Quick summary
This chapter explains how Europe moved out of the medieval period. The Crusades opened Europe to new ideas from the East, the Renaissance ("rebirth") brought humanism and new thinking, science grew through observation and experiment, sea explorers found new routes, and the Industrial Revolution changed how goods were produced. These changes later affected India deeply.
Key points
Crusades: religious wars fought by European Christians to win back Jerusalem and Bethlehem, holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims. The first crusade began in 1096 CE.
Saladin, Sultan of Egypt, defeated the crusaders and recaptured Jerusalem in 1187 CE.
Through the crusades, Europeans met Arabs and learnt about new goods, warfare methods and knowledge.
Renaissance (पुनरुज्जीवन / प्रबोधन) began in Italy in the 14th century and peaked in the 15th–16th centuries. Interest in Greek and Roman learning returned.
Humanism put the human being and human life at the centre of thought, instead of only religion.
Printing press: Johannes Gutenberg started the first press in Germany in 1440. Books became cheap and ideas spread fast.
Science: Copernicus (1543) said the Sun, not the Earth, is the centre of our planetary system. Galileo built a better telescope (1609) and is called the "Father of Empirical Science".
Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans (1453) blocked the old land route to the East, so Europeans looked for sea routes.
Explorers: Columbus reached America (1492); Vasco da Gama reached Calicut (Kozhikode) in 1498; Magellan's expedition was the first to sail around the earth.
Industrial Revolution began in England in the 18th century: flying shuttle (John Kay, 1738), spinning frame (Arkwright, 1769), spinning mule (Crompton, 1779), cotton gin (1793).
Economic nationalism: each nation tried to protect its own trade and industry, which pushed European countries to seek colonies for raw material and markets.
Important terms
Crusade – a "holy war" by European Christians for control of Jerusalem.
Renaissance – rebirth of learning, art and rational thinking in Europe.
Humanism – thinking that gives importance to human beings and their life on earth.
Empirical method – forming theories on the basis of observation and experiment.
Industrial Revolution – change from hand production to machine production in factories.
Taxonomy – a method developed to classify living things (animals).

5 important questions
Q1. What were the Crusades? State any two consequences.
The Crusades were wars fought by European Christians against Muslim rulers to control the holy cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Consequences: Europeans came in contact with Arab knowledge and goods; trade between Europe and the East increased; European warfare techniques changed.
Q2. Explain the concept of Humanism.
Humanism gave importance to man, his abilities and his life in this world. Thinkers studied Greek and Roman texts, valued reason and questioned blind faith. It shaped Renaissance art, literature and education.
Q3. Why is Galileo called the "Father of Empirical Science"?
Galileo observed nature carefully, did experiments and built theories only on the basis of these observations. With his improved telescope (1609) he supported the Sun-centred theory. This method of observation-based study is the empirical method.
Q4. Why did Europeans search for new sea routes?
After the Ottomans captured Constantinople in 1453, the land route for spices and goods from Asia was controlled by them and trade became costly. So European kings sponsored sailors like Columbus and Vasco da Gama to find direct sea routes to India.
Q5. State the effects of the Industrial Revolution.
Production moved to factories and became fast and cheap; cities grew; a working class and a capitalist class appeared; demand for raw materials and markets grew, which led European nations to build colonies in Asia and Africa.

Quick summary
Colonialism means a powerful, developed nation occupying a distant, less developed land and ruling it for its own benefit. This chapter explains the causes and effects of colonialism and how European powers built colonies in America, Australia–New Zealand, Asia and Africa.
Key points
Colonialism (वसाहतवाद): a developed nation captures the land of a less developed distant nation and sets up its own rule there.
Causes: Industrial Revolution (need of raw material and markets), surplus capital, strong navies, economic nationalism, population growth, and the "civilising mission" idea.
America: Spain and Portugal took control of South America; Spain set up a "Council of the Indies" to rule colonies. Britain built Jamestown (1607) and colonies from New England to Carolina.
British taxes such as the Stamp Act (1765) angered the American colonists. In the Boston Tea Party (1773), people threw East India Company tea into the sea.
The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776. This struggle is called the American Revolution; George Washington led the colonists.
Canada came to Britain by the Treaty of Paris (1763).
Australia began as a colony of prisoners sent from England; in 1900 the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. New Zealand got self-rule (dominion status) in 1907.
Asia: Britain fought three Anglo-Burmese wars (third around 1885); Myanmar was separated from India in 1935 and became free in 1948. Nepal was defeated in 1816; Sikkim became a British protectorate (1890) and joined India after the 1975 plebiscite. India–Bhutan treaty: 8 August 1949.
Africa: the "Scramble for Africa" — the Berlin Conference (1884) of European nations divided Africa. Germany, France, Britain, Belgium, Italy and Portugal took colonies.
Important terms
Colony – a region ruled by a foreign power.
Protectorate – a state that keeps internal rule but is controlled by a foreign power in defence and foreign matters.
Plebiscite – a direct vote of people on an important question.
Imperialism – the policy of expanding a nation's power by capturing other lands.

5 important questions
Q1. Explain the meaning of colonialism.
When a developed nation occupies the territory of a less developed and distant nation and rules it for its own economic and political gain, it is called colonialism. The colony supplies raw material and becomes a market for the ruling country's goods.
Q2. State the causes of the rise of colonialism.
(1) Industrial Revolution created need for raw materials and markets. (2) European nations had surplus capital to invest. (3) Strong navies and new weapons. (4) Economic nationalism and competition between nations. (5) Desire to spread religion and "civilise" others.
Q3. What was the Boston Tea Party?
In 1773, people of Boston protested against British taxes by dumping boxes of tea belonging to the East India Company into the sea. It became an important step towards the American War of Independence.
Q4. How did Sikkim become part of India?
Sikkim became a British protectorate under the 1890 British–China treaty. After India's independence it had special ties with India. In 1975 a plebiscite was held and the people of Sikkim voted to merge with India.
Q5. What was the "Scramble for Africa"?
In the late 19th century European powers competed to grab African land. At the Berlin Conference (1884) they agreed on how to divide Africa, and by 1914 almost the whole continent was under European rule.
Exam tip
For "explain with reasons" questions, give two clear reasons in separate lines. Remember the American Revolution dates in order: 1765 → 1773 → 1774 → 1776.

Quick summary
This chapter explains how four European trading powers — the Portuguese, the British, the Dutch and the French — came to India, set up trading posts (factories) and fought for control. In the end the British East India Company became the strongest.
Key points
Portuguese: Vasco da Gama reached Calicut (Kozhikode) in 1498. The Portuguese built forts on the west coast and made Indian ships take a licence called cartaz to sail on the Indian Ocean.
By 1608 they held places like Diu, Daman, Chaul, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi and Kollam. Goa was their main centre.
British: The East India Company was formed on 31 December 1600. It set up factories (trade centres) at Surat, Chennai (Madras) and later Kolkata.
In 1661 Charles II of England married Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese princess, and got Mumbai (Bombay) as dowry. Mumbai was given to the Company and came fully under British control in 1665.
Sir George Oxenden was made Governor of Surat and Commander-in-Chief of Mumbai (1669). A British mint was set up in Mumbai.
Dutch: The United East India Company (VOC) of Holland was formed in 1602. Their first factory in India was at Petapuli on the Coromandel coast; an early colony was at Machilipatnam.
French: The French East India Company was formed in 1664 by the efforts of Colbert, minister of King Louis XIV. Their first factory was at Surat (1668); Pondicherry became their main centre.
The British and French fought three Carnatic Wars (1744–1763). The French lost, and the British became the main European power in India.
Important terms
Factory – in this period, a trading post/warehouse of a European company, not a manufacturing unit.
Cartaz – sea-pass issued by the Portuguese; ships without it could be attacked.
Mint – place where coins are made.
Carnatic Wars – Anglo-French wars in south India, 1744–1763.

5 important questions
Q1. What was the "cartaz" system?
The Portuguese controlled the Indian Ocean with their navy. Any Indian ship sailing on the ocean had to buy a licence called cartaz from them. Ships without it could be seized.
Q2. How did Mumbai come into British hands?
In 1661 Charles II of England married the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza and received the islands of Mumbai as dowry. The king gave them to the East India Company, and by 1665 Mumbai was fully British.
Q3. Write a note on the Dutch in India.
Dutch companies joined to form the United East India Company in 1602. They set up factories from Africa to Japan. In India their first factory was at Petapuli; they also traded at Machilipatnam and other places. They were more interested in the spice islands of Southeast Asia.
Q4. Why did the French fail in India?
The British had a stronger navy and more money from trade. The French company depended on its government. The British won the Carnatic Wars (1744–1763), which ended French hopes of an empire in India.
Q5. Name the places where the Portuguese had colonies in India.
Diu, Daman, Chaul, Goa (with Sashti and Bardesh), Honnavar, Mangalore, Kannur, Kochi and Kollam on the west coast.

Quick summary
This chapter describes how the Maratha state dealt with the Portuguese, Dutch, French, British, the Siddis of Janjira and the Afghans. From Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to the Peshwas, the Marathas fought, signed treaties and traded with these powers, until the British ended Maratha rule in 1818.
Key points
Portuguese: Shivaji Maharaj first met them after taking Kalyan–Bhiwandi. They often helped his enemies (Adilshah, Siddis). A Maratha–Portuguese treaty was signed on 10 February 1670.
In 1737–39, Chimaji Appa (brother of Bajirao I) led the campaign against the Portuguese; the Marathas took Sashti (1737) and then Vasai (1739).
Dutch: had a factory at Vengurla (1649). Their trade with the Marathas was mostly commercial.
French: set up a factory at Rajapur (1668) with Shivaji Maharaj's permission. Ibrahim Khan Gardi, trained by the French, led Maratha artillery at Panipat (1761). Mahadji Shinde built a modern army with French officers like de Boigne and Perron.
British: a Maratha–British agreement was signed on 12 June 1674. Rivalry grew over Khanderi island, where Shivaji Maharaj began a fort in 1679; the British had to retreat in 1680.
Three Anglo-Maratha Wars: First (Treaty of Wadgaon, a Maratha win; ended by Treaty of Salbai 1782), Second (1803, after the Treaty of Vasai, 1802, signed by Peshwa Bajirao II), Third (1817–18). Maratha rule ended in 1818.
Siddis of Janjira were a naval power. Shivaji Maharaj could not capture Janjira; the struggle continued under the Peshwas.
Afghans: Ahmad Shah Abdali invaded India several times from 1748. The Third Battle of Panipat (14 January 1761) was fought between the Marathas and Abdali; the Marathas lost heavily, but Abdali did not stay.
The Marathas won the Battle of Kharda (1795) against the Nizam.
Important terms
Firangi – word first used for the Portuguese, later for all Europeans.
Treaty of Vasai (1802) – Peshwa Bajirao II accepted British subsidiary alliance; this led to the Second Anglo-Maratha War.
Chauthai – a share (one-fourth) of revenue collected by the Marathas.

5 important questions
Q1. Why was the Treaty of Vasai important?
In 1802 Peshwa Bajirao II signed the Treaty of Vasai with the British and accepted their protection. Other Maratha chiefs saw it as a loss of independence, and the Second Anglo-Maratha War followed in 1803. It weakened the Maratha confederacy.
Q2. Write a note on Chimaji Appa's campaign against the Portuguese.
The Portuguese troubled people in the Konkan and built outposts at Vasai, Tarapur and other places. Chimaji Appa, brother of Peshwa Bajirao I, led the Maratha army, captured Sashti island in 1737 and won the strong fort of Vasai in 1739.
Q3. Why did the Marathas fight the Third Battle of Panipat?
Ahmad Shah Abdali repeatedly invaded north India. Under the 1752 agreement the Marathas had promised to protect the Mughal throne. To stop Abdali they fought him at Panipat on 14 January 1761.
Q4. How did the French influence the Maratha army?
French-trained Ibrahim Khan Gardi led the Maratha artillery in 1761. Later Mahadji Shinde built a trained army and artillery with French officers de Boigne and Perron.
Q5. Why could Shivaji Maharaj not win Janjira?
Janjira was a sea fort of the Siddis, who had a strong navy and got help from the Mughals and Europeans. The Marathas blocked it (1671) and built forts nearby, but could not capture it.

Quick summary
In the 19th century, Indians educated in the new system felt that political freedom was not enough without changing society from within. This chapter covers reformers, religious reform movements (Brahmo Samaj, Prarthana Samaj, Satyashodhak Samaj, Arya Samaj, Ramakrishna Mission) and progressive princely rulers.
Key points
Society suffered from superstition, caste discrimination, child marriage, sati and lack of education. Reformers wanted freedom, equality, fraternity and humanism.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy (Bengal) showed that no religious text made sati compulsory. Lord William Bentinck banned sati in 1829. He founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828 (one God, no idol worship).
Prarthana Samaj grew out of the Paramhansa Sabha (Dadoba Pandurang Tarkhadkar). Members like Dr Atmaram Pandurang, Justice M. G. Ranade and Dr R. G. Bhandarkar opposed idol worship and worked for women and workers.
Satyashodhak Samaj (1873, Pune) – Mahatma Jotirao Phule. It rejected priestly dominance and worked for farmers, workers and lower castes. Jotirao and Savitribai Phule started a school for girls.
Arya Samaj (1875) – Swami Dayanand Saraswati; respected the Vedas, opposed caste discrimination, supported widow remarriage.
Ramakrishna Mission (1897) – Swami Vivekananda; focus on service to the needy.
Sir Syed Ahmad Khan founded the Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College (1875) at Aligarh for modern education of Muslims.
Tarabai Shinde (born 1850, Buldhana) challenged male domination (patriarchy).
Maharshi V. R. Shinde set up the Depressed Classes Mission. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar led the Kalaram Temple Satyagraha at Nashik (1930) and embraced Buddhism in 1956. Periyar (E. V. Ramaswamy Naicker) took part in the Vaikom Satyagraha.
Princely rulers: Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad of Baroda gave compulsory primary education, libraries, and property rights to women. Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur declared reservations, made primary education free and compulsory, and made a law for inter-caste marriage.

Questions often ask "who founded / who said". Revise the founder–organisation–year table till you know it by heart.

5 important questions
Q1. State the causes of the 1857 struggle.
Annexation of states (political), heavy land revenue and ruin of crafts (economic), interference in customs (social–religious), and discrimination against Indian soldiers. The greased cartridges of the Enfield rifle were the immediate cause.
Q2. What were the effects of the 1857 war?
The East India Company's rule ended and the British Crown took direct control (Queen's Proclamation). The British reorganised the army and followed "divide and rule". It also inspired later generations of freedom fighters.
Q3. Distinguish between Moderates and Extremists.
Moderates believed in British justice and used petitions and speeches (Gokhale, Naoroji). Extremists demanded Swaraj and used boycott, swadeshi and mass action (Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal). They split at Surat in 1907.
Q4. Write a note on Abhinav Bharat.
In 1899 Ganesh and Vinayak Savarkar started the secret group Mitra Mela at Nashik. It became Abhinav Bharat in 1904 and trained young men for armed struggle. V. D. Savarkar also wrote "1857 The First War of Independence".
Q5. Explain the Quit India Movement.
On 8 August 1942 the Congress asked the British to quit India and Gandhiji gave the call "Do or Die". Leaders were arrested at once, but people continued with strikes and underground activity, and parallel governments were set up at places like Satara.

Quick summary
The first half of the 20th century saw two World Wars. This chapter explains the main events of the First World War (1914–1918) and the Second World War (1939–1945), India's role in them, and how the wars affected India's economy, army and freedom movement.
Key points
First World War (1914–1918): Central Powers (Germany, Austria, Turkey, Bulgaria) fought the Allies (England, France, Russia, later others). Germany attacked Belgium at the start.
The naval Battle of Jutland (1916) between Germany and England: the German navy was defeated.
The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles; the League of Nations was formed to keep peace.
Second World War (1939–1945): Hitler took Sudetenland (1938), then attacked Poland in 1939. British troops were attacked at Dunkirk (1940). Hitler later broke his non-aggression pact and attacked Soviet Russia; a huge German army was trapped and defeated at Stalingrad.
Japan attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor in 1941; the US entered the war. After atom bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945.
Fascism – an ideology against democracy, liberalism, individual freedom and equality (Mussolini's Italy; Nazism in Hitler's Germany).
India in WW I: Indian soldiers fought in Europe, Africa and West Asia; India sent huge money and war material. The Montagu–Chelmsford Report (1918) proposed reforms; a Sandhurst-like academy was suggested; TISCO supplied steel (Lord Chelmsford visited it in 1919).
India in WW II: British India was dragged into the war in September 1939 without asking Indians. New factories were set up for war supplies; prices rose and the Bengal famine (1943) caused great suffering.
Dr Dwarkanath Kotnis of Solapur went with an Indian medical team to China (1938) and died there in 1942 serving wounded soldiers.
Impact on India: industry grew, Indian soldiers gained experience, nationalism and demand for freedom became stronger.
Important terms
Allied Powers – England, France, Russia (WW I); later USA, USSR, Britain, France (WW II).
Axis Powers – Germany, Italy, Japan in WW II.
League of Nations – international body formed after WW I to prevent war.

Quick summary
After the Second World War, colonial powers became weak and nationalist movements grew stronger. This chapter explains how countries in Asia and Africa became free from colonial rule — the process called decolonisation.
Key points
Decolonisation = end of colonial rule. The Atlantic Charter (1941) gave the process momentum by supporting people's right to choose their government.
Maldives: Portuguese came in 1507; their rule was ended in 1573. Maldives became independent on 26 July 1965.
Sri Lanka (Ceylon): ruled by the British from 1798; independent in 1948.
Myanmar: Aung San led the Burma Independence Army; independent on 4 January 1948.
Bandung Conference (1955, Indonesia): first conference of Asian and African nations; it supported freedom of colonies. India had called an Asian Relations Conference in 1947.
Africa: after WW I, the League of Nations let England, France and Belgium share Germany's colonies (1919). Pan-African Congress meetings (Paris 1919; Manchester 1945) built African unity.
South Africa was formed (1910–20) from four British colonies; it suffered apartheid until Nelson Mandela's time.
After WW II, Italy and Germany lost their African colonies. Ghana, Kenya, Algeria (1962) and many others became free in the 1950s–60s. Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined to form Tanzania (1964).
India strongly supported freedom of Asian and African countries.
Important terms
Decolonisation – process by which colonies become independent.
Atlantic Charter – 1941 statement by Britain and USA supporting self-government.
Pan-Africanism – idea of unity among all people of African origin.
Apartheid – racial segregation policy in South Africa.

5 important questions
Q1. What is decolonisation?
The process by which colonies became free from the rule of European powers and formed independent nations is called decolonisation. It speeded up after the Second World War.
Q2. Why did decolonisation speed up after the Second World War?
Colonial powers like Britain and France were weakened by the war; nationalist movements were strong; the Atlantic Charter and the UN supported self-rule; and India's independence (1947) inspired others.
Q3. Write a note on the Bandung Conference.
In 1955 Asian and African countries met at Bandung in Indonesia. It was the first such conference; it opposed colonialism and racism and laid the base for the Non-Aligned Movement.
Q4. How did Myanmar gain independence?
The British fought three wars to conquer Myanmar and ruled it as part of India till 1935. Aung San's Burma Independence Army fought for freedom, and Myanmar became independent on 4 January 1948.
Q5. What was the Pan-African Congress?
A series of meetings of African leaders and thinkers (Paris 1919, Manchester 1945) to build unity among Africans and demand an end to colonial rule.

Quick summary
After 1945 the USA and Soviet Russia became superpowers and competed without fighting a direct war. This tension is called the Cold War. The chapter covers its meaning, military alliances, the Non-Aligned Movement, India's anti-colonial policy, SAARC and the Commonwealth.
Key points
Cold War – a state of tension, rivalry and suspicion between the USA (capitalist bloc) and the USSR (communist bloc), without direct war. The term was first used by Walter Lippmann.
Germany was divided; the Berlin Wall was built in 1961 and pulled down in 1989–90, and Germany reunited.
Alliances: NATO (1949, USA and West Europe); ANZUS (1951: Australia, New Zealand, USA); SEATO or Manila Pact (1954, dissolved 1977); CENTO (1955); Warsaw Pact (1955, USSR and seven communist countries).
Cuban Missile Crisis (1962): Soviet missiles in Cuba brought the world close to nuclear war.
Easing of tension (détente): Nixon–Brezhnev meeting (1972), Helsinki Conference (1975), Camp David talks (1978).
Gorbachev (from 1985) brought Perestroika (restructuring) and Glasnost (openness). In 1991 the USSR broke into 15 countries — the end of the Cold War.
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM): countries that did not join either bloc. Leaders: Nehru (India), Nasser (Egypt), Tito (Yugoslavia), Sukarno (Indonesia). First summit at Belgrade, 1961.
India's anti-colonial policy: India supported freedom struggles in Asia and Africa and opposed apartheid.
SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, 1985) – for cooperation among South Asian countries.
Commonwealth – a group of countries that were once British colonies; India stayed in it as a republic.

5 important questions
Q1. What is meant by Cold War?
After WW II, the USA and USSR competed for power through alliances, arms race and propaganda, but without fighting each other directly. This state of tension is called the Cold War.
Q2. Explain the Non-Aligned Movement.
Newly free nations decided not to join either the US or Soviet bloc. They followed peaceful coexistence and an independent foreign policy. Nehru, Nasser and Tito led it; the first summit was at Belgrade in 1961.
Q3. What was the Cuban Missile Crisis?
In 1962 Soviet Russia placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, close to the USA. The USA blockaded Cuba and the world came close to nuclear war, until the USSR removed the missiles.
Q4. How did the Cold War end?
Gorbachev's reforms of perestroika and glasnost, the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) and the break-up of the USSR in 1991 ended the Cold War.
Q5. Write a note on the Warsaw Pact.
To counter NATO, Soviet Russia signed the Warsaw Pact in 1955 with Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania. Albania left it in 1968.

5 important questions
Q1. What is globalisation? What were its effects on India?
Globalisation means linking a country's economy with the world through free trade, investment and technology. In India it brought foreign companies, more jobs in services, growth of IT, and Indian firms buying companies abroad; but it also increased competition for small industries.
Q2. Write a note on the World Trade Organisation.
WTO was formed on 1 January 1995 to promote free trade among nations. It took over the work of GATT (1947) and settles trade disputes between member countries.
Q3. Explain the importance of the Right to Information Act.
The RTI Act 2005 lets any citizen ask for information from public offices within a fixed time. It increases transparency, reduces corruption and makes officials accountable.
Q4. What was the Kargil War?
In 1999 Pakistan sent intruders into the Kargil–Drass area of Ladakh. The Indian army pushed them back in "Operation Vijay". The war led to faster modernisation of India's forces.
Q5. State the achievements of India in space research.
India launched satellites for other countries at low cost, sent Chandrayaan-1 (2008) which found evidence of water on the Moon, and later launched Chandrayaan-2 and Mangalyaan.
Exam tip
This chapter has many schemes and years — revise them as a list grouped by area (rural, urban, science, defence).
