the past; 'today', 'now' show the present; 'tomorrow', 'next year' show the future.
The time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was about 400 years ago.
The science that tries to understand past events is called history.
In other sciences, facts can be tested by experiments. Past events cannot be repeated by experiment.
So historians collect evidence (sources) from the past and check it carefully.
If different people describe the same event differently, each description is examined to find the correct facts.
History tells us how people lived, what they made and how society changed.
Knowing the past helps us understand the present and plan a better future.
Important terms
History (इतिहास) – the science that studies past events.
Past – time that has already gone by.
Evidence – things or records that prove what happened in the past.
Historian – a person who studies history.
Important dates and people
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj established Swaraj about 400 years ago.
5 important questions
Q1. What is history?
The science that tries to understand events that happened in the past.
Q2. Give two words each for past, present and future.
Past: yesterday, last year. Present: today, now. Future: tomorrow, next year.
Q3. Why can't history be studied through experiments?
Past events cannot be created again, so historians depend on evidence instead of experiments.
Q4. How do historians decide which account of an event is correct?
They examine the details of each account carefully and check them against other evidence.
Q5. How is history useful to us?
It helps us understand how society changed, understand the present and plan for the future.
Exam tip
Draw a simple line: Past → Present → Future, with an example from your own life.

Quick summary
Time is continuous, but we divide it into units like day, year and century. This chapter explains the Common Era (CE) and Before Common Era (BCE), other eras, the two main periods of history and scientific methods of finding the age of old objects.
Key points
One rotation of the earth makes one day (24 hours).
Units of time: second, minute, hour, day, week, fortnight, month, year, century (100 years), millennium (1000 years). The second is the smallest.
Arranging years one after another in serial order is a unilinear division of time.
The Common Era (CE), also called Christian Era (AD = Anno Domini), began in memory of Jesus Christ.
Years before it are BCE (Before Common Era) or BC. They are counted in reverse order: 100 BCE comes before 1 BCE.
Example: Vardhaman Mahavir lived 599 BC – 527 BC; Gautama Buddha lived 563 BC – 483 BC.
New eras were started to mark great events. Shivaji Maharaj started the 'Rajyabhishek Shaka' in 1674 CE to mark his coronation. Shalivahan Shaka and Vikram Samvat are also used.
History is divided into two main periods: prehistoric period and historic period.
Prehistory means 'before history', when there was no written record.
Age of old remains is found by dating techniques like Carbon-14 analysis and tree-ring analysis (dendrochronology).
Important terms
Century (शतक) – 100 years.
Millennium (सहस्रक) – 1000 years.
CE / BCE – Common Era / Before Common Era.
Timeline – a line showing events in order of time.
Dating techniques – scientific methods to find the age of old objects.

Quick summary
Evolution means gradual and continuous change. Over a very long time, new species of animals developed from older ones. This chapter explains evolution, the stages of animal evolution, dinosaurs and apes.
Key points
To survive changes in the environment, some animals of a species undergo changes. Over time these become inherited, and a new species may form.
Species that adapt to changes survive; those that cannot become extinct.
Charles Darwin was the first scientist to give a systematic explanation of evolution.
'Dinosaur' means 'terrible lizard'. Huge dinosaurs became extinct suddenly, probably due to a natural disaster or environmental change.
Some two-legged, winged dinosaurs are believed to have evolved into birds.
Life began with unicellular protozoa, then multicellular organisms.
Invertebrates have no backbone (worm, snail, mosquito).
Vertebrates have a backbone: fish (aquatic), amphibians (frog), reptiles (snake), birds and mammals (cow).
Mammals are the most evolved vertebrates. Most grow inside the mother's womb and drink mother's milk. Platypus and some anteaters lay eggs but still feed milk.
Apes that came down to the grasslands slowly evolved into humans. This happened first in Africa. The first human species is called 'primitive man'.
Important terms
Evolution (उत्क्रांती) – gradual and continuous change over a long time.
Species – a group of similar living things.
Extinct – no longer existing.
Vertebrate / Invertebrate – animal with / without a backbone.
Amphibian – animal living in water and on land.
Important dates and people
Charles Darwin – gave the first systematic explanation of evolution.
5 important questions
Q1. What is evolution?
Gradual and continuous change by which new species develop from old ones over a long time.
Q2. Who first explained evolution systematically?
Charles Darwin.
Q3. Why did huge dinosaurs become extinct?
Probably because of a sudden natural disaster or environmental change they could not adapt to.

Quick summary
Humans evolved slowly through several species. This chapter describes Homo habilis, Homo erectus, the Neanderthal Man and Homo sapiens, and how each was better at using tools, fire and language.
Key points
Homo habilis means 'the one who uses his hands skilfully'. Its fossils were found on the Tanzania–Kenya border in Africa. Louis Leakey discovered and named it.
Homo habilis walked on two feet, made simple stone tools and was a forager (ate leftovers of animals killed by others).
Homo erectus lived in groups and used fire from wildfires, but could not make fire. He made better tools like the hand-axe. His remains are found in Africa, Asia and Europe.
The Neanderthal Man (Homo neanderthalensis) was named after Neanderthal in Germany. He was big and strong, lived in caves and hunted big animals.
Neanderthals made fire by rubbing hard sticks or striking flintstones. They wore leather and buried their dead with tools and red ochre.
Neanderthals became extinct about 30,000 years ago (found by C-14 dating).
Homo sapiens means 'intelligent man'. In Europe he is called Cro-Magnon Man.
Homo sapiens had a developed voice box and language. He fixed stone blades in wooden or bone handles and drew pictures.
We, modern humans, are Homo sapiens sapiens. Genetic research shows we inherited some traits from Neanderthals.
Important terms
Fossil – remains of a living thing preserved in rock.
Forager – one who collects food instead of producing it.
Heredity (आनुवंशिकता) – passing of traits from ancestors.
Genetics – science of heredity.

Quick summary
Early humans made tools from stone, bone and wood to do their work. Since mostly stone tools have survived, this long period is called the Stone Age. This chapter explains how tools are chosen and how stone tools improved over three stages of the Stone Age.
Key points
We choose a tool according to the task.
Four factors decide the choice of a tool: available resources, least time and energy, maximum efficiency, and skill gained by practice.
Apes like chimpanzees also use stones and sticks as simple tools.
Wooden tools rot easily, bone tools are rarely found, so mainly stone tools remain today.
The Stone Age has three periods: Old Stone Age (Palaeolithic), Middle Stone Age (Mesolithic) and New Stone Age (Neolithic). 'Lithos' means stone.
In the Old Stone Age, tools were made by the percussion technique: striking one stone against another.
Homo habilis made crude choppers, sharp on one side only.
Homo erectus made symmetrical tools like the hand-axe and cleaver; he planned the shape in his mind first.
Homo sapiens made long, narrow stone blades and from them knives, scrapers, borers and chisels. He also made beads and cave paintings.
In India, Old Stone Age tools are found from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu. A human skull was found near Hathnora on the Narmada (Madhya Pradesh). Bhimbetka has Old Stone Age cave paintings.
Important terms
Stone Age (अश्मयुग) – period when mainly stone tools were used.
Palaeolithic / Mesolithic / Neolithic – Old / Middle / New Stone Age.
Percussion technique – striking stones to shape them.
Chopper – a crude tool sharp on one side.
Hand-axe – a symmetrical stone tool made by Homo erectus.
Important dates and people
Hathnora (Narmada valley, MP) – Old Stone Age human skull found.

From Shelters to Village-settlements

Quick summary
Early humans lived in caves and tents, then in seasonal camps, and finally in permanent villages. This chapter shows how changes in climate, food and the start of farming led humans to settle in one place.
Key points
Neanderthals lived mainly in caves in very cold Europe. They wore leather, used fire and even put up tents of animal hide inside caves.
In the Middle Stone Age the climate became warmer and the environment changed.
Big animals like mammoths were dying out because of climate change and too much hunting. The mammoth was an ancestor of the elephant but much bigger.
So Homo sapiens turned to fishing and hunting smaller animals like wild boar, deer, mountain goat and sheep.
They set up seasonal camps. They harvested wild grains and gathered fruits and roots in each season.
They learnt the best seasons for fishing and the best hunting grounds, so they stayed longer in one place.
In the New Stone Age humans became producers of food grains. Agriculture is the main feature of this age.
Farming allowed food to be stored, and farm work needed people to stay in one place.
So people built permanent village-settlements and lived there generation after generation.
Important terms
Shelter – a place that protects from weather.
Seasonal camp – a temporary camp set up for a season.
Village-settlement – a permanent group of houses where people live.
Mammoth – a huge extinct ancestor of the elephant.

Quick summary
With farming and taming of animals, humans began a settled life. Extra food gave people time to learn special skills. This chapter explains domestication, the beginning of agriculture, new occupations, barter and community life in villages.
Key points
Three steps of domestication: capture wild animals, tame them, and get useful things (milk, work) from them.
Keeping domesticated animals for our use is animal husbandry.
The dog was the first animal to be domesticated (Middle Stone Age), used to help in hunting. Goat and sheep came next.
Agriculture first began about 11,000 years ago in Israel and Iraq. Women are credited with starting cultivation.
Seeds were sown with pointed sticks weighted with a perforated stone.
After the bullock-drawn plough came into use, farm production increased greatly.
Extra food meant some people got spare time to experiment and develop special skills, like pottery and weaving. New occupations began.
Goods were exchanged through the barter system.
People worshipped nature for good crops. Rules and customs were made for sharing work, water and security. A social system based on agriculture began.
People lived in villages with families and kinship ties.

After village life, humans began to use metals, the potter's wheel and the wheel for carts. Trade grew and big villages became cities. Writing (script) developed. This chapter explains how urban civilization arose.
Key points
Christian Thomsen classified ancient objects by the 'Three Age System': Stone Age, Copper Age, Iron Age.
This made people think copper was the first metal. Actually gold was used first, but gold is soft and not useful for tools.
Copper was the first metal used for tools. That period is the Copper Age.
The wheel was the most important invention of the Copper Age. It was first used by potters, later in carts and chariots.
The potter's wheel turns on a pointed stone pivot. It helped make symmetrical, decorated pots in large numbers.
Craftsmen lived close together in one area of the village to manage work easily.
Villages near raw materials and trade routes grew fast. Trade and transport expanded.
These growing settlements became cities. The need to keep records led to the development of script (writing).
Cities had organized social groups like rulers, priests, traders, craftsmen and farmers.
Important terms
Three Age System – Stone Age, Copper Age, Iron Age.

The Historic Period began when written records became available. This chapter explains the meaning of culture and the four early river-valley civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt, China and Harappa.
Key points
In the historic period, written records like inscriptions, manuscripts and books are available. With well-developed scripts, the New Stone Age ended and the Historic Period began.
Humans change materials from nature: they cook food, make tools, pots, bricks and cloth.
Knowledge of arts, skills and traditions passed from generation to generation, and the way of life based on it, is called culture.
New Stone Age villages grew on river banks because farming needs fertile soil and water.
More production, the wheel, trade and scripts led to early civilizations around 3000 BCE in four regions.
Mesopotamia means 'land between two rivers' – the Tigris and the Euphrates.
The Egyptian civilization grew on the banks of the Nile.
The Chinese civilization grew in the valley of the Huang He river.
The Harappan civilization grew in the Indus valley in the Indian subcontinent. Its cities had roads crossing at right angles, planned blocks of houses and huge granaries.
People of these civilizations also enjoyed games, music and other entertainment.
