Advanced Web Designing

Quick summary

This chapter takes HTML further with HTML5 and CSS. You learn the new HTML5 form controls and validation, how to style and position elements with CSS, lists, adding audio and video, image maps, inline frames, and finally how to host a website so it is live on the Internet.

Key points

  • HTML5 is the current version of HTML. It supports mobile devices, and all major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Opera) support it.
  • HTML5 adds new input types: color, number, url, image, date, email, month, week, time, range, search, tel and datetime-local.
  • New input attributes help validation: required, placeholder, min, max, pattern (regular expression), readonly, autofocus, autocomplete, multiple.
  • The <meta> tag in the <head> stores page information (author, description, keywords). It is not shown on the page.
  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) controls the look of many pages from one place. A rule = selector + declaration block {property: value;}.
  • Three ways to add CSS: inline (style attribute), internal/embedded (<style> in head), external (separate .css file linked with <link>).
  • The position property can be static, fixed, relative or absolute; float moves an element left or right so text flows around it.
  • Lists: <ol> (numbered, type 1, A, a, I, i and start attribute), <ul> (bulleted), <dl> with <dt> and <dd> (definition list).
  • <audio> and <video> play media without plug-ins; attributes include controls, autoplay, loop, muted, src; <source> gives alternate files.
  • An image map uses <map> and <area> with shape (rect, circle, poly, default) and coords to make parts of an image clickable.
  • <iframe> shows another web page inside a page (src, height, width).
  • Web hosting makes a site available online. Types include shared hosting and free hosting; a domain name and web space are needed.

Important terms

  • HTML5 – latest version of HyperText Markup Language.
  • CSS – language that describes the style and layout of HTML elements.
  • Selector – the HTML element (or class/id) a CSS rule applies to.
  • Image map – an image with several clickable areas.
  • Iframe – inline frame that embeds another document.
  • Web hosting – service that stores a website on a server connected to the Internet.

Formulas

ItemSyntax
CSS ruleselector { property: value; }
External CSS<link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css">
Image map area<area shape="circle" coords="x,y,r" href="...">
Rectangle coordsx1,y1,x2,y2 (top-left and bottom-right)

5 important questions

Q1. List any four new input types in HTML5.

color (colour picker), date (date picker), email (e-mail address field), number, range (slider), url, tel, search.

Q2. What are the three types of CSS?

Inline CSS (style attribute inside a tag), internal or embedded CSS (<style> tag in head) and external CSS (separate .css file linked to the page). External CSS can style many pages at once.

Q3. Explain the position property of CSS.

static is the default (normal flow). relative moves the element from its normal place using top/left. absolute places it relative to the nearest positioned parent. fixed keeps it fixed in the browser window even when the page scrolls.

Q4. What is an image map? Name the tags used.

An image map makes different regions of one image link to different pages. <img usemap="#name">, <map name="name"> and <area> with shape and coords are used.

Q5. What is web hosting? Name two types.

Hosting stores website files on a server so anyone can open it on the Internet. Shared hosting (low cost, many sites on one server) and free hosting (limited space and period).

Exam tip

Practise writing small HTML5 code (a form with validation, an image map, CSS rules). Code-based questions carry marks in theory and in the SOP practical.

Introduction to SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Quick summary

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the set of techniques used to design a website so that it ranks high in search engine results (Google, Bing, Yahoo). Higher ranking brings more visitors. The chapter covers types and techniques of SEO, how to optimise a web page, and SEO audit tools.

Key points

  • SEO is a part of search engine marketing (SEM). Its aim is more visitors through organic (unpaid) results.
  • Two types: On-Page SEO (good content, keywords in the right places, proper titles) and Off-Page SEO (links from other sites, link building, directories).
  • White Hat SEO uses methods search engines approve: relevant content, labelled images, unique titles, correct HTML.
  • Black Hat SEO uses tricks search engines dislike: duplicate content, hidden text, keyword stuffing, cloaking/redirecting.
  • Page structure: start with <!doctype html>, close tags in proper order (innermost first), self-close single tags like <img />.
  • <title> should be up to about 60 characters; meta description about 70–160 characters.
  • Use heading tags h1–h6 properly and give every image an alt attribute.
  • Keywords are chosen by keyword research (tools like Google Keyword Planner).
  • Social bookmarking and Social Media Optimization (SMO) on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, forums help Off-Page SEO.
  • Backlinks from other sites act like a "vote of confidence".
  • Speed and mobile-friendliness also affect ranking. robots.txt tells search engines which pages not to index.
  • An SEO audit checks a site's health; free tools: SEOptimer, Seomator.

Important terms

  • Search engine – online program that finds information on the web.
  • Crawling – bots/spiders scanning pages and collecting titles, images, keywords and links.
  • Organic result – listing that appears because of relevance, not payment.
  • Backlink – a link on another website that leads to your site.
  • SERP – Search Engine Results Page.

Formulas

Example: alt text, headingsExample: backlinks, social bookmarking

5 important questions

Q1. What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a technique of designing and developing a website so that it ranks high in search results and gets more visitors.

Q2. Differentiate between White Hat and Black Hat SEO.

White Hat uses approved methods like relevant content and proper HTML. Black Hat uses manipulative tricks like keyword stuffing, invisible text and cloaking, which can get a site penalised.

Q3. How can a web page be optimised for SEO?

Proper page structure, meaningful <title>, meta description and keywords, heading tags, alt text on images, good keywords, fast loading and a mobile-friendly design.

Q4. What is the role of social media and backlinks in SEO?

Sharing on social sites and bookmarking creates links back to the site. Backlinks show search engines that other sites trust the content, so ranking improves.

Q5. What is an SEO audit?

An analysis of a website's health and ranking factors. Tools like SEOptimer report overall grade, usability, performance, social links, security (SSL, HTTPS) and give recommendations.

Exam tip

Learn the On-Page vs Off-Page and White Hat vs Black Hat differences in table form; they are asked often.

Advanced JavaScript

Quick summary

This chapter builds on the JavaScript basics of Class 11. It covers the features of JavaScript, client-side vs server-side scripting, the switch statement and loops, objects and the DOM, the window object, events, and the built-in objects String, Math, Array, Date and Number.

Key points

  • JavaScript is an object-based, event-driven, case-sensitive scripting language that runs in the browser.
  • It validates form input in the browser itself, so the user does not wait for the server.
  • Client-side script runs in the browser and its code is visible; server-side script (PHP, JSP, ASP) runs on the web server and its code is hidden.
  • switch(expression) compares one value with many case labels; break stops falling into the next case; default handles no match.
  • Loops: for (initialisation, condition, increment in one line), while (entry-controlled), do…while (runs at least once), for…in (goes through the properties of an object).
  • break exits a loop; continue skips to the next iteration.
  • An object has properties (data) and methods (actions). DOM (Document Object Model) represents the page as a tree of objects; document.getElementById() reaches an element.
  • window is the top object. Its methods include alert(), confirm(), prompt(), open(), close(), print(), setTimeout().
  • Events trigger functions: onclick, ondblclick, onmouseover, onmouseout, onkeydown, onkeyup, onload, onfocus, onblur, onchange, onselect, onsubmit, onreset.
  • String has length and methods like charAt(), indexOf(), toUpperCase(), toLowerCase(), substring(), concat().
  • Math has PI and methods like sqrt(), pow(), round(), random(), max(), min(). Array has length, push(), pop(), sort(), reverse(), join().
  • Number methods include toFixed(); isNaN() checks if a value is "not a number".

Important terms

  • Event – an action like a click or key press that the script can respond to.
  • Event handler – attribute such as onclick that calls a function when the event happens.
  • DOM – object tree of an HTML page that scripts can read and change.
  • Method – function belonging to an object.
  • Property – value belonging to an object, e.g. length.

Formulas

StructureSyntax
switchswitch(x){ case 1: …; break; default: … }
forfor(i=1; i<=10; i++){ … }
do…whiledo{ … } while(condition);
Access elementdocument.getElementById("id").value

5 important questions

Q1. Give two differences between client-side and server-side scripting.

Client-side runs in the browser and its code can be seen by the user; server-side runs on the web server and code is hidden. Client-side reduces server load; server-side can access databases.

Q2. Explain any four events in JavaScript.

onclick – user clicks an element; onload – page finishes loading; onchange – content of a field changes; onblur – element loses focus; onsubmit – form is submitted.

Q3. Write a JavaScript program to print numbers 1 to 10 using a for loop.

for(var i=1; i<=10; i++){ document.write(i + "<br>"); }

Q4. List any four methods of the window object.

alert() shows a message; confirm() shows OK/Cancel; prompt() takes input from the user; open() opens a new window; print() prints the page.

Q5. Explain any three methods of the String object.

charAt(n) gives the character at position n; toUpperCase() changes text to capitals; indexOf("x") returns the first position of x (−1 if not found).

Exam tip

Practise short programs (switch for day names, loops, form validation with onclick). Learn event names exactly; spelling matters in code.

Server-Side Scripting (PHP)

Quick summary

PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is an open-source server-side scripting language. The script runs on the web server and sends ready HTML to the browser. This chapter covers features of PHP, variables and data types, operators, string functions, arrays, user-defined functions, form handling with GET/POST and connecting to a database.

Key points

  • Server-side scripting runs on the web server to create dynamic pages; the user sees only the output, not the code.
  • Features of PHP: simple, faster than JSP/ASP, open source (free), platform independent (Linux, Windows, macOS), supports many databases, loosely typed.
  • PHP code is written between <?php and ?> and saved with the .php extension. echo prints output.
  • Every variable name starts with the dollar sign, for example $a. Variable names are case sensitive; keywords like if, echo, while are not.
  • No need to declare a type; PHP decides it from the value. Data types: String, Integer, Float, Boolean, Array, Object, NULL.
  • Scope: a variable declared outside a function is global; inside a function it is local; the global keyword uses a global variable inside a function.
  • Operators are similar to JavaScript; "." joins (concatenates) strings.
  • String functions: strlen(), str_word_count(), strrev(), strpos(), str_replace(), substr(), strtolower(), strtoupper(), ucwords(), trim().
  • Arrays: indexed (numeric index), associative (named keys, "name"=>"value") and multidimensional (array of arrays). count() gives the number of elements.
  • A user-defined function is created with the keyword function, for example a function add() that takes two numbers and returns their sum.
  • Form handling, GET method: $_GET collects data sent in the URL (visible, small data).
  • Form handling, POST method: $_POST collects data sent in the request body (hidden, safer for passwords).
  • To run PHP locally, install a server package such as XAMPP, save files in htdocs and open http://localhost/ in a browser. mysqli functions connect PHP to a MySQL database.

Important terms

  • Web server – software/computer that runs scripts and serves web pages.
  • Associative array – array that uses named keys instead of numbers.
  • $_POST – built-in array that holds form data sent by the POST method (GET data goes in the matching GET array).
  • Open source – software free to use and modify.

Formulas

TaskPHP code
Printecho "Hello World!";
Indexed array$c = array("Red","Green");
Associative array$age = array("Ram"=>17, "Sita"=>16);
Length of stringstrlen("PHP") gives 3
Read form field$_POST["name"]

5 important questions

Q1. What is server-side scripting? Give examples.

Scripts that run on the web server to build dynamic pages before sending them to the browser. Examples: PHP, ASP, JSP.

Q2. State any four features of PHP.

Open source and free, faster than many scripting languages, platform independent, supports databases like MySQL, simple and loosely typed.

Q3. Explain three types of arrays in PHP with examples.

Indexed: $a = array(10,20,30); and the first value is element 0.
Associative: $m = array("Maths"=>90); and a value is read by its key, "Maths".
Multidimensional: an array containing arrays, like rows of a table.

Q4. Explain any four string functions.

strlen() counts characters; strrev() reverses a string; strtoupper() changes to capitals; str_replace("a","b",$s) replaces text; strpos() finds the position of text.

Q5. Differentiate between GET and POST.

GET sends data in the URL, is visible and limited in size, can be bookmarked. POST sends data inside the request, is not shown in the URL, has no size limit and is safer for sensitive data.

Exam tip

Remember: every PHP variable begins with the dollar sign and every statement ends with a semicolon. Practise one form-handling program using POST.
